[Electronic/Experimental] Sampha – Slow Lights

Sampha
Slow Lights

Over the last few years, rising producer/singer Sampha has worked on projects with SBTRKT, Drake, and released a six-track solo EP, Dual, in 2013. Needless to say, fans are anxious to get their hands on his upcoming debut album. According to a new post from Sampha, it’s currently in the works, and he has a brand new track to share with the world.

His latest comes in the form of a new instrumental (emphasis on the -mental) track “Slow Lights.” Spacey synth arrangements fade in and out of one another as Sampha adds a heavenly vocal extension into the mix, resulting in a three-minute ride through psychedelic soundscapes and off the wall production. Check out the track above and be on the lookout for more music from Sampha in the near future.

[NEW] Jamie xx – Girl

Jamie xx
Girl

James Blake previewed this glorious track titled “Girl” by Jamie xx on his BBC Radio 1 Residency show last month. He made a mistake and called it “Bloke” by Simon Tallwhacker, but James corrects himself during Aprils mix (featured below). We took the rip from the previous mix because he talks all over the most recent one, but none the less this track should give you the chills. Featuring his classic style of dreamy vocal edits mixed with flawless drum work, this one should be on repeat for a while. Cheers.

[Video/Chill/House] Sebastian Carter – Stranger Sights (Feat. Henry Green)

Sebastian Carter
Stranger Sights (feat. Henry Green)

Sebastian Carter has graced the pages of TMN multiple times behind a smooth and emotive brand of house remixes, but this time the Swiss born producer is back and armed with a beautiful original record featuring an ethereal vocal contribution from budding UK troubadour Henry Green. “Stranger Sights” executes a succinct hi-hat shuffle plucked right out of NYC’s Paradise Garage brand of late 80’s dance music; but rather than a jacking house vibe at its core, there lies a very seductive and melodic heartbeat to the tune. Henry Green, whose vocals we had never heard before, casts an even more soothing aesthetic onto “Stranger Sights” with his reverb treated crooning, and behind those beautifully coalescing elements, this one quickly took the place as our favorite Sebastian Carter tune. As an added bonus, the visually stimulating music video plays just as well as the track does aurally. The pair teamed up with rising photographer/videographer Jack Toohey, who had this to day about the project: “I was inspired by the mysterious quality of the song, I immediately pictured aimless wandering on a cold night. Picking up on lyrics like ‘retrace my steps, ‘wasting time’… That feeling of being out dancing until 3am – every things a bit of a blur – dangerous thoughts like ‘in the hope  that i’ll be yours again’ start slipping back into your mind. I guess it’s just trying to capture that feeling and that mystique of the hours before dawn.”  We think both the song and video nailed it. Stream “Stranger Sights” above (which you can download for free on his Soundcloud), and check out the official music video after the jump.

[Indie] RBTS WIN – Death Magic

RBTS WIN
Death Magic

Up-and-comer duo RBTS WIN tease us with upcoming summer vibes in “Death Magic,” a sneak preview into their album Palm Sunday. Semblant to Painted Palms and the laid-back Vacationer sound (give the song “Trip” a go), this track sets a sultry pace in an easy 20 seconds. It’s got that balanced combo of psychedelia and pop that really exhales that sunny vibrancy.

Soak it all up. The easy cadence will transport you instantly to a beachside boardwalk, midsummer or to a sunlit, sun-basking easy mountain hike. The hazy, warm nostalgia meanders gently and brings you some of their native warmth from Miami Beach all the way up to their current outpost in Asheville, NC.

As the weather’s finally waking everyone up from hibernation, let this track welcome all things warm and laid-back to come. We’re stoked to let this one roll on repeat and wait as patiently as possible for the full album to ease its way out.

[Experimental/Indie] Pattern Is Movement – River

Philadelphia duo Pattern Is Movement have made their self-titled new album available for streaming a week before its scheduled release.

Their first record in six years, Pattern Is Movement masterminds Christopher Ward and Andrew Thiboldeaux have cited influences on this album ranging everywhere from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood to Werner Herzog. An odd combination of influences, but one that is evident in the duo’s music.

Pattern Is Movement’s sound contains a wild mix of meticulous melodies and distinct dialects. When I listen to this new record, I hear a vocal resemblance to indie-pop dreamers Local Natives, mixed with the experimental noise pop of Dirty Projectors. The unison, soul-infused vocal patterns wash delicately over a foundation of feverish synth and pulsing percussion.

Pattern Is Movement is out April 1 via Hometapes. You can listen to the album in its entirety here.

[ULTRA 2014 Schedule Recommendation] TMN’s Must See Guide to Ultra (Miami 3/28 – 3/30)

1239423_10152109764737739_1828179057_n

Ahh. The time is finally here. All winter long we’ve been angrily looking at the calendar, not-so-patiently awaiting the start of festival season here in the states. To kick things off in 2014, we’re obviously overwhelmingly excited for what Ultra 2014 is bringing to the table.

