The Trap Dojo #51

If you thought that turning 50 would slow us down with providing your weekly fix of the best trap tunes, you were sorely mistaken. This week, D!RTY AUD!O and the guys to put on your watch list, Tropkillaz come through with one of the booty shakenest tunes of the week with “HAHAHA”. The twerktacular beats keep on coming with Spenda C on an original mid-track flip, along with Meaux Green, DMNDZ and K Theory dropping it down low. Next up, take a little trip across the pond for some of the hardest music coming out of the UK right now. You may not recognize the name I AM LEGION, but if you’ve never heard of Noisia and Foreign Beggars you need to catch up of your bass music fam. This track from the new side project is Noisia’s first foray into trap, and they are able to hang onto their signature heavy sound and with the Beggars’ sharp lyrics, this is one not to be missed. Not satisfied with only one beggars track, I just had to include this hard trapstyle remix from the one and only ETC!ETC!Tigerblood rounds out our journey to England with some dark spacey beats from their new Celestial EPLuminox brings us back with some of his killer style of trap, and a couple of my favorite gLAdiator tracks get the VIP treatment. Next up, Psychic Type does what he does best turning the 8-bit soundtrack to everyone’s favorite Gameboy game into hard hitting nostalgia-inducing trap beats. Valentino Khan, Louisiana Jones, OG Status, Watapachi and a few others keep showing us how the trap is properly run to round out the list. Huglife, with his smooth style of lovetrap remixes also just couldn’t be left out, and his remix of Lana Del Ray‘s “Young and Beautiful” close it out.

[Festie Review] Snowball – Winter Park, CO

As fireworks reflected off the snow covered grounds of Winter Park, as insane light shows reflected off the neighboring mountains, as music goers covered from head-to-toe in snow gear jumped up and down continuously as incredible artist after artist took to the stages, Snowball 2013 can rate itself up there as one of Colorado’s best winter time festivals.

The layout was set up perfect with one main stage and two tents, each far enough away from one another that you could hear each artist clearly but close enough you could dance your way from set to set without freezing your buns off. There were plenty of great vendors, lots of delicious warm food and heating areas so when the toes and fingers needed a quick warm-up people had a place to go.

The festival started off with a bang Friday with the musical talents of Zion I, Porter Robinson, Krewella, Kendrick Lamar and ending the night was none other than a Rado favorite, Big Gigantic. Kendrick Lamar gave the crowd poetic justice and a hell of a lot more. He took that stage and showed just what a true rap artist he was; his vocals crystal clear, his words flowing with the rhythms and his stage presence captivating. Then Big G got on the stage and lit it up, literally and figuratively. Their light show is one for the books and their live musical instrument set is what ranks them up there with one of the best live performances to see. It takes a true artist to be able to go on stage and play their instrument live and these boys do it with such ease.

Saturday Winter Park saw a down pour of snow but that did not stop any of the festival goers from making their way to see the shows. More layers, hand warmers and a nice hot beverage got this day off to a great start. I have to give a shout out to Luminox. During his set, his computer screen was distorted and he couldn’t see what he was playing. But instead of throwing in the towel, he busted out a desktop screen, plugged in his laptop, and kept dropping some unbelievable trap. Kudos Lum, huge kudos. Portugal the Man and Datsik brought amazing energy to the day and the night was finished with Colorado’s favorite man of lights, Pretty Lights. Derek Vincent Smith, the name given by his mother who is always in the crowd supporting, has never failed to put on a captivating and memorable show. Between the light show and PL’s choice of tunes, from his new hits all the way back to some old favorites like Radiohead’s “Everything in its Right Place”, PL shut down the night leaving everyone’s bodies in a state of music euphoria.

Sunday was no day for rest for this festival with huge artists still stacked. K Theory, Ishi, Grizmatik and Flosstradamus were just a few names who threw down the dub, the jazz and the dirty trap. Then the perfect closer for the ultimate snow weekend, STS9 took to the main stage. This instrumental band mixes the sounds of rock, funk, hip-hop, drum and bass and a little jazz to capture every form of music that was present at Snowball this weekend. As the final fireworks lit the sky, every face in that crowd was smiling with the ultimate love for all the amazing music that had taken place over the weekend.

To all the artists who were at Snowball, thank you for coming to Colorado and making us fall in love with your music all over again. For the day dancing shows to the night thumping after parties. To the Snowball staff, you all did an amazing job and I can’t wait to see what you have in store for next year. And of course, to all the festival goers, keep fuckin rocking.

