TWRK Talk Twerk, History and Mad Decent EP [TMN Exclusive Interview]

Together, producers Benzi and Esentrik make up TWRK. This New York duo has been making waves with copious amounts of enormous remixes, several originals, as well as Diplo & Friends mixes; and yesterday, they released their WE ARE TWRK EP on Mad Decent, which you can stream through out this piece and purchase here.

WE ARE TWRK is made up of four tracks, including collaborations with Fly Boi Keno, The Rej3ctz, Dougie F, and San Holo. Although the sound sticks to the twerk style, each track brings its own flavor to the table. In chatting with the guys for an interview, they provided some insight on what makes twerk so darn appealing. As they can tell you from their live shows, crowds get down and dirty when their dance floor-rattling beats drop. TWRK is currently on tour, and tickets are available here. Aside from chatting about twerk in the interview, the guys delve into their history with the project, their live show, the new EP and what’s to come in the future.

’TWRK – Helicopter’

TMN: How did each of you get into creating music originally?

Esentrik: I heard N.E.R.D’s album, “In Search Of…” and it changed my life. Listening to the Neptunes’ production made me appreciate music in a different way and it was a big influence in me DJing and producing.

TMN: How did you two first meet and TWRK come about?

Esentrik: We met on the internet. I would send Ben demos/remixes so I could get on one of his mixtapes and that lead to working on songs together.

TMN: What do you think it is that attracts people to the twerk style of music?

Esentrik: I think it’s the hard hitting drops with clever sample chops keeps people interested. At the end of the day, it’s all about having fun and our music brings that. Continue reading

The Trap Dojo #39

We’re kicking off this week with the first track of the new Animal LP from Bro Safari and UFO!. This whole album is filled with killer tracks from all sides of bass music from Trap to Moombah and Dubstep to DnB, and the best part is that its free. Download the whole album here.  Next up, there are a couple tracks from another hot release this week, the Spotlight 1 compilation, which is full of the best EDM around in all styles, with Smookie Illson and K-Theory bringing that trapstyle to the party. When it comes to CRNKN we know him as one of the hottest names in the trap world, with massive track after huge collaboration, and while this time he brings us something completely different, the scale is just as big as his trap songs. CRNKN takes the Must Die! trap original and turns it into a beautiful house beat for a little 4 on the floor for your day.  I promised myself that i wouldnt fill the list with Daft Punk remixes, but there were a couple that you really have to hear, and both of them are of “Doin It Right,” one of my favorite songs on Random Access Memories. First off Vinnie Maniscalco chops and screws the vocals in just the right way while putting a juke/footwork twist on the already high tempo track. I’m saving the other remix for last. Leave it to Valentino Khan to think that it isn’t enough to release a killer new moombah track, but to trap it out himself too. Willy Joy is back too, reminding you of rapper Mike Jones‘s personal phone number, just in case you want to drop him a line. TWRK may be fairly new to the scene, but are absolutely bringing the beats to make her twerk. This collab with Canadian 4KORNERS is easily one of the dirtiest songs I’ve ever heard. “The Whip”  by Foxsky gets a “PLUR Trap” remix from ETC!ETC! on this EP from the Mad Decent/Jeffrees label, along with some amazing remixes by The Reef, Udachi and Vass. Get all of them here for free. Up next, from across the pond,  an ode to that pair of “Dirty Vans” that hold so many memories by The Ninetys. Party Favor has always brought the ruckus, and this new release on Ministry of Sound definitely goes all in. This is a public service announcement from ︻╦╤─ ƱZ ─╤╦︻ reminding you to always КЄЄⱣ Ị₮ ₮ЯỊⱢⱢ. The last few tracks definitely keep it trill with Kaytradana and Kastle who always create some of the most beautiful and evocative soundscapes in Trap music. Finally, Ray Complex slows down “Doin It Right” and makes it the perfect nighttime drive song.

The Trap Dojo #35

Last week we included the newest tune from TNGHT, “Acrylics”. A massive tune in its own right, but this week, DonKong had a fever, for which the only cure was more cowbell and absolutely turned it up in this remix. Next, the newest dancefloor anthem from Macklemore gets a huge trap twist from Dance Floor Junkies. With a brainmelting drop filled with lazers and horns, this is sure to keep everybody’s hands up and get all of the party people sweating. A new song from Flosstradamus is always something to get us excited, and this 4/20 special is no exception. The first of many smokers anthems we’re bringing you this week, this FKi collab is just as hazy as you would expect, with killer lyrics. TastyTreat also released an awesome 4/20 banger using Christina Milan and Lil Wayne‘s lyrics and chopping them up with some finely crafted synths for an emotionally charged dancefloor beast. Lil Wayne isn’t going away yet though as Sam F Brings us another hectic remix. Rihanna gets a trip to the trap by The Cataracts & Borgeous. The rest of the list is filled with bangers, with every influence from the most gangster of rap to progressive house and hardstyle. Zombass & Huoratron get very dark and occultist at the end before some deep night time vibes take over to finish it off.

The Trap Dojo #32 + TMN Premiere Zomboy – Here to stay (TastyTreat Remix)

’Zomboy – Here To Stay (TastyTreat Remix) FREE DOWNLOAD’

We have a very special treat this week kicking off the Trap Dojo. We’re premiering the sick new track from TastyTreat, a remix of Zomboy‘s track “Here to stay”. Featuring UK Dancehall star Lady Chann, this one starts off fairly minimal, with a heavy subbass line and a smooth horns section before Channs lyrics build up to a dramatic drop of carefully organized chaotic synth wobbles. The second drop is less chaotic and has alot of that heavy grinding trap flavor before the horns take us out. TastyTreat just signed to Bird Peterson‘s Teenage Riot Records and has a great looking year ahead of him, especially if he keeps releasing tracks as exciting as this. Go show him some love on Facebook to get this one for free.

Following up, Kid Womp takes on my favorite song from TNGHT and absolutely destroys it. Keeping that minimal style of the original, Womp rearanges the chimes into something so similar yet so different from the original. The next couple tracks are from the new Brillz album “Twonk”. The first one is a huge party starter, sure to get the dancefloor jumping, while “Smashi Tup” will have your head banging with the heavy bass lines, and has a really cool horns section sure to get your feet shuffling. Bird Peterson is taking his game a little further with this glitchy track. Ookay has a couple songs on the Dojo this week, first up, what i’m assuming is an April fools joke with “Oorah”, just listen to it all the way through and you’ll understand why. The other track is the totally serious “Star Wars”, starting off with a trapped out version of the Mos Eisley Cantina song, at just the moment you would expect Han to shoot Greedo, the whole room is destroyed by lasers. The second half of the song is the Imperial March that will have you letting out your darkside on the dancefloor when it drops. Continuing our Space theme is the trancy Proletariats remix of some Cosmic Gate. The rest of the list is filled with with Trap bangers and trapped out hip hop, before Shackles takes us back to space to chill things out a little bit before Kastle really crushes it with the vibes for an emotional finish.