As you would guess, this year’s line up is stacked, as usual. There’s a veritable pantheon of EDM legends, coupled with some amazing up and coming artists as well. We traditionally like to do a full stream of everyone that’s going to be there, but this year we’re going to change it up. Instead of giving you a tiny sample of each artist who’s playing, we’re going to give you our recommendations, day by day.

Scheduling is going to be tricky, so make sure you set out a proper game plan. It might be hard to stick to after a few beverages, but take it from us – don’t miss out on seeing your favorite artist, or any of these suggestions below:

Friday March 28th

Chainsmokers – Stage 7

Picked by Bryn Carter & Clayton Warwick

TMN Staff Comment: Two handsome devils reigning from New York who can make ANY song the ultimate remix. Make sure to check out these two who will keep your feet moving and your mind spinning with their intense indie/electronic melodies.

’The Wanted – We Own The Night(The Chainsmokers Remix)’
’The Chainsmokers vs. Tove Lo – Habits’
’#SELFIE’

M.I.A. – Live Stage

Picked by Eric Gossett

mia300-790e9b19a08dbe8b6be20c05655262c4260e563f-s6-c30
TMN Staff Comment: The ever-controversial M.I.A. is definitely a “don’t miss” performance at this year’s Ultra Music Festival. The singer just released her critically-acclaimed album Matangi last year and is currently being sued by the NFL for $15 million for her performance at the Super Bowl. So if that was what they (couldn’t) show at the Super Bowl, I can only imagine how wild her uncensored stage show must be.

’BRING THE NOIZE’
’M.I.A. – Bad Girls’
’27’

Friday March 28th

12TH Planet – UMF Radio Stage

Picked by Clayton Warwick

12thplanet

TMN Staff Comment: Last year, I had the pleasure of introducing someone to trap, and did so by watching 12th Planet’s set on Sunday afternoon. This well respected, LA based producer will be throwing down a massive set full of filthy beats. If you want to get down and dirty, don’t miss this set.

’Pretty Lights
Go Down Sunshine (12th Planet Remix)’
’Smoked Out’
’12th Planet & Protohype
“Paper” on @smogrecords’

Friday March 28th

Kill The Noise – UMF Radio Stage

Picked by Michael Serratore

Kill-The-Noise-Kill-Kill-Kill-EP

TMN Staff Comment: There are plenty of players in the world of filthy bass, but no one does it quite like KTN. There’s an undeniable energy in everything he does, and that will only be taken to the next level amongst a crowd of frenzied fans

’Thumbs Up (For Rock N’ Roll) with Feed Me’
’DUCKSAUCE – NRG (Skrillex, Kill The Noise, Milo & Otis RMX)’
’Kill The Noise & Dillion Francis – Dill The Noise’

Friday March 28th

Chance the Rapper – Live Stage

Picked by Baseer Ahmad and Clayton Warwick

Chance-the-Rapper

TMN Staff Comment: You say you’re going to Ultra to only listen to beats? Don’t limit yourself. A break in the bass will be welcomed, and who better to give you said break than Chi-Town native, Chance the Rapper?

’Childish Gambino: They Dont Like Me (ft. Chance the Rapper)’
’Lil Wayne – You Song Ft Chance The Rapper (Dedication 5)’
’Chance The Rapper – Brain Cells Live (5day)’

Friday March 28th

The Glitch Mob – Worldwide Stage

Picked by Rachel Haroldson

Glitch-Mob-Love-Death-Immortality

TMN Staff Comment: This is a no brainer. Glitch Mob absolutely throws down with live performances, from the insane stage set-ups to the energy of the group, you can just see that these guys have a passion for performing and love giving the audience an unforgettable show.

’Nalepa – Monday (The Glitch Mob Remix)’
’A Dream Within a Dream – DRINK THE SEA’
’The Glitch Mob – We Can Make The World Stop’

[Experimental/Pop] tUnE-yArDs – Water Fountain

With their third album, Nikki Nack, set to drop May 6, tUnE-yArDs have shared “Water Fountain,” the first full track from the album. The brainchild of Merrill Garbus, tUnE-yArDs follow their critically-acclaimed sophomore effort w h o k i l l with their latest release.

“Water Fountain” is a perfect mess of organized chaos that only tUnE-yArDs could bring. Mixing elements of Afro-pop, folk, funk and everything in between, tUnE-yArDs somehow manage to turn their clamoring combination of anarchic audio into a smooth shower of pleasing pandemonium. While receiving a heavier studio treatment than tUnE-yArDs previous songs, “Water Fountain” is filled with classic clanking, foot-stomping beats, and “HEY HA” chanting that makes tUnE-yArDs so much fun to listen to.

Unlike most public water fountains, this one will have you coming back for multiple refills.

tUnE-yArDs Nikki Nack is out May 6 via 4AD.
