The Dø

Two years after its European release, the debut album from French/Finnish duo The Dø (pronounced “dough”) is finally seeing stateside distribution. The chamber pop group’s cautious desire to maintain total control of the project, even when it meant holding back, is largely responsible for the delay. The music itself, however, with its delightful mix of playfulness, Finnish and English lyricism, gorgeous harmonies, and some eye-popping high notes, proves itself to be well worth the wait. The album’s first track, “Playgroud Hustle,” provides a exciting example, showcasing nearly all of these elements. A fife and martial drumbeat keep time in the background as you’re transported to Neverland, where kids know how to never grow up and adults had better watch out.
