The Score – Catching Fire [TMN PREMIERE]

The Score Official
Catching Fire

Every once in a while, an act comes around that embodies the Americana-rich daydreams we often fixate on while focusing on the warmer months. You know the ones – you’re camping with friends, cooking s’mores, drinking whiskey, and listening to music blaring out of your friend’s car. While that friend’s car battery will surely die, those memories will live on in infamy, and The Score writes songs that are the perfect soundtrack for those memories.

Following their monster hit, “Oh My Love,” is no easy task. This tune amassed over two million plays on soundcloud and YouTube and can also be heard in Starbucks nationwide this month. However, “Catching Fire” doesn’t disappoint, instead adding to the general allure that’s radiating off of these guy’s catchy-as-hell vibes.

As we saw before, the LA-based duo has a knack for anthemic pop, artfully crafting easily memorable hooks paired with booming percussion and light, accentuating guitar work. It beckons on associations of other quickly-rising indie pop stars, reminding us of Young Rising Sons, The Griswolds, and CRUISR. All in all, it’s one of those tunes that you just can’t shake, not that you would ever want to.

Be on the lookout for more from these two. You’ll surely be hearing more of them in 2015.

[Resident Artist of the Month] Jack Garratt

Jack Garratt
Chemical

February came and went in a hurry, and we’re now looking forward to March, spring, summer, and, of course, all of the festivals that are heading our way. The first festival on our list is SXSW, and one of our must-see acts is inventive pop singer/producer Jack Garratt.

We’ve been fans of this magnificently-bearded, UK-based, self-producing musician for quite some time, quickly becoming enamoured at first listen. Back then, we stumbled across “I Couldn’t Want You Anyway,” and haven’t turned back since.

With this lasting adoration and panicky “we have to post his new song within minutes of it being live” urges, we felt it necessary to extend him an offer to be our Resident Artist for the month of March. He has, of course, accepted, and we couldn’t be happier.

So, stay tuned as we bring you four different pieces of content on this quickly rising artist, including an exclusive interview coming up soon.

2015 International Women’s Day Playlist

In honor of International Women’s Day, we’ve spent the afternoon compiling tunes from some of our favorite musical women. We looked into all of our usual genres – indie rock, hip hop, RnB, pop – and did our best to shine some light on the industry’s best and brightest.

The lines blur from genre to genre at times, and the definition of a “female musician” does as well. Some bands have male members. Some women are covering a song from a male artist. At the end of the day though, we tried our best to showcase acts that have a heavy female influence in their art.

So, sit back, relax, and take some time to appreciate some of the best work from women musicians around the globe.

October Glow – Cellar Door [TMN PREMIERE]

October Glow
Cellar Door

Sunday is a bittersweet day. On one hand, it’s developed a notariety for being the a day of rest, allowing you to slowly wind down before another week in the rat race. On the other hand, it is the last day of the weekend, presenting itself as a daunting reminder that real life kicks back into gear before you know it.

Regardless of whether you’re a “glass half full,” or “glass half empty” person, one thing should be a constant. Music plays a huge role in shaping our lazy day at home, and October Glow is adding to that with their debut song, “Cellar Door.”

Accentuating the laid-back vibes of this day properly, this Essex-based producer/vocalist brings the tune in with a South East Asian riff. Calling on associations of Apparat, Absofacto, and Tom Vek, “Cellar Door” crackles with anti-pop radiance. The understated vocals effortlessly blend with the instrumentals, leaving us yearning for more. Unfortunately, this is all we have for now. You’ll just have to exert some patience as we wait for more.

“Cellar Door” is now available to download via Sweet Release Records. Head over there, pick it up, and enjoy the rest of your Sunday.

7 Acts We Loved At Noise Pop Festival 2015–SF, 2/20-3/1 [Festival Review + Playlist]

Flight Facilities-16Now in its 23rd year, Noise Pop Festival has become an absolute staple of the Bay Area for fans of independent music, film and art. With multiple shows every night at some of the best venues SF and Oakland have to offer, Noise Pop presented the best kind of difficult decisions on a daily basis. The Noise Pop HQ, at the newly renovated Swedish American Hall, was a fantastic destination as well hosting intimate shows, happy hours and even a live podcast recording with Toro y Moi where he premiered “Half Dome,” the eighth track from his upcoming album. Although there were plenty of activities outside of the concerts, being the ninjas we are, we’re going to focus on our favorite performances from the week. Browse through some pictures and songs in our chronologically ordered list below.

1. Flight Facilities, 2.24 @ The Regency Ballroom

Why we loved it: Australian DJ duo Flight Facilities, of the esteemed Future Classic, took stage at The Regency in full aviation gear for an energetic set. What really took their performance to the next level was live vocal assistance from talented Owl Eyes and Surahn Sidhu, member of Empire of the Sun, who covered female and male parts of Flight Facilities’ countless hits. FYFE – Polythene Love [TMN PREMIERE]

FYFE
Polythene Love

All week long, FYFE has been generously sharing new material in preparation for his upcoming album, Control. Today however, we have the esteemed pleasure of sharing perhaps our favorite of the new releases, “Polythene Love.” If you’ve been following FYFE for as long as we have, the subject matter should come as no surprise to you, centering around the concept of disposable relationships; temporary connections or flings we engage in as a way to combat loneliness rather than pursuing something more meaningful.

Upon first listen, “Polythene Love” is easily one of the most vibrant and unique tracks on the project. Assisted by an uncredited female vocalist who goes by Mai, the pair navigate their way through an intricate mesh of striking synths and bubbling guitar riffs. Meanwhile, Fyfe unsuccessfully tries to court the young woman, leaving him asking the crucial question, “Is this ‘Polythene Love’ again?” We were curious about the inspiration behind this new tune, so we asked the Londoner himself to provide a little insight of his own on the number:

School disco cringe played out in the adult world. A playful observation of the relentless and the often not just acknowledged, but celebrated pursuit of flimsy, throw-away or plastic (polythene) ‘love’. I find it amusing, visualising my own school disco experiences of boys lined up one side and girls the other and overlaying it onto memories of university nights out, but wondering how well aligned the two might be if those in the latter scene were not completely wasted.

It’s hard to believe it’s been 2 years since we first discovered FYFE, which makes this project long overdue. The wait will finally come to an end on Tuesday, when Control finally hits shelves, however you still have time to order yourself a copy before March 9th through either iTunes or Rough Trade.
