[Released] Rusko x Cypress Hill EP

As dubstep music continues to permeate mainstream culture there have been some interesting collaborative efforts in the works lately. Among the most promising is the new team of west coast allstars Cypress Hill and Rusko. Their debut 5 song EP finally dropped this week and it has a really coherent, fresh sound. Rusko’s grimy synth bass wobbles, sharp chord stabs and heavy half time drums perfectly compliment Cypress Hill’s stoner gangster rhymes.

The first 3 tracks on the album are strait ahead dubstep hip hop fire. Although there have been plenty of remixes and bootlegs pairing rappers with dubstep beats, this is one of the first legitimate collaborations between hip hop and dubstep cultures. “Lez Go”, “Roll It, Light It” and “Shots Go Off” are future hip hop at its best with an exciting, polished sound. “Can’t Keep Me Down” delves into reggae culture with a guest appearance from the legendary Damian Marley, further developing the sound. The only track that really doesn’t fit is the final track “Medicated” which sounds like a candy raver 90’s jam with hip hop over it.

Still, the overall sound of this collaboration is unique and exciting and the live show should be kick ass as you can see from the official video for “Lez Go” below.

If you’re into it you can pick up the full EP on iTunes here.

[Future Trill] Sexytime – Naked Poetry EP

Sexytime is one of the most original new collaborations in the vast realm of bass music. When west coast savant Mimosa came together with Brooklyn producer Sleepyhead they knew they wanted to go for a whole new sound. Forgoing the typical aggressive, harsh synths of their counterparts these two decided to take the high road with this one. In a very nice experimental, chilled out take on “sexy bass music”, Sexytime has created a unique statement with their debut Naked Poetry EP. The new sound these guys are pioneering simultaneously chills out the brain while moving the feet into a frenzy. You can listen to their album below or pick it up on iTunes here.

Tracks such as “Sour Grapes” and “You Can’t Hide” are great examples of the new juke or “trill” style most commonly heard in their live show. Their NYC show at underground artsy club W.I.P. (Work In Progress) was filled with high energy tracks like these and packed with beautiful people on all sides. All the while Sexytime kept their swagger gangster on the decks, head bobbing and setting the party on fire. Be sure to keep up with this talented duo to catch their live show because it is not to be missed! You can get a taste for their style with the video for “Lost In Translation” below as premiered on Jay-Z’s Life + Times site. Keep it sexy!

[Drum & Bass] DC Breaks – Firez EP

London based Drum & Bass duo DC Breaks are set to release their sophomore EP on RAM Records, home of current bass champs Sub Focus and Delta Heavy. The 4 track EP is titled “Firez” and it moves through all aspects of the genre with precision. The title track utilizes infectious synth hooks and melodies to rise above. “Era” goes a bit darker with growling bass lines and the end of the human race. “Move Closer” twists up the epic vocals by Belle Humble into a swell of energetic movement and “Shaken” finishes you off with crystal clear breaks in the intro and supremely heavy synths at the drop. These guys definitely have a knack for all things DnB. You can pick up the album from the RAM Records site here and enjoy the preview!

[Nu Disco] Arcade Fire – Sprawl II (Soulwax Remix)

It’s been far too long since Belgium’s live electro rock outfit Soulwax has laid their remixing chops upon some worthy material, but they truly outdid themselves this time with a remix of “Sprawl II” by Canadian folk rockers The Arcade Fire. The pulsing disco rhythms cruise along at a leisurely 105 BPM while lead vocalist RĂ©gine Chassagne soars high above and melodic arpeggios tie the mix together. If that wasn’t enough there is even a cowbell heavy hand clapping breakdown! Soulwax has earned their place in the upper echelon of live electronic acts with their unique sound and remixes like this one only solidify their reputation as some of the best in the business.
