Moving Castle Interviews [TMN RESIDENCY]

As we close out our month of Moving Castle, we wanted to take a moment to get to know a few of their members. This should come as no surprise to you, as we always include an interview with our Residency program. However, this particular one required a little change of pace.

It would have been mayhem to write and execute a half dozen individual set of questions, so, we sent out a Google form with a standard set of questions. Some cover their artistry, some are just downright silly.

Sit back, grab a cup of coffee, and spend some time learning about a handful of quickly rising artists.

TMN: Talk to us about how you got into music. Was in encouraged by your family growing up, or did you get into later in life?

I’ve always been into music but my first experiences were when I got a keyboard for Christmas when I was 10. Then I got into Linkin Park in elementary school, followed it into a metal band, and then when that ended me and Nabhanyu formed HYDRABADD. Then production and DJing became my focus and I’ve been at it ever since.

TMN: What was your first live performance like?

My first live performance was playing guitar in middle school with a cover band at a bar/restaurant doing Green Day songs and Sweet Child O’ Mine lol. I did the solos, it was tight.

TMN: Tell us about one moment in your musical career that has made you say “Holy shit! I can’t believe that just happened.”

There’s been so so so so so so many but most recently diplo liking my snoop/pharrell remix was crazy. It’s still unbelievable to me that people of that caliber are finding things that I’m making at home.

The most memorable was being selected as one of 25 ppl in the southeast to participate in RBMA’s Basscamp program at Bonnaroo. They had studios on site and lectures from people like Mannie Fresh and Thundercat, it was unbelievable spending personal time with them and also working with all the other participants.

TMN: How long have you been a part of Moving Castle?

Since Volume 3, Porsche Sunset was my first contribution

TMN: What are your plans for 2015? Releases? Touring? Getting caught up on Game of Thrones?

I’ve been making a whoooooole lot of music so I’m just figuring out how to unleash it all. The Moving Castle mix I just did was half unreleased songs from me, so I’m just strategizing at this point how to put them together into releases. Definitely keeping up with Game of Thrones though too haha.

TMN: Can you tell us your favorite Moving Castle member? Or is that like a parent choosing a favorite child?

Obviously I like all of them for different reasons. I’ve known the Ba-kuura boiz the longest, but musically i’ve been feeling Robokid, Kappa Kavi and Chet Porter a lot lately.

TMN: If Moving Castle wasn’t a music collective, it would probably be…

This is a hard one cause everyone’s really different, but we’d all be artists of some sort I’m sure. Me personally – if I wasn’t into music I’d probably start playing a lot more video games lol.

TMN: If Moving Castle had an animal mascot, what would it be?

Probably Tigers, cause they’re savage.

TMN: If you guys were all featured in a TV show, who would play you?

Patton Oswalt, just cause everyone says i look like him.

VICES

TMN: Talk to us about how you got into music. Was in encouraged by your family growing up, or did you get into later in life?

Both of us have always been into music. We were both in a number of bands before we began producing, moved to hip hop and rap beats, then onto trap and dance music. Music is just something that’s always been something that feels natural for us. We’ve both also been lucky to have very supportive parents.

TMN: What was your first live performance like?

To be completely honest, I can’t remember the first Vices performance….so I’d say it was a success. Lol

TMN: Tell us about one moment in your musical career that has made you say “Holy shit! I can’t believe that just happened.”

Vices started as a side project. Both of us had separate projects here in Orlando and began making jersey club on the side as just another creative outlet. For whatever reason we decided to just put out a remix that we had done, and the very next day DJ Sliink re-posted the song to his soundcloud page and tweeted about. Lol. I remember us both waking up to the notifications saying something along the lines of “holy shit, i can’t believe that just happened” lol

TMN: What are your plans for 2015? Releases? Touring? Getting caught up on Game of Thrones?

’Moving Castle SXSW Day Party Guest Mix: Robokid’

TMN: Talk to us about how you got into music. Was in encouraged by your family growing up, or did you get into later in life?

I was encouraged by my parents when i was young to play piano and do band in grade school.. I hated it, but its funny how the tables turned when I left for college and all i wanted to do was focus on music while my parents were against it and wanted me to pursue a more traditional route.. Now they support my music 100% but i’ve been a musician pretty much all my life.

TMN: What was your first live performance like?

really fun but i barely knew what i was doing… im not even going to reveal what i played on

TMN: Tell us about one moment in your musical career that has made you say “Holy shit! I can’t believe that just happened.”

Probably when we played at SXSW this spring and there were so many people there we had to evacuate the venue during Porter Robinson’s surprise set because the fire marshall came. It was definitely a “Holy shit!” moment.

TMN: Can you tell us your favorite Moving Castle member? Or is that like a parent choosing a favorite child?

This is a really tough question to answer but I would have to say that Ba-kuura has constantly been upping their game since i first stumbled upon their soundcloud and they’ve always been making some of my favorite forward thinking music.
