[Electronic/Filthy] Innerpartysystem – American Trash (Porter Robinson Remix)

“Prodigy” would not give credit to Porter Robinson’s years of experience, but there is really no other way to describe the 18-year-old producer hailing from North Carolina. In American Trash, Porter Robinson creepily builds up momentum to what can only be described as a face melting drop. He delivers some of his hardest hitting electro beats to date, yet he stays away from the occasional dubstep wobble of his previous tracks. This shows his versatility, as well as his growth as an artist, by the fact he is not sticking to one hit-producing mold. An absolute club banger, sure to set dance floors on fire where ever it is dropped.

[Filthy] Lykke Li – Paris Blue (Death To The Throne Remix)

Dubstep has come, and it is very much here to stay. We have come to know the Arizona native Death to the Throne for his sporadic, yet top notch electronic productions, and Paris Blue pushes the bar up even higher. I’m not always an advocate of change, but in the case of Paris blue change is good, very very good. Building up the intro with perfect ethereal synths to complement Lykke Li, Death to the Throne flips the track on its head with the drop, delivering some of the dirtiest and scratchiest wobble I have ever fucking heard. The fast tempo gets your heart racing, making you either want to dance, or punch something…or who knows, maybe a little bit of both.

[Hip/Hip] Lupe Fiasco – Words (Ft. Skylar Grey)

Lupe Fiasco is back, and this time his “Words” take a more political turn. In the song, Lupe flawlessly delivers his lines, and although his tracks have always been filled with meaning, “Words” touches closer to home for many people around the world. Parting from the generic hip-hop beat, Lupe lays down his tightly knit rhymes over a Glitch Mob styled electronic beat. The deep base kicks add an extra punch to his lyrics. The chorus however, is not as praise-worthy. Though it provides a catchy hook for the song, the singing is nothing new or unique, and Skylar Grey’s voice sounds overly filtered. Skylar’s choice of lyrics give the vibe of a nostalgic, regretful love song, rather than reflecting the political incentive fueling Lupe. The chorus does not add or detract from the song, and thus makes “Words” an enjoyable listen and a clear example of Lupe’s lyrical prowess.

[Electro] Porter Robinson – The Wildcat

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is definitely a quote Porter Robinson takes to heart. After the beatport topping runaway success of “Say My Name”, Porter Robinson returns with “The Wildcat” which keeps all the same heavy, aggressive electro beats we have come to know and love. Even though he is still relatively new to the dance music scene, his maturing style shows obvious traces of great Electro/Dance influences, from the multilayered build reminiscent of Wolfgang Gartner, to the brain trauma inducing drops à la Skrillex. With “The Wildcat” Porter Robinson delivers another hard-hitting club filler, and shows no signs of slowing down quite yet.

[Electro] Fake Blood – Medieval (original)

With a new Fake Blood original production, you never really know what to expect.  Theo Keating’s (aka Fake Blood) style has consistently evolved from his early days in Simian to the more dance-friendly act we now know him as, yet he never sticks to a specific genre. From the disco based nostalgic feel of “I Think I Like It” to his dance floor aimed club banger “Mars”, Fake Blood always brings something new to the table, and “Medieval” is no different. Staying away from the big buildups of Mars, yet keeping the strong bass line, “Medieval” gets straight to the point. The melodious backbone makes this track a good listen both at home and on the dancefloor.

[Electro] Afrojack – Replica (Original Mix)

2010 has been an astronomically successful year for the Dutch native Nick Van de Wall, or as many of you may know him better as, Afrojack. From being unranked in 2009, to snagging 19th place in this years DJ Mag’s Top 100 Djs, it is fair to say Afrojack is on the road to success. Stealing the spotlight at his performances across Europe and Australia, Afrojack is exponentially increasing his fan base, and rightfully so. With the release of Replica, a single that’s been kept tightly under wraps, we see Afrojack take a new musical direction, with dramatic drops accentuated by deafening baselines. Though Afrojack shows a new and refreshed sound, influences of his signature “beep” style, which served as the catalyst to his success, are still very much present. Sure to be a club banger around the world, Replica shows promise of even greater things to come for Afrojack

[hip/hop + dubstep] Zeds Dead & Omar Linx – Out For Blood

Canadian artists are a rare appearance on the music ninja, so in this case I’m proud to present double supersized order of Canadian talent. The Toronto born pioneers of dubstep, Zeds Dead, team up with fellow Toronto based rapper, Omar LinX, to produce what could be the hybrid to bridge the existing gap between dubstep and hip-hop. Omar LinX’s rugged voice and sharp-tongued lyrics, filled with wit, biting humour and clever wordplay, are complemented by smooth, melodic hooks and laced together with signature scratchy Zeds Dead basslines so deep you might be left breathless. Omat Linx’s aggressive style balances perfectly with the intensity Zeds Dead brings to the table. With this song pulsating from your speakers, any attempt to stop the resulting adrenaline rush from spreading would be in vain.
