Hold On ft. Amber Coffman

Another month means a new Resident Artist here at Music Ninja.
I’m going to use one of my favorite quotes to describe this artist.

Those who dance are considered insane by those who cannot hear the music.
― George Carlin

The first time I saw this artist perform, I was immediately captivated by his stage presence, he never stopped moving, not even when he drank his water or mixed his beats. He constantly covered the stage with his addicting dance style and I couldn’t help but smile the whole night listening to the crazy beats of this artist while watching him dance insanely to the music he loves to make.

The artist is the Leeds born DJ/Producer Rusko who ascended with the original U.K. dubstep movement. Rusko gave dubstep one of its first and most enduring anthems, a bolt of foul-mouthed rave lightening called “Cockney Thug”. From there, Rusko continued take the dubstep world by storm with evangelizing bass “wobble” that has since set the music world ablaze. Rusko has released a slew of singles, remixes and EPs and in 2010 his song “Cali Anthem” became the first dubstep tune to be listed on the US radio. And as any good artist will do, Rusko took some time off a few years back to travel and get inspired for his second album “SONGS”. Today, Rusko continues to make a unique dubstep sound that he likes to say is happy sounding dubstep:

The sound of my early releases was very dub-influenced, and just good, fun, bouncy vibes,” he says. “The majority of dubstep at the moment I think is aggressive, and I don’t like angry music; I don’t want to be angry in a club. So I wanted to make something really happy, but still heavy.

He currently is about to start his fall US “Lift Me Up” tour, one that is not to be missed.

It is no surprise this artist continues to acquire more and more fans, his music speaks not just to the head but to the heart as well, not to mention what his music does to the desire to dance. So this month will be one full of fun, dance and everything Rusko.

[TMN Interview] Adventure Club’s progression from Pop-Punk highschoolers to Dubstep kings

AC
Adventure Club
Superheroes Anonymous Volume. 3

This past weekend, Red Rocks was taken over by Rowdytown. TMN has the chance to sit down with the Canadian boys of Adventure Club and learn more about their musical pasts, their love for macaroni and cheese, and why you will always find them wearing bunnyhugs.

TMN: This evening I have the pleasure of sitting down with Christian and Leighton, the duo who we all know as Adventure Club. Guys thank you so much for taking the time to sit down with us at Rowdytown.

AC: Bonjour Music Ninja, c’est bien?

TMN: First I have to say, welcome back to Red Rocks, how many times is this playing here for you now? What are a few things you love about playing at this incredible outdoor venue?

C: This is our second time here. The first time we played here was during the day and today the sunset and the light projection on the rocks is such an unbelievable experience.

L: You get to see everyone with their glow sticks up in the air

C: (Laughs) Even if they are throwing them at you!

L: With really big drops you would see all these glow sticks just go flying in the air is was incredible.

C: I can’t get over the projection on the rocks.

L: And we got to play with our favorite Big Gigantic…well and of course Carnage and the boys.

TMN: I recently read another interview in which you said the show that surprised you the most was your show in Boulder, Colorado about two years ago when you two were just starting out (I was there side note, it was an amazing show). Was that one of those ah-ha moments in which you realized this could all get huge? That Adventure Club might have the chance of becoming something big?

C: We hadn’t been playing for too long and we weren’t too experienced with a live set yet. So we figured the music we were playing was the music we knew and no one else knew. We came into Colorado and played more than one show and everyone knew our songs.

L: And they knew our songs, like our original songs which was a huge shocker. We were shocked and impressed. I give a lot of that credit to Nick from This Song is Sick for spreading our shit around Colorado he’s been a big help with that.

Free n Losh – A World Within EP + Exclusive Interview

free

Like the colorful imagination of a young child, Free N Losh are uninhibited by any societal musical expectations or norms. Allowing their creativity to shine through, these two have created a daydreamers’ fantasy, illustrating what a lot of us hear as we’re careening through the thoughts that make us warm ‘n fuzzy.

This latest EP is even more imaginative and dreamlike than anything we’ve heard from them previously. Of course you’re already familiar with “What We’ll See,” from our earlier post on it. And while it has some chillstep inspired smooth rolling basslines, in “The World Within,” we’re offered up something quite different. This tune, heavily rooted in classic jazz, focused highly on the combination of different instrumental sampling. Despite the fluttering synths layered into it, you can actually still picture listening to this in a darkened jazz club. You quickly forget that you’re listening to a form of electronica.

“Spaceships vs Submarines” probably resembles what we’re used to in mainstream EDM, with lasers, carefully placed vocal samples and some trap style synths. However, the progression of the song is anything but, as it curves away from the big bass and into a drum and bass style breakdown. Finally we’re left with our personal favorite on the EP: “Open Your Eyes”.

I grew up on the Temptations. My mom always leaned away from rock and roll, and leaned towards soul, RnB and eventually disco. So, hearing this silky smooth interpretation really took me to another place. It’s so natural, undemanding and meticulously put together. This track is the epitome of how I see Free n Losh.

After sampling this EP on repeat, we reached out to ask some questions to this Toronto based duo. From the early days, to what’s in store next, check out what they had to say.

TMN: Hey guys, thanks so much for taking some time to sit down with us. First off, talk to us about how this project came to be. When did you two come together to form Free n Losh?

Free: We met up at university through mutual friends. I stopped by Losh’s room with my buddy who knew him and when I walked in I saw Big L and Pharcyde posters and we got to talking…

Losh: Free had been producing already for a couple years when we met and when I told him I always wanted to give it a shot, he encouraged me to try it out. So I did, and I got addicted to it. It all grew from there.
