[Future/House] Zeds Dead & Oliver Heldens – You Know

Zeds Dead & Oliver Heldens
You Know (Original Mix)

At its base, future house evolved as a genre when it drew from the elements of established genres like funk, deep house, tech-house, disco, and many more. Oliver Heldens saw the lack of groove in big room music when developing his trademark style and saw a possibility for it to be combined with house to be suitable for the main stage. Zeds Dead, on the other hand, have played a monumental role in the development of harder dance music styles and have released tracks of too many genres to count. When we heard they collaborated on a track, we immediately speculated as to what it could sound like.

The musical baby of Zeds Dead and Oliver Heldens, “You Know,” rides the coat tails of the future house movement but exudes a special charm. The Dutch young gun and Canadian producers keep listeners on the their toes as they guide a future funky house train that contains various components of drum n bass, cheery synth dabbles, and scraping bass snarls. Overall, “You Know” presents a combination of the best of both artists and sets both Oliver Heldens and Zeds Dead for massive 2015.

[Event Review] Mad Decent Block Party – San Diego

(PC: Fixation Photography)

Last Sunday, following the recent heat wave that everybody would soon forget about, Mad Decent took their members and friends to sunny San Diego. The venue is located at Park Boulevard and Imperial Avenue near Petco Park and downtown SD. With only one giant stage put in the parking lot area, the artists definitely brought down the house with their high-energy performances and star power. Participating in this year’s lineup, we have artists like Cashmere Cat, Diplo, Flosstradamus, Laidback Luke, STRFKR, Thurz, TJR and Zeds Dead. It was a great mix of music, showing off their roster and connections with diversity.

With Kaytranada‘s set being cancelled due to personal reasons, STRFKR started off the one-day festival with some of their indie psych rock music to get the crowd in the mood. They put on a great show as people were just starting to roll into the venue and vibing their way into the crowd. Their mellow and enjoyable tunes are the epitome of a great band performing at a great festival.

Next up we have Thurz, a member of the underground hip-hop duo U-N-I. It was a smart choice for him to come on after an indie band. His high-energy performance definitely got the crowd going by playing some familiar rap songs and some of his own. At this point there was already a good amount of people in the audience, slowly and reluctantly making their way into the front of the stage even though the immense heat was getting onto everybody. Cashmere Cat, who was the next act, warmed up the crowd even more with his clever remixes of trap and hip hop tracks. His music covers a wide range of genres and sub-genres which take everybody on a fun and exciting joyride of both hype and chill music.

TJR was definitely the dark house of the festival. For those who weren’t familiar with who he is, the crowd referred him as “the mysterious bald guy who stole the show at Mad Decent”. The talented producer from Connecticut showcased his skillset with a variety of turn-up jams spanning the trap, house and funk genres. He incorporated funky drops and fast-paced trap beats into remixes of popular songs, which got the crowd pumped up like no other. His jaw-dropping performance definitely left the crowd in awe.

As the sun set and the heat gradually submerged into the horizon, the crowd was all warmed up and ready to get crazy. From the moment Laidback Luke got on stage, that’s when the real block party started. The Dutch DJ/producer got everybody on their feet and bobbing their head left and right with his incredible electro/deep house goodness. It is difficult as a house DJ to channel the right energy into a crowd at an open stage/venue, but Laidback Luke did just that. With lasers shining at your eyeballs, you just couldn’t help but dance your pants off to these hard-hitting house beats.

One amazing act following another, the artist introduced and welcomed Flosstradamus on stage. This is what the crowd came here to see, and what Floss were the best at doing. Needless to say, the Chicago-based duo delivered and killed it with style. The crowd was super loud and riled up, especially when they dropped a song like “Mosh Pit”, that there were a good amount of moshing going on throughout his set. To bring up the energy even more, the two hype men brought out special guest Waka Flocka, who gave his 110% at pumping up the stage with his anger and aggressiveness.

The headliner of the festival and Mad Decent’s frontman, Diplo, was undoubtedly the best act of the night. With so much energy and creativeness in his performance, Diplo always brings the most entertaining and trendiest electronic music to the stage. Mixing hip-hop with trap and electronica, the 35-year-old veteran never ceases to amaze everyone and never stops the innovation of his music. From taking off his shirt to bringing girls on stage for a twerk contest, Diplo sure knows what the crowd wants to hear and see. There was never a dull moment in the entire duration of Diplo’s set, and the crowd got about as loud and turnt up as they could be.

