This week’s show was mostly a mish-mash of various Soundcloud/Bandcamp finds across genres plus a few favorite cuts from TDE’s Black Panther OST. A few other projects highlighted in this episode include stellar new EPs from Ravyn Lenae, Mija & Geotheory alongside Keinemusik‘s eclectic self-titled album. Closing out the show was a selection of left-field house cuts ranging from funky to hazy lo-fi to ethereal electro.

This edition was about as eclectic as they come ranging from dreamy indie to tech house slappers. We’ve had some great guests and themed episodes recently, so I really wanted to highlight 5 new albums that I’ve had in heavy rotation for the last few weeks from the supremely laid back funk jam-band Khruangbin, Swedish indie outfit HOLY, weightless pop trio NADINE, LA disco rockers De Lux and emotional dance music extraordinaire Lane 8.

[Indie/Synth-Pop] Yoke Lore – Goodpain (Blondage Remix)

YOKE LORE
Goodpain (Blondage Remix)

Brooklyn based indie-pop auteur Adrian Galvin (formerly of Walk the Moon) spins lush webs of synth soaked pop music under the Yoke Lore moniker, and closed out 2017 with the release of an excellent EP: Goodpain. This past weekend, Yoke Lore’s Goodpain was buoyed by the release of an accompanying Goodpain Remixes sister-EP featuring indie mainstays including Yeasayer, Chad Valley, Shy Girls and more; and we’ve been happily consuming it in the time since.

Standing tall among Yoke Lore’s impressive offering of remixes is Danish electro-pop duo Blondage‘s sparkling treatment of the EP’s title track “Goodpain”. Blondage unravels Lore’s original melody, infusing their revision with a healthy dose of soulful piano stabs, and a bent take on its hooky synth line. Instrumentally, the pair manage to simultaneously gloss up their version of the tune, while also painting flecks of a more minimal approach to pop music throughout. Be sure to check out the rest of Yoke Lore’s Goodpain Remixes EP, but until then stream Blondage’s remix of “Goodpain” above.

We had a very rare episode to close out 2017 featuring all my favorite tunes of the year and a special guest appearance from former co-host Ninja Dom, in town from London. I started this playlist with about 12 hours worth of music and ended up focusing on tracks from my favorite albums of the year. To round it all out, I mixed together 11 of my favorite 2017 house tracks. We have some even more comprehensive end of year lists from our staff coming to the website later this week so stay locked. Thanks to everyone and anyone who rocked with Music Ninja Radio in 2017! – Ash

Episode #96: Saturation & Soul

Soundcloud || Spotify Playlist  || BFF.fm Archive & Tracklist

This week’s episode kicked off with a chilled out soul / jazz vibe that carried through out, across genres. Although there were notable Friday releases from some veterans, Brockhampton‘s Saturation III was easily the project I was the most excited for. Their third album of the year delivered possibly their most ambitious and interesting yet. I matched its title by playing 4 tracks from Saturation III. The second half of the show delved into some jazzy, off-kilter house from Frits Wentink, Ben Hauke, Kerem Akdag, O’Flynn and more. I had to close out the show with a behemoth new Nicolas Jaar track from the deluxe edition of Sirens. – ash.

This week’s selection is inspired by the music that accompanied some recent travels. The show kicks off with some laid back, soulful vibes but quickly kicks up into hip-hop and future beats. The majority of the lineup, though, is comprised of some trippy, experimental house tracks that have been in heavy rotation. I also shouted out BFF.fm’s end of year fundraiser and an upcoming benefit show in SF where I’ll be DJing. – ash.

Butterjack – Good Girls [TMN VIDEO PREMIERE]

BUTTERJACK
GoodGirls

Thank god this track is coming your way close to the weekend. If I had been covering it prior to Thursday, I’m sure I’d be getting some angry tweets for unintended consequences from listening to this smooth-as-fucking-silk track from NW England-based Butterjack.

“Good Girls” has an undeniably catchy feel to it, with underlying R&B undertones coupled with sexy percussion and glowing synths. It’s one of those tunes you can’t help but nod along to, as it encourages you to head out for a wild night on the town. Don’t hold back. Give in. Let it take you for a ride.

The video for ‘Good Girls’ is special to me because all of the ideas for things like this feel like your babies. I saw this idea when we were thinking about videos and it was an idea that I took through all the stages and ended up with EXACTLY what I wanted. Emmie Bednall, who helped create the vision is an absolute animal. She totally understands the project and the evolution in the videos and having her on the team is priceless. I think videos are really important as it’s a chance to give the song another narrative, fresh ears through your eyes!

Aside from this funky fresh new tune to add to your collection, we also have a first look at the accompanying music video, which will surely be a treat to graphic novel and Archer fans around the globe. Have a look below:
