[Denver Event] Mayer Hawthorne @ The Ogden (Oct 20th)

The recent uprising of soul music has been one of my favorites to watch, review, and pay attention to. Over the past few years we’ve seen acts like Michael Kiwanuka, Graffiti 6, and Mayer Hawthorne gain popularity as they sell out shows, get stage spots at the biggest festivals, and pay an amazing tribute to musical stylings of yesteryear. It seems like the internet/blog/hype machine crowd is the receptive to appreciating all types of music, which of course, makes us so happy. Nothing is more impressive than seeing people appreciate music for the simple fact that it’s good music.

Mayer Hawthorne is coming to Denver this Saturday, and we couldn’t be more excited. Andrew Cohen’s (Mayer Hawthorne) soulful sounding tunes are sure to take the crowd back into the 60’s and 70’s. From our experience, these soul shows are some of the most fun we’ve been to. There’s nothing quite like feeling like you’re in a different era. So, with that being said, make sure you head out to this show. It will most assuredly be a concert you’ll walk away from grinning ear-to-ear.

[New] SebastiAn (ft. Mayer Hawthorne) – Love In Motion (Skrillex’s Funkt-out Mix)

‘Love in Motion’, the 3-minute track by French electronic artist SebastiAn off his debut album Total, is nothing but a groovy and sexy master piece that will take you back in time to much funkier times. Yet what Skrillex has put forward cannot be further apart from the original. This Funkt-out mix lightly samples the vocals and some of the original rhythm, with obvious interruptions by the dubstep juggernaut. While it sounds completely mental as ever (not surprised coming from skrillex) the entire tracks plays smooth with intrinsic breaks and drops following the funky dynamics of the original. Solid Remix.

[Happy 420] A Playlist Of Songs To Get Lifted To

Towlie

Here at The Music Ninja, we acknowledge that the relationship between music and marijuana go hand in hand…and we are pretty sure that a good number of our regular visitors probably puff the magic dragon themselves. Being this site’s resident toker, I thought I’d share with you a few of my all time favorite songs to get lifted to on this 4/20.

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony – The Weed Song

’Bone Thugs
N

This song is such a staple and reminds me of when I first started getting lifted in college. Bone Thugs really capture the essence of being high with a dreamy and atmospheric sound making this song so easy to repeat over and over.

DJ Quik – Bombudd II

’Bombudd II.mp3′

Not the typical DJ Quik song. Usually he gives us a nice danceable hip hop beat, but this reggae driven track sets such a great mood when you’re lifted. Quik talks about all the things he feels when he smokes be it paranoid, overjoyed, becoming aware or not even feeling a thing, all accompanied with the sounds of bong rips in the background.

Mayer Hawthorne – Green Eyed Love

I love Mayer Hawthorne for a lot of reasons. His polished vintage sound is certainly one of them, but we both seem to have the same admiration with what he describes as his green-eyed love. Enjoy watching the clouds from above on this track.

Bob Marley & The Wailers – Easy Skanking

And finally, what 4/20 playlist would be complete without some Bob Marley. Such a joyous track…plus you really can’t get more blatant in a song than saying “excuse me while I light my spliff, good God I’ve got to take a lift.”

Happy toking everybody. Enjoy burning one down this afternoon listening to these songs. As always, be safe and responsible.

[Hip/Hop] Cookin’ Soul x Chuuwee – Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out (feat. Mayer Hawthorne)

The Spanish producers/DJs that make up the trio of Cookin’ Soul, recently released their newest mix-tape, “The Date Tape” . Joining them on the mic is up and coming rapper, Chuuwee. The Date Tape takes the listener on an emotional and educational tour on love and relationships.

While the mix is solid from start to end, the stand out track is “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out (feat. Mayer Hawthorne)”. Hawthorne’s authentic, soulful crooning is mellow and painful, but beautiful. Chuuwee is a legit wordsmith, who flawlessly flows over a funky groove that is a fitting closer for this Cookin’ Soul release.

Mayer Hawthorne – Christmas Time Is Here

We are a couple days away from the magical time of throwing presents in our faces. To help you get in the Christmas spirit, Mayer Hawthorne has a early warm present for us.

Happy Holidays everyone,

All the best Christmas songs were written by Jews, and Chanukah songs suck. This is my favorite Christmas tune, sung over the Vince Guaraldi instrumental.

Cheers,
Mayer Hawthorne

Not the most interesting video I’ve seen but I just like Mayer Hawthorne way to much for me not to post this jazzy relaxing song accompanied by slow motion skateboarding and the beautiful scenery of San Fransisco.
