Australian quartet The Rubens only formed in February, but from the slick yet lazy blues of ‘Lay It Down’, you’d think they’d spent their whole lives playing together. The raw guitar and deeply impassioned of vocals lead one to draw comparisons with early Kings of Leon; and if these Sydney boys keep writing songs like ‘Lay It Down’, they could hit the big time, just like KoL did.
Superstar remixer Martin Solveig collaborates once again with electro act Dragonette on ‘Big In Japan’ (find earlier track ‘Hello’ here). A big punchy pop anthem, ‘Big In Japan’ features Idoling!!! and from the off, is something special. Peter Peter is a rising star in the current French-Canadian folk scene. His debut album was released all the way in March, to quiet critical acclaim. ‘Tergiverse’ is the first single from the album, and features the beautifully wistful vocals of Béatrice Martin, otherwise known as Coeur de Pirate. This tender ballad is the stuff of dreams, and will capture the hearts of many, and put Peter Peter on plenty of ‘ones to watch’ lists in the new year.

Rising Seattle star Grieves dropped his album Together/Apart on June 21, along with the beautiful ‘Lightspeed’, a slow-burning new track that is set to get in your head from the off. Featuring nostalgia-inducing lyrics about Tamagotchis, ‘Lightspeed’ will strike many a chord with 90/s kids in particular. This piano and handclap-led rap has something for fans of all genres and will no doubt make Grieves very popular on the end-of-year lists.
For All The Girls is a project by Utah-based Damien Fairchild. He writes his songs “for the girls I am in love with or have loved at one point in time”, and releases one per month until next year, when his album comes out. Fairly standard far for most singer-songwriters, but Damien is a 13 year old, and an extraordinarily talented one at that. And judging by the glorious retro-pop vibe of ‘Phylicia’ as well as his previous work, Fairchild can rest assured of a long future in the music industry.
