[NEW] Vic Mensa – Codeine Crazy (Icarus Story)

Codeine Crazy (Icarus Story)

Fresh off a killer performance at Pitchfork Music Festival, Vic Mensa has released his own unique take on Future‘s “Codeine Crazy“, first premiered live during his set this past weekend. The timing couldn’t be more perfect, coinciding with the release of Future’s DS2 album, while also following the release of Vic’s recent collaboration with Skrillex, titled “No Chill“.

This isn’t your typical rap cover where you’d expect an artist to slap a new coat of paint on a rehashed beat and simply call it a “freestyle.” Instead, we find Vic channeling his inner rockstar as he opens up about the struggles of flying too close to the sun (a la Icarus) on his rise to stardom and how he copes with the new pressures. The angsty, guitar driven backdrop sets the stage perfectly for Vic to experiment in a way like never before, while also allowing longtime collaborators Stefan Ponce and Papi Beatz to show off some of their range from a production standpoint as well.

Vic is currently preparing to release his Roc Nation debut, Traffic, sometime later this year. The album already boasts features from heavyweights like Kanye West and Skrillex, though remaining details seem to be sparse at this point. Be on the lookout for the talented emcee in your city as he embarks on his Traffic Tour to close out the summer.

[Hip-Hop] Mick Jenkins – Get Up Get Down (Prod. by Stefan Ponce & THEMpeople)

MICK JENKINS
Get Up Get Down [Prod. by Stefan Ponce & ThemPeople]

Mick Jenkins broke through in a big way last year with the release of his widely acclaimed mixtape, The Water[s]. Keeping consistent with the aquatic themes, the Chitown native has finally announced his highly anticipated follow-up, titled Wave[s], will be dropping on August 21st. Along with the announcement comes the latest single from the project, “Get Up Get Down” which will follows previous releases like “P’s & Q’s” and “Alchemy“.

Urging listeners to “get up, get out, get down,” this fresh tune is a bit more laid-back and loose compared to Mick’s typical thought-provoking material, though a lot of that credit can be given to producer Stefan Ponce who’s best known for crafting hit records for the likes of Childish GambinoVic Mensa and Chance The Rapper. Along with Ponce, Wave[s] also boasts production from Kaytranada, THEMpeople, Lee Bannon and Mulatto, and includes features from Saba, Sean Deaux and The Mind. You can stream the new joint above and check out the tracklist below after the jump.

[NEW] Vic Mensa – Down On My Luck (Prod. Stefan Ponce)

Vic Mensa
Down On My Luck

After nearly burning out speakers everywhere for two months straight with the wobbling bass of “Feel That,” Vic Mensa provides some relief to fans in the form of a spacey, ethereal cut entitled “Down On My Luck.” Continuing to experiment with new sounds in 2014, Vic’s latest single draws heavily from Chicago house, similar to the Smoko Ono remix of “Magic” that dropped earlier this year. Complete with a skittering bassline, cascading vocals, and lush, intricate synth work, the expertly produced single is one that feels right at home on the dancefloor or in the comfort of your own living room.

With the slew of stellar releases that he’s been sending our way over the last few months, we don’t imagine the Chitown emcee will be feeling “down on his luck” for much longer. Check out the link above, and stay tuned for any details that may emerge about the talented SaveMoney rep’s upcoming project.
