[Hip-Hop] Lloyd Banks – Gettin By (ft. ScHoolboy Q)

Yesterday, G-Unit’s Lloyd Banks released his latest mixtape, V6: The Gift. Banks is, in my opinion, one of the more underrated rappers out right now. His raspy, recognizable voice teamed with moments of lyrical brilliance make for some great ridin’ music. One of the most notable features on the tape comes from the young, talented and prolific ScHoolboy Q. His gritty lyricism continues to shine proving versatile over all sorts of production. On this cut, the Black Hippy member delivers his own brand of ignorance in signature style. [Hip-Hop] Childish Gambino – Sour Face (ft. Jay Rock)

On Gambino’s most recent project, ROYALTYwe saw him team up with two members of Black Hippy, Ab-Soul and ScHoolboy Q. On Sour Face, CG enlists the most senior member of the crew, Jay Rock, for a track to ride to. Jay Rock’s aggressive, gangster flow fits surprisingly well with Gambino’s approach and this is yet another demonstration of the growth of Donald, exhibiting versatility while maintaining his uniqueness. After hearing this, I am highly anticipating a collaboration with the fourth member of Black Hippy, Kendrick Lamar. My favorite line on this one references the talented and beautiful Alison Brie, who is one of Glover’s co-stars on Community. In the Bay Area, we would refer to this as a SLAP.

[Hip-Hop] Kendrick Lamar – Swimming Pools (Drank) (Prod. T-Minus)

Compton’s own Kendrick Lamar is easily one of the most promising young talents in hip-hop. His ability to express an extremely wide range of emotions and capture the human experience through his innovative style is truly incredible. On this track, Kendrick chooses the subject of alcohol and proceeds to dissect the topic discussing what he has witnessed in his community as well as his own experiences and mindset. T-Minus’s production provides the perfect atmosphere for the song, almost making you feel intoxicated just by listening. As usual, the Black Hippy finds ways to flip his flow through out to bring us a really powerful, multi-faceted and thought-provoking experience.
