[Future] Lido & Canblaster – Superspeed

Lido & Canblaster
Superspeed

Shortly after announcing their collaborative EP last week and dropping the first single “Rush Hour,” Lido and Canblaster returned yesterday with the title track from the upcoming release. “Superspeeed” keeps the back and forth between the young, talented producers alive as they create a bouncy gem with vocals that help enforce the project’s name. Once again, Lido and Canblaster display a unique approach to composition striking a balance between relaxing soulful elements, glitchy breakdowns and club ready bass lines. The dynamic nature of their work thus far makes for still-interesting repeated listens–we’ve played this one about ten times today. Superspeed is due out on April 6th and can be pre-ordered on iTunes now. In the meantime, hit play above and try to keep up.

[Event Review] CRSSD Festival – San Diego, 3/14-15

DSC_8721

As festival season is upon us, many festival go-ers are itching to go to Coachella, especially when talking about the perfect California weather. Goldenvoice, hosts of Coachella, and FNGRS CRSSD have teamed up to create CRSSD Festival, a solution for those who can’t make it to the more high-profile festivals but still want to get a taste of the all-around chill California vibe. With that said, CRSSD festival was the perfect portrayal of sunny San Diego and what it represents.

The first ever CRSSD fest took place in the Waterfront Park from March 14 and 15, and featured a lineup with big names like Chromeo, Odesza, Flight Facilities and Empire of the Sun. While these unique electronic acts headlined the main stage a.k.a “Ocean View Live”, what stuck out the most to us was “The Palms” stage, which was decorated to fit a more laid-back and tropical vibe. Ranging from nu-disco to tropical house, the stage features some of the frontrunners of the dance scene, including names like Bakermat, Thomas Jack, Bixel Boys, Giraffage and Kaytranada. The middle stage, which was named “City Steps”, featured some heavyhitting house acts that span from future bass to G-House, notably Amtrac, Tensnake, James Murphy and Simian Mobile Disco.

’Giraffage – Hello’

Being that it was a debut festival, CRSSD fest did a phenomenal job of planning and set up. With KCRW Music Director Jason Bentley hosting the festival and filling in between sets with the crowd’s favorite music, there was never a dull moment at the park. Unlike some other major festivals, the Waterfront Park was the perfect size venue for CRSSD fest. The three stages were all easily reachable from one end to another, without overshadowing each other.

Now onto the stars of the show. The best acts on Saturday were undoubtedly Kaytranada and Giraffage. With back to back sets at “The Palms” stage, the two talented artists brought the house down with their immensely high energy performances. From the future bounce mastermind to the quirky creative genius, the two spun tune after tune that got the crowd going nuts. Empire of the Sun also put out an epic performance with their signature glamorous set up with stage dancers. There was no better way to close out the night after a long day of sweating and dancing. [Future] Lido & Canblaster – Rush Hour

Lido & Canblaster
Rush Hour

Lido and Canblaster, both pioneer’s in their own right, are teaming up for an EP due out in a couple weeks and, earlier today, blessed fans with the first single. “Rush Hour” plays out like an escalating back and forth between the two as their styles both shine all the while intertwining seemlessly. The opening of the song finds a balance between Lido’s knack for piano-led, grandiose openings and Canblaster’s frantic percussion before dropping into a banging, chime-layered trap beat that brings to mind Canblaster’s work as part of Club Cheval. The two young artists’ sounds collide for a manic climax before falling back into a beautiful, signature piano solo from Lido. Superspeed drops on April 6th and promises to be a delightfully unpredictable and forward-thinking project. Pre-order here.

P.S. If you’re a big fan of Lido, make sure to check out our pictures from his phenomenal debut performance in SF here.

Lido’s SF Debut at Rickshaw Stop, 3/12 [Event Review]

Lido-11

Lido<3
Lost (feat. Muri)

Over the last couple years, Lido‘s diverse compositions have played an important role in defining “Future” music, a broad term used to categorize the post-EDM wave of electronic artists. The young Norwegian producer’s sound defies definition by spanning from unconventionally jaw-dropping remixes to soulful, downtempo originals and everything in between. Lido’s versatile inspiration and talent makes for an eclectic live performance, which we were lucky enough to witness at his first ever San Francisco appearance at Rickshaw Stop last week.

Clad with keyboard, microphone, beat pad and electronic drum set, Lido’s stage set up features enough instruments, including his voice, for a full band allowing him to put on a performance that transcends categorization. Original tracks like “Money” and “I Love You” transformed beautifully live, but it was truly the unexpected turns that made the night. At one point, Lido broke down into straight gospel from his childhood–it was a moment when fans seemed to look around with a bit of confusion before being drawn in to its soulfulness. With such a broad range of styles, the transitions may have actually been the single most impressive aspect of the set. When Lido dropped his throwback original  “She Cried Ice,” which few realize is the piano sampled in Cashmere Cat‘s “With Me,” and merged it with “Lost,” the crowd completely lost it. The reactions aren’t what you normally think of at an electronic show given the emotional depth, which fostered an atmosphere of awe and positivity all the way up to his triumphant closing remix of Kanye West‘s “FourFiveSeconds.”

Palm Reader feat. Lido

The Athletixx crew have been bubbling in LA’s dance scene for quite some time now with some of the most intricate, forward-thinking tunes around. Hoodboi, one of the founding members, is preparing to release his debut EP on Fool’s Gold Records later this month and today we get the first single, and title track, from the project. Teaming up with the similarly burgeoning Norwegian producer, Lido, Hoodboi creates a future anthem with “Palm Reader.” Utilizing R&B vocal samples, manic percussion, playful synths and stellar composition, this one serves as a perfect representation of both artists’s styles and the emotional direction of current electronic music. Enjoy this jam above and, if you’re familiar with Hoodboi and Lido, try to splice out which parts each contributed. Hoodboi’s Palm Reader EP drops on March 24th and can be pre-ordered here.

[Sensual] Lido x Halsey – Slow

Lido<3
Slow (Lido x Halsey)

It’s getting harder and harder to talk about Lido without sounding like a broken record. Not only did he just release every remix he did in 2014 for free on his website (I’d have a sight reader handy if you aren’t familiar with the musical staff), but he also snuck in a sexy new original that samples Jaden Smith, has Halsey simply killing it with her vocal prowess, and is topped off with some extra assistance on guitar from HeavyxMellow. Right off the bat, you know you have a winner there.

This team flips the script in perspective with Halsey’s dive into a club “relationship,” interceded by the Jaden Smith sampled chorus and Lido’s smooth-as-always production. She’s addressed the message they were going for recently:

It’s no surprise that Lido is involved in something refreshing, and paired with Halsey’s dainty vocals and biting lyrics, he continues on his unflinching precedent he’s set for himself with his stellar tunes and remixes. If you’re looking for a download of this tune, it’s included in his remix care package linked above so don’t miss out!