Amongst the shuffling pits, dance circles, exchange of kandies and fist pumping, the celebration never stopped for the Mad Decent crowd. Ending the night with a bang, Zeds Dead provided everyone with some hardcore drum & bass and dubstep. At this point, the lasers and lights were in full throttle. And with the heavy bass shaking the whole place down, you just couldn’t help but viciously headbang back and forth.

By assembling their roster and inviting friends and fellow artists to perform at their shows, Mad Decent has done it once again. With that said, our Ninja crew will be back for next year’s block party. We can’t wait to see what these talented performers have in store for us in the near future.

[Show Preview] Dead Rocks – Zeds Dead @ Red Rocks, Morrison CO 7/3

I’m going to tell you a story about a magical place located in Colorado. Where the Great Plains meet the Rocky Mountains, there is an amphitheater carved right into the side of mountains thanks to an architect we call Mother Nature. The area was once called the Garden of Angels, and anyone who visits it will understand why, giant red sandstone rocks tower on each side of the stage area making an ideal place for all musical performers. Red Rocks is a concert venue alive with life where people, music, and nature collide to form an ecstasy combination of life.

This Thursday, July 3rd, before the celebrations of the good old US of A, two unbelievably talented gentlemen from Canada are coming to turn Red Rocks upside down for one night and take the rocks to the dark side courtesy of AEG Live. Zeds Dead would like you all to come celebrate Dead Rocks with them as they bring their hard pounding electric and dubstep sounds to Colorado. Renowned for their insane original melodies and electrifying remixes, loved by critics for their creativity, and adored by fans for their heart palpitating shows, ZD is ready to rock the Rocks until the stars shine and the lights play from the front of the amphitheater all the way to the back.

But let’s not forget the other two headliners hailing all the way from Stockholm to add a certain bounce to the Rocks. Maybe Dada Life puts it best when they welcome all listeners to Dada Land: ‘This is Dada Land. Get ready to arrive beautiful and leave ugly. There are no rules but the rules of Dada. Don’t look back in the past. Always go forward. And whatever you do: don’t trust us.’ But we are going to trust them to play their trippy melodies and head swelling notes that capture our ears, minds, and hearts.

Joining ZD and DL are Joey Bada$$, Manic Focus, Grand Theft, and Basscrooks and special guest Omar Linx. Do I really need to say anything more? So Colorado, come out to your favorite venue on Thursday and be part of a little history making when our beloved Red Rocks becomes the wicked and raving Dead Rocks.

[MP3 Playlist] The Trap Dojo #27

This weeks Trap Dojo is divided into four sections. The first track, from thefaded. kicks off with a massive build up that will have you saying “Wait For It” to drop that almost never seems to come. The mood and pace continues to build over the next few tracks, including the UZ remix of “Cowboy” by Zeds Dead, a remix of Baauer’s “DumDum” and climaxing with Alex Young‘s insane remix of Ah Yeah”. The next four songs are all spaced out trap bangers. Starting it off with the deep and jazzy “Ride Up”, heRobust infuses some electro beats, and the other two tracks lay down a big room sound thats still thuggin enough to hear coming out of the trunk of a Cutlass. I should warn you that the next section is going to be an all out assault on your senses. Starting with some dark drumwork in the intro, “Brain Splat” drops a bassline that will leave your head splattered over your backseat like Marvin from “Pulp Fiction”DJ Snake throws some dark trap with a hardstyle twist over French MC, Stromae’s aggressive bars, then Team Bayside High does something crazy and makes the heaviest track we’ve heard to date. Remixing none other than Pantera, they are able to chop the heavy riffs into filthy trap beats, and June gives us some spooky bass to finish. Our final section includes a remix of the “Django Unchained Theme” by Kissy Sell Out,  some Cyber-Footwork from the LOLGurlz and three progressively more emotionally evocative Love trap songs for a beautiful send off.

I hope you enjoyed this trip through the extremes of trap. Download all the free tracks right here
