[Indie-Dance/House] Dr. Dre – Forgot About Dre (The Golden Pony Remix)

Dr. Dre
Forgot About Dre (The Golden Pony Remix)

The Golden Pony have brought their afro driven deep-disco flair to The Chronic: 2001‘s “Forgot About Dre” and it’s been stuck on a permanent loop in this writer’s TMN cubicle. Paying homage to their classic influence has been the modus operandi for The Golden Pony’s remix choices lately as we’ve seen them take on Simon & Garfunkel, Tears For Fears and Daft Punk to reference a few, but our first exposure to them tackling the world of hip-hop has in our eyes been our most revered entry into the TGP production catalog. Taking its shape behind a pitched down vocal hook from the original chorus and an almost progressive-house meets indie-dance bass line and pad selection, their remix wonderfully accentuates Dre’s timeless verses. We’ve seen some admirable stabs at remixing Dr. Dre for the dance hall but no one has yet harnessed that gangster shine within a straight four-four house track in such a groovy manner until now. If your head is bobbing as unconsciously as ours and The Golden Pony’s remix of “Forgot About Dre” just has to be in your music player’s library then you’re in luck. This one is being given away as a free download, so grab it in exchange for a Facebook “like” here.

[Nu-Disco/Synth-Pop] The Golden Pony ft. Suntalk- Bonfire

The Golden Pony
Bonfire Feat. Suntalk

It’s been a little while since we checked in with one of our favorite tastemaking Deep Disco outfits, The Golden Pony, and in between their time hustling as some of NYC’s most influential electronic promoters, they’ve managed to issue a follow up to their debut original “Tiny Purple Fishes” with a house meets disco groover “Bonfire”. Featuring another NYC band Suntalk on vocals, “Bonfire” beautifully flits between the electronic indie dance output of camps like Future Classic and 4AD and straightforward nu-disko and house music structures. While TGP has made their name mostly by reaching into the remix cookie jar, their original tunes have been the hook which keeps us ninjas coming back for more. “Bonfire” paces itself briefly, starting off slow and steady, before bouncing in cheeky vocals and an appropriately addictive, simple bass line. This one pulled from us an immediate smile, and music which exhibits this quality has always been some of our favorite. Grab the free download here in exchange for a ‘heart’ on Hype Machine.

[Deep-Disco] Simon & Garfunkel – The Sound of Silence (The Golden Pony Remix)

Simon & Garfunkel
The Sound Of Silence (The Golden Pony Remix)

Brooklyn’s favorite Electro-Disco revivalists The Golden Pony have had quite the knack for their selections in remixing from Daft Punk to Avicii to Carousel (a track we posted a few months back) and now Simon & Garfunkel, the duo seem to pair their beats symbiotically even with such a classic original like S &G’s “The Sound of Silence”. TGP take their listeners all the way back to 1964 when records were still manufactured on wax and love was as free as that killer whale Willy, but also bring “The Sound of Silence” back to 2013 with a techno sounding deep, arpeggiated synth punching its way over the original chord progression and Paul Simon’s unmistakable vocal intonations sounding as pristine and gorgeous as the day they were recorded. The tune comes as part of a new project from The Golden Pony entitled “Golden Classics” which will see the boys adding their funky-fresh groove to classic tunes from the 60’s all the way up to the 90’s, and as always it’s being offered up as free download through, so grab it while you’re here.

Carousel – Another Day (The Golden Pony Remix)

Carousel-Another Day (The Golden Pony Remix)

As the weather begins to take a much sunnier turn (much like our disposition), our souls begin to crave for that Summery, daytime-disco sound fit more for a rooftop party than a sweaty nightclub. It appears East Coast electro-disco revivalists The Golden Pony caught our spirit all the way across the country in Brooklyn, and gave us this playful remix of TMN favorites Carousel and their latest happy-dance single “Another Day”. TGP effectively strips away the playful lead guitar riff from the original while minimally toning down Jackson Philips’ angelic vocal reverberations in favor of letting a lush synthesizer take the lead. Last week The Golden Pony’s remix of Daft Punk and Panda Bear’s Random Access Memories entry “Doing It Right” racked up over 100,000 plays on Soundcloud as well as an appearance on The Hype Machine’s coveted Top-Ten for the week. If The Golden Pony continues to maintain their disco-dance integrity paired with excellent choices in remixing, it’s pretty safe to say we will be seeing more from the duo in the near future. Grab a free download of TGP’s take on “Another Day” above.
