Cut Copy – Lights and Music (Moullinex Remix)

I was first introduced to Cut Copy in the summer of 2008 at the Pitchfork Music Festival. They were scheduled to close out the fest on the B stage, opposite festival headliners Spoon, and my friend Louis insisted that I see the smaller of the acts. After waiting around for what seemed like an eternity, at which point we were entertained by some strainge improv courtesy of Brandon Cox (to be fair, he was only trying to help quell the unruly crowd), we learned that the group was delayed at the airport and would be there shortly. Finally, we saw them on stage frantically setting up, but with Chicago’s 10PM noise curfew, there was only enough time for them to play 4 songs. Fortunately, it was maybe the most rockin’ dance your ass off 4 song set I’d ever witnessed, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

There are lots of Cut Copy remixes out there, but in my mind, many of them fail just because the original songs are so well-loved that it’s hard to justify changing them in any way. Then I heard this remix by Moullinex (formerly known as Moulinex) that changed my mind. For me, a successful remix of a Cut Copy song would have to keep much of the original intact, especially the beat, and Moullinex has done just that. With a nice synth riff that carries throughout the song, the remix sounds like something fresh and new, all without changing the things we loved in the first place.
