[Electronic] FLASHLIGHTS – New Hampshire

20111008-120446.jpg

Denver act FLASHLIGHTS put out the ‘Hidden Behind Trees’ EP all the way back in June, but we wanted to celebrate highlight track ‘New Hampshire’. Perfect for the dying autumn months, this glitchy and eerie slice of dream-pop shows off just how good FLASHLIGHTS are at creating soundscapes. ‘New Hampshire’ will leave you longing for more from this band.

Trio Home Covers are a rather elusive group, but their track ‘The Flame’ more than makes up for it. Part of the soundtrack to new film ‘Blinders’, ‘The Flame’ is short yet bittersweet ballad that showcases just what the band, led by Mike Howard, can do. A definite thumbs-up from us and we demand to hear more from this beguiling act.

French act Tahiti 80 have been around since the early 90s, and they’ve had a good deal of underground success with their particular brand of 60s-influenced surfpop. ‘Easy’ continues with this theme, and is an exhilarating tune that is bound to get live audiences on their feet within seconds. Davye Hawk, AKA Memory Tapes, teamed up with Modular Records’ Modcast to present ‘Slaughtered’, “a new record in the form of a mixtape instead of a single”. Comprised of 100% original material and clocking in at 23mins, this mixtape is a glitchy, synthy gem and deserves a spot on every electro fan’s mp3 player. Memory Tapes’ second album ‘Player Piano’ is out now.

[Indie] Feist – Pine Moon

Feist, one of our generation’s finest songwriters, has returned with new album ‘Metals’, and this bonus track, ‘Pine Moon’. A haunting piano ballad which gives Leslie Feist’s impassioned vocals room to soar; this track has a near-hypnotic power over the listener, which is only intensified by the low choral drone complementing the chords. One only has to listen to ‘Pine Moon’ once to realise just how special Feist really is.

[Indie] Peter & Kerry – Knees

Peter & Kerry are London singer-songwriters Peter Lyons and Kerry Leatham, both of whom have a small following of devoted fans. ‘Knees’ is one of the tracks on their collaboration, the ‘Clothes, Friends, Photos’ EP, released back in March. Darkly tender, ‘Knees’ captures the listener with its half-whispered lyrics and feather-light guitar. With talent like this, Peter & Kerry should be on every ‘Tips For 2012’ list.