[MP3 Playlist] The Trap Dojo: Volume #9

It’s Tuesday, so you know what that means. It’s time for The Trap Dojo to take over your eardrums, so grab a cup of lean, pop in that gold grill and get ready to trap out. Flosstradamus kicks off this week in a huge way, with this track from their new XO 2 EP released this week. While there was a little bit of controversy surrounding them in the first XO EP because they weren’t crediting the artists they were remixing, they remedied the situation on this one. If you still haven’t picked up the EPs, head over to x.flosstradamus.com and tweet about it to get it for free. Next, Ookay, who is definitely a regular figure here at The Dojo, brings us two tracks. The first is an original featuring Gucci Mane and the other, a collaboration with Snails. Both songs hit hard and are at critical swag levels. Luminox tries his hand at remixing Major Lazer’s “Original Don” and while you might not expect any remix to surpass Flosstradamus’ mix, Luminox does no wrong here and gives the song a new flair. DJ Slink has been giving us plenty of really chill tracks lately, and doesn’t disappoint this week, with his remix of The Shins “New Slang” finishing off the list, but also remixing “Clique” into an instant Slink banger. Next up, Zombass brings some extra creepy bass to get you ready for Halloween. Udachi hits us with some awesome spacetrap vibes of his new EP Space Travel Starter Kit you can pick up free right hereWVTVPVCHI and Skrubz were thinking alike this week, both releasing tracks called “Phat Bass”. Who do you think did it better? The next tracks are all guaranteed floor shakers, so turn up the subs and enjoy.

If you haven’t already, be sure to check out the last few volumes of The Trap Dojo and be sure to get all this weeks free tracks  here.

[MP3 Playlist] The Trap Dojo: Volume #5

This week has been absolutely massive for Trap music! I won’t bother to tell you about how Trap is conquering and infiltrating all forms of EDM, because, if you have been paying attention over the past couple of months I’m sure you already know (and if you didn’t know that, we welcome you to the wonderful world of the Dirty South). First up Wick-It The Instigator throws some classic dub sounds before switching it back to a straight-up “Dirty South Gangsta” beat. Next is a kid you definitely need to be familiar with because he is blowing up in a HUGE way. Already featured on two of the past Dojos 15 year old ∆lex Young brings us two absolute bangers; the first, a collab with The Hi-Yahs, “So Much” and the booty-dropping “Boomerang”.  Hey, while we’re on the subject, experts in booty dropping, shaking, bouncing and percolating, Bro Safari drop “That A$$” down to the floor once again. Watch out for another huge track from him later today. Another Trap Dojo regular, Ookay remixes a couple old favorites by Sidney Samson and Bingo Players. I hope this guy can keep making such great tracks so consistently, so far releasing 8 tracks in the last month that his Soundcloud profile has existed. Yet another big figure, Luminox, whose Trap mix of Bingo Players “Rattle” has been picked up by the likes of Ministry of Sound, remixes one of the two tracks this week by The Party Squad, bringing those Hardstyle sounds to the streets. The rest of the list basically serves as a who’s who in the Trap scene, with names like Oh Snap!!, gLAdiator, Trill Murray, Gent & Jawns along with a few lesser known names sprinkled in for good measure.

Oh, and one more thing. Here is the link to download all the free tracks this week. Enjoy.

[MP3 Playlist] The Trap Dojo #1

Welcome to the first volume of The Trap Dojo. This new weekly feature on The Music Ninja will bring you playlists of some of the best new Trap Music being released. This first volume includes some brand new tracks as well as a few of the hottest trap anthems of this past summer, and examples of the versatility of the genre with the many different styles on display.  If you regularly follow The Music Ninja, you may have a vague idea of what Trap Music is; or this may be a completely new musical experience for you. Trap, the label originally applied to Southern Hip-Hop artists like T.I., Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka Flame and others, has now been adopted to describe this new musical movement, using the gangster beat of that Southern Hip-Hop, along with pumping 808 bass sounds, crisp snares and hi-hats, and mixing it with a more electronic sound. One of the fastest growing genres, Trap music is being promoted and produced by the likes of Diplo, Skrillex and some of the biggest names in EDM. Like any genre though, it is best to let the music speak for itself, so turn up your speakers, crank the bass up to “earthquake” and enjoy the first Trap Dojo.
