Sunday Night Soul [Vol. 20]

Hello ninjas, and welcome to Sunday Night Soul Volume 20. We embarked on this journey exactly 5 months ago with the goal of finding only the best tunes the internet had to offer. What started off as a fairly modest effort, has now grown substantially to the monstrosity you see here (and we mean “monstrosity” in the most loving way possible). We’re proud to see how the field has expanded to include various different soundscapes, increasingly pushing the genre to new limits. It’s an exciting time for R&B music, and we’re pleased to be to sitting right here in the front row, watching it evolve right before our eyes.Of course, you can hear that growth for yourself below.

This week’s collection includes multiple doubles. By doubles we mean you’ll be seeing more than a few names repeated multiple times throughout. Whether it’s through remixes or features, what it indicates is that plenty of your favorites were incredibly busy this week. Standouts come by way of Zuper, Dpat & Atu, SZA, White Lights, Bipolar Sunshine, Gallant, Z.Woods, Mila J, Rush Davis, Muzi, Ta-Ku, Fei-Fei, subdaio, elkco, Lido, ForteBowieTOKiMONSTAFiggy and Dolphin Tears. [Hip-Hop] Vic Mensa – When A Fire Starts To Burn (Freestyle)

Vic Mensa
When A Fire Starts To Burn (Freestyle)

As one of the hottest names in hip-hop right now, it’s pretty evident that Vic Mensa‘s flame isn’t about to burn out anytime soon. Continuing along with that theme then, the Windy City spitter brings that same smoldering intensity to his remix of a “When A Fire Starts To Burn,” one of the standout singles from his tourmates Disclosure. Never failing to deliver quality bars, the SaveMoney representative steps up the tempo a bit to keep up with the pulsating beat, showcasing some surprisingly versatility as he lands some quick witted punchlines and even finds time to send some quick shoutouts to recent collaborators like Disclosure (obviously), Smoko Ono, Kaytranada, Rockie Fresh and Tokyo Shawn. Between this and last week’s “Magic” remix, it’s clear Vic has no problem with stepping out of his boundaries as he prepares for a takeover in 2014. It’s all just a matter of when at this point.

[Remix] Disclosure – F For You (Feat. Mary J. Blige)

Disclosure
F For You ft. Mary J. Blige

UK duo Disclosure have experienced a meteoric rise since releasing Settle early last year. While they’ve been pleasing us ninjas with their melodic vibes for quite awhile now, they’ve finally just started to gain some steam here in the states, culminating in an appearance with Sam Smith on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last week and a three night residency at New York’s Terminal 5 that also included a performance alongside Ms. Mary J. Blige herself. That second performance was of course just a teaser for what’s been released today, as the group have just unveiled an exciting new remix of their hit, “F For You” featuring the legendary diva in all her glory. After posing for a photo with Q-Tip on Instagram over the weekend, it remains to be seen what else these two have up their sleeves during their U.S. takeover.

[Hip-Hop] Bishop Nehru – You Stressin (Prod. Disclosure)

Bishop Nehru
You Stressin (produced by Disclosure)

New York emcee Bishop Nehru and U.K.-based EDM duo Disclosure make for an unlikely combination. However, with the range that both have demonstrated, it should come as no surprise that their collaboration, released a few hours ago, turned out incredibly well. On “You Stressin,” Disclosure creates a glitchy, and lo-fi funky, instrumental that fits Nehru’s nonchalance to a key. Check this ill cut above.

[NEW] Disclosure – Latch (DJ Premier Remix)

Disclosure
Latch (DJ Premier Remix)

The burst of music released over the holidays has commenced and, of all the tunes under the tree, Disclosure‘s upcoming Settle remix album has us especially excited. Today, after an impressive first glimpse, the UK-based electronic duo let loose the highly anticipated rework of “Latch” by legendary hip-hop producer DJ Premier. While the original is an addicting masterpiece in itself, Premier slows the tempo down and adds a D’Angelo-esque piano melody with steady percussion making for a new-age take on the classic R&B of the 90s. The Settle remix album drops December 17th.

[Remix] Disclosure – January (Kaytranada Edition)

Disclosure
January (Kaytranada Edition)

Montreal-based producer Kaytranada has been one of this year’s most exciting newcomers with an excellent debut project, Kaytra Todo, and numerous impressive remixes. His style, full of 808s and R&B samples, certainly reflects the current direction of music production, but in a manner that is uniquely laid-back, yet danceable.

On his latest release, the Montreal-based artist reimagines Disclosure’s “January” continuing to expand the versatility of his repertoire. Disclosure’s infectious melodies and soulful vocals create the perfect canvas for Kaytranada, who’s version of “January” takes a groovy life of its own. This combination, in many ways, captures 2013’s music trends at their best falling on the intersection of EDM, hip-hop, R&B and trap. Enjoy above and look for this one on Disclosure’s official Settle remix album, out December 17th.
