[Album Review] Gorillaz – Plastic Beach by TheNeedleDrop.com

There is no better way I can top Anthony’s review of the Gorillaz’s third album Plastic Beach. Concise, informative and above all, honest!

Gorillaz – Plastic Beach Review

Gorillaz latest LP is as dynamic as their previous efforts, but much more conceptual and cohesive. This thing leafs through hip hop, new wave, soul, and trip hop without batting an eye; plus, there’s a ton of fantastic guest collaborators: Snoop Dogg, Mick Jones, Lou Reed, and De La Soul to name a few! There were a few bumps along the way, but this thing is a journey from beginning to end. There are some real 10/10s along the way, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this to any pop fan.

all in all, I feel at first like the album was much, much too slow for a Gorillaz album, but then I thought, Demon Days was a pretty big step from Gorillaz.

upon listening to Plastic Beach a second time, I realized it was phenomenal, I highly agree that it feels like there are some filler songs, but if you listen to the album once expecting Demon Days 2 or D-Sides 2, you’re not going to be excited, expect a new album, listen to it twice.

I know most people don’t like Stylo(or at first..) but I know the second time I heard it, I just couldn’t get enough. I feel like the album is a bit of the same.

A smart and IMHO spot-on review for the most part. I appreciated your comments on the genre synthesis going on in music in general these days, which is as you imply the result of contemporary technology and the concurrent “shrinking world.” This is a truly great album that I believe will grow on people with time. Initial reactions may be a bit “hmmm,” but with subsequent listens it becomes more and more addictive, and the rich layers of artistry reveal themselves.

Hi there, excellent site with good info. I actually think I will be coming back here often. There’s just one thing that annoys me and that’s the error I get when I try to post a comment. I often get the ’500 error’ page, and must retype the comment again to submit it.

ya know, i didn’t want to like this album. but it’s fantastic! best gorillaz album yet, and it’s early but maybe the best album of 2010. certainly the boldest!

I agree about how consistent the record is, and how excellent the synthesizers are. The previous Gorillaz records seemed to have bigger singles but I prefer a fuller album such as this one. I’m also a fan of the superb job by Gruff Rhys on Superfast Jellyfish; he fits right in.
