[Hip-Hop] SZA – Babylon (feat. Kendrick Lamar)

SZA
Babylon feat. Kendrick Lamar

Just a day away from the release of her debut album, SZA keeps the buzz high letting loose a track featuring her fellow Top Dawg Entertainment  signee Kendrick Lamar. “Babylon” fits nicely with the tracks we have already heard from the project as SZA displays her uniquely airy sound over mellow, but heavy instrumental from DJ Dahi, the producer of a number of recent hits including “My Type of Party.” As expected, Kendrick delivers an amazing verse delving into the themes of introspection and solitude initially introduced by SZA. Enjoy this track above and look for on iTunes tomorrow.

[NEW] Alicia Keys – It’s On Again (Feat. Kendrick Lamar) (Prod. Pharrell)

Alicia Keys
It's On Again (Feat. Kendrick Lamar)

It seems the secret to soundtrack success these days is to include as many large name collaborations as possible. We’ve already seen that strategy pay dividends with Kendrick Lamar for Divergent and Pharrell with the entire soundtrack for Despicable Me 2. Considering the killing those two films experienced at the box office, it only makes sense that the heads behind The Amazing Spider-Man 2 came knocking at their doors looking for another blockbuster hit. We think they’ve definitely got one on their hands with “It’s On Again.”

The single opens rather aggressively, as Kendrick rips through another impassioned verse, delivered with a fiery intensity we’ve grown accustomed to hearing through his last few releases. It is an Alicia Keys song after all though, and the blaring electric guitars are swiftly replaced with far mellower production shortly after Kendrick wraps up his portion of the track. There’s still a fair amount of urgency in Alicia’s vocals, but given that Pharrell is behind the boards, you can be assured this is a tune that’s just as easy to groove out to.

Check out the single above, which will be available on iTunes tomorrow, April 1st. The entire soundtrack is set for release on April 22nd, while the film will hit theaters on May 2nd.

[NEW] Kendrick Lamar & Tame Impala – Backwards

Kendrick Lamar
Backwards Feat. Tame Impala

Although we still have no idea what Divergent is really about, we do know that its soundtrack has spawned some pretty interesting collaborations so far. This latest effort from Kendrick Lamar and Tama Impala however, easily takes the cake. The powerful single grabs your attention right off the bat, as Kendrick bombards the mic with a fierce intensity that’ll leave you taking at least a few steps “Backwards” yourself. The only reprieve from Kendrick’s full-scale assault comes through the contrastingly soothing chorus, which features a sample of Tame Impala’s “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards,” and helps provide the song with some balance. While it may seem like this one is coming out of left field for the Compton rapper, there is some precedent for its sound. In some ways the track almost seems like a mashup of the laidback style heard on “Money Trees” from Kendrick’s good kid, m.A.A.d city and his fiery remix of Imagine Dragons‘ “Radioactive.”

Check out the single above, and head over to Pitchfork if you’re interested in streaming the full Divergent soundtrack days before its release on March 11th. Featuring additional music from the likes of Skrillex, Ellie Goulding, Chance The Rapper, A$AP RockyGesaffelstein, Snow Patrol and more, the soundtrack can be pre-ordered through iTunes now as well.

Watch Performances From Last Night’s 56th Annual Grammy Awards

Let’s face it: the Grammy’s blow. They’re a total misrepresentation of the actual trends happening in music, and are usually at least two to three steps behind the curve. The Recording Academy is out of touch with the culture, and while the awards still have some meaning to them, the show lacks the same significance it had in previous generations. With that mini rant out of the way, I would like to congratulate all of last night’s winners, and don’t want to take anything away from the artists themselves or any of their accomplishments. What we are here to do today is highlight one of the positive aspects of the show: the performances. From 33 couples getting married during Macklemore & Ryan Lewis‘ rendition of “Same Love,” Kendrick Lamar‘s frenetic display during an insane mashup of “M.A.A.D. City” and “Radioactive” with Imagine Dragons, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr re-uniting as one half of The Beatles, and finally to Jay-Z and Beyoncé giving us a glimpse into their chemistry together on stage, this year’s awards had plenty to offer in terms of entertainment value. Check out some of the best ones below, and let us know your thoughts on which one was your favorite.

Daft Punk, Pharrell, Nile Rodgers & Stevie Wonder

[Remix] Imagine Dragons – Radioactive (Feat. Kendrick Lamar)

Imagine Dragons
Radioactive (Remix) (Feat. Kendrick Lamar)

Just when you thought it was safe to get this one out of your head, Imagine Dragons had to pull this stunt off. After a stellar performance together at tonight’s 56th Annual Grammy awards (which you can view below), the Las Vegas natives decided to surprise fans of hip-hop and rock alike with this smashing remix featuring the self-proclaimed king of hip-hop, Kendrick Lamar (a proclamation the Academy doesn’t seem to agree with). Regardless of tonight’s results, Kendrick put together a fiery spectacle that was easily the highlight of tonight’s show, and he brings that same intensity and passion to his guest verse on one of the most amplified, uplifting singles in recent memory. Stream the amazing collaboration above, and make sure to grab your copy from iTunes now.
