Sunday Night Soul [Vol. 11]

As more and more talent emerges in 2014, our Sunday Night Soul playlists have gotten increasingly larger. This week’s collection features over 50 unique songs to choose from, all featuring some supremely gifted artists. Some of our favorites this evening include particularly strong entries from newbies to the series like Nick Hakim, Kyan, Esco Williams, Johnny Stimson, Eric Bellinger, Fortune, Tanika and BOY/FRIEND, while other notable selections come from such familiar names as Sango, Jeftuz, Jakwob, BANKS, Sam Smith, Slakah The Beatchild, Mikky Ekko, Danity Kane, and Alicia Keys. That previous sentence doesn’t even remotely represent the immense amount of talent we’re working with tonight, however. The best way to find out for yourself is to press play and dive right in, because you’ve got plenty of swimming to do.

[Mashup] Treezus – Love Lockdown x Electric Feel (Kanye West x SeventhWonder)

’Treezus
Kanye West X SevnthWonder’

Mashups are a difficult art to master. The idea of blending two ostensibly compatible songs together seems simple enough in theory, but rarely does it ever work in execution. Often times they can sound forced or lazily mixed, leading to something that ends up being less than the sum of its parts. A truly great mashup should feel like a completely original composition on its own, something that sounds exceptional independently from its source material. There are very few producers who can accomplish this, but we may have to consider adding Treezus to that short list. While not much is known about the young producer, this mashup between TMN mainstays Kanye West and SevnthWonder certainly caught my attention rather easily. “Love Lockdown” has never been one of my favorite entries in Kanye’s vast library, but once mixed with “Electric Feel” it transforms from a sparse, melancholic love song, into a wondrous electronic joyride. After you stream/download the track above, feel free to checkout out some of Treezus’ other mashups as well, which you can listen to below or find on his official SoundCloud page.

[Hip-Hop] Aaliyah – Enough Said ft. Drake (Prod. Noah “40” Shebib)

Toronto’s own hip-hop/R&B superstar, Drake, has on many occasion shouted out the late, great Aaliyah and on this newly released single, likely from her upcoming posthumous album, we get a glimpse into what a collaboration between the two artists might sound like. The beautiful vocals of Aaliyah over the always intoxicating production of Drake’s good friend and incredibly talented instrumentalist, Noah “40” Shebib, make for an ethereal feel all but bringing the sorely missed icon back to life. Drake flows effortlessly over “Enough Said” regarding his always conflicted feelings about fame and fortune. As much of Drizzy and 40’s music, this one’s perfect for winding down a night of partying you hoped would never end.
