April has been one of the best months yet! We celebrated our 1 year anniversary by giving away an iPod Shuffle, we got featured on a couple of sites that gave us more exposure and behind the scenes we worked on a couple of features that will be releasing in June. Thanks for being an awesome reader!
Here are the top downloaded tracks on April 2010 (Not necessarily a “Best Of” list, but everything posted here is pretty damn awesome!)

It’s easy to think of A Weather’s music as mellow. However, the truly amazing thing about their latest album is that if you really listen, and crank it up a bit louder than seems necessary, Everyday Balloons takes on an almost anthem-like aesthetic. This album plays equally well softly trickling from your earbuds as it does streaming out of open car windows in the first hot days of spring. That kind of duality implies a certain depth to the music which lends itself to heavy rotation on the playlist. “Third of Life” starts Balloons off with, if not the best track on the record, then at least the most aggressive one—well, musically aggressive. Vocally it’s a charming, folksy duet about a couple generally coming to terms with life and love. This is one of the tracks you’re going to need to turn up. Somehow Adam Selzer’s production gives the track a crackling reverb that brings it to a close with a certain delicacy. Read full review at inyourspeakers.com

And just because their previous album was so amazing, here are some songs from Cove. If you have enjoyed their soft acoustic rock above, you will completely melt to these songs below.

![MarkyDJ-1-1 MarkyDJ 1 12 [Fresh Hip/Hop] Marky – RUN ON (Prod by Madman)](http://themusicninja.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/MarkyDJ-1-12.jpg)
Straight from DC, Marky just released “Run On”, a cut off his “Journey to Markyland, USA: Rest Stop 2″ presented by Kevin Nottingham and Johnny Cash. The song is a dark, Madman-produced track that samples Johnny Cash’s vocals and showcases how incredably fluent Marky has become at his own rhymes. Defnitely expect ‘a deep and cinematic record’ coming from him.

![free-energy-main free energy main2 [Pop/Rock] Free Energy Stuck On Nothing](http://themusicninja.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/free-energy-main2.jpg)
Free Energy steal from just about all your favorites through the past decades, even the ones you may not admit to enjoying. From classic rock titans like the Stooges, T-Rex, and Boston, all the way to 90’s alt-rock bands like Weezer and Pavement, Free Energy’s style of muscle-laden guitars, moderate tempos and punchy melodic hooks is one we’re all familiar with. It’s tried and true. It’s fun as hell, man. This album is about seizing life moment by moment through a refusal to sit still. It is about abandoning authority, and championing inhibitions of all else.
It’s wind in your hair, foam in your glass, and a summer’s worth of freedom. The band gets bonus points for sounding amazing, which is likely due primarily to the production work of James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem. Guitars are not only appropriately shredded track to track, dueling and solo alike, but they’re also mixed and processed in brilliant hi-fidelity stereo. Read full review at inyourspeakers.com

![Rusko---Hold-On-(Feat.-Amber-Coffman)-(Sub-Focus-Remix) Rusko Hold On Feat. Amber Coffman Sub Focus Remix2 [Filthy Dirty Electro] Rusko Hold On (Feat. Amber Coffman) (Sub Focus Remix) + MORE](http://themusicninja.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Rusko-Hold-On-Feat.-Amber-Coffman-Sub-Focus-Remix2.jpg)
Just like the guys at Gotta Dance Dirty put it, Rusko and Sub Focus are a match made in Hades. Amber Coffman’s sweet delicious vocals DOES NOT PREPARE YOU for the ear bleeding, heavy bass hitting of a beat that comes next. Thank the electro gods for not only giving Sub Focus the talent but the extra compassion needed to have a soothing housey break in the middle of such a filthy drum and bass track.

![the books beautiful people the books beautiful people2 [Fresh + Experimental] The Books Beautiful People](http://themusicninja.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/the-books-beautiful-people2.jpg)
Yes, I know I have been posting a lot of experimental music lately, but bear with me for one more post!
After four freaking years, The Books have finally released (through Pitchfork) a new song called “Beautiful People” from their forthcoming full-length album, The Way Out. I discovered them in 2004 have been hooked by their unruffled and mostly peaceful organic manipulation of electronics ever since. If you like or have ever been interested in non-intrusive experimental music, you HAVE to check them out.
If me saying so is not enough, take a look at Tokyo and There Is No There from their second album The Lemon of Pink released back in 2003.

![The Dø The Dø2 [French/Indie Pop] The Dø: A Mouthful](http://themusicninja.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/The-Dø2.jpg)
Two years after its European release, the debut album from French/Finnish duo The Dø (pronounced “dough”) is finally seeing stateside distribution. The chamber pop group’s cautious desire to maintain total control of the project, even when it meant holding back, is largely responsible for the delay. The music itself, however, with its delightful mix of playfulness, Finnish and English lyricism, gorgeous harmonies, and some eye-popping high notes, proves itself to be well worth the wait. The album’s first track, “Playgroud Hustle,” provides a exciting example, showcasing nearly all of these elements. A fife and martial drumbeat keep time in the background as you’re transported to Neverland, where kids know how to never grow up and adults had better watch out.
