40 Songs to Prepare for Sasquatch! 2016 [Festival Preview + Playlist]

Over the last few years, Memorial Day Weekend for us has become synonymous with Washington’s Sasquatch! Music Festival–you can take a look back at our review from last year to get a sense of just how much we love it. The 4-day event separates itself from other major festivals by offering a one-of-a-kind backdrop overlooking the Columbia River Gorge and being just far enough in the boonies that all attendees camp together. That combination makes for a more communal experience while offering some relief from common festival-goer complaints.

In its second year back to a 4-day bill, Sasquatch! presents one of its most unique lineups to date shedding light on local Seattle musicians early in the day while bringing the headliners everyone has come to expect (aside from The Cure!) to take on the evening performances. While late sets from the likes of Jamie xx, Disclosure and Major Lazer jump out as major electronic acts, the daytime seems more focused on indie rock / pop and hip-hop, which should fit a sunny day in the Gorge perfectly.

To help all our Sasquatch Ninjas prepare, we’ve put together a 40-song playlist highlighting 10 acts for each day of the festival. Whether or not you’ll be at the Gorge this year, we hope you discover some new artists in here–we certainly did in putting it together. If you do make it out, look for the dude with the most colorful shorts and come say what’s up!

Holding On (feat. Gregory Porter)

It’s been a while since Disclosure‘s groundbreaking album Settle dropped back in 2013. Even with the extended hiatus, during which they toured extensively and put out a few loose tracks, their relevance in dance music hasn’t receded one bit. Their tracks can be heard in DJ sets rocking dance floors around the world. Finally, though, fans have some new exciting news from the unstoppable UK duo–a new album set to drop later this year. The first single arrived a couple days ago and it’s the perfect continuation from their flawless debut. “Holding On” carries an incredible amount of soul courtesy Gregory Porter‘s vocals all the while maintaining the club-ready future house and garage sound that Disclosure has pioneered. As we await more news on their highly anticipated upcoming sophomore project, this one should do just fine in holding us over.

White Noise (Baiji Refix)

When a Disclosure tune gets remixed, eyes and ears are ready. That is doubly so when the only song on the producer’s Soundcloud is the remix. “White Noise” is the song that got refixed by the Taiwanese American producer Baiji, who’s either just starting out, or swiped his Soundcloud clean. Either way, his production skills are on point and this futuristic R&B jam is evidence of that. His chill downtempo work has already popped off with coverage from blogs, and hearts from fans everywhere, which is no surprise once you have a listen to the song. Baiji is just getting started, so his upcoming works are sure to be even doper than this one. We’re ready for what’s to come, are you? To help prepare, you can put this tune on replay after you download it for free.

[Chill] Disclosure – Boiling (Deuxième Remix)

Boiling (Deuxième Remix)

Sinead Harnett, whether you knew it or not, has lent her voice to some of the best electronic records in recent years. Her collaboration with Disclosure on one of Settle’s relatively ignored B-sides “Boiling” is widely treasured across the blogosphere as one of the album’s standout tracks. Her voice just melts into the UK duo’s production effortlessly and the marriage seems like it was built in heaven, until now. Enter Deuxième, a new player in the game from the suburban follies of Connecticut. With Rick Mitarotonda on guitar and Doug Bogan on keyboards/production, the two classically trained musicians give us a redone track that’s groovy, uplifting, melodic, and jazzy. Be on the look out for much more from these cool cats in the near future!

When a Fire Starts to Burn (C2C Remix)

Crafting a Disclosure remix that even comes close to doing the original justice is not an easy feat, although certainly not for a lack of attempts. French DJ crew, C2Chowever, have more than proven it is possible with their latest take on “When A Fire Starts To Burn.” The re-work kicks off with a glitchy opening that actually resembles some of the sounds used through out Disclosure’s work before unleashing some incredibly dope scratch work–serving as a friendly reminder that Djing is, in fact, an incredibly intricate art form. Hit play above and try not to dance. We dare you.

[NEW] Pharrell – Frontin’ (Disclosure Re-Work)

Pharrell ft. Jay Z (Disclosure Re-Work)

Long-time Pharrell fans undoubtedly feel a sense of nostalgia for his incredible work of the early and mid 2000s. Luckily, though, the legendary Virginia-bred producer continues to make amazing music and the breadth of his influence is strong in both hip-hop and EDM. Today, we get a special treat from UK EDM stars, Disclosurein the form of an incredible remix of Pharrell’s classic, Jay-Z featuring track, “Frontin.”

Disclosure’s funky electronic sound meshes perfectly with the instrumental creating an incredibly fun and bouncy summer anthem. It comes as no surprise that the two styles work so well together considering that the brothers of Disclosure have, on multiple occasions, mentioned Pharrell as a musical inspiration. Kick your weekend off right with this one and look out for a free download as the SC description suggests they’ll be giving it away once they reach 1 million likes on their Facebook page.

[House] Cyril Hahn & Javeon – Breaking

Cyril Hahn & Javeon
Breaking

Canadian house producer Cyril Hahn has had perhaps the most unassuming rise in comparison to any other producer over the past few years. What began as a college hobby of pumping out remixes for his friends,  soon turned into blogosphere wildfire when his smooth and pitched down deep remix of Destiny’s Child registered over a million plays within months. Since that spark, the entire indie world over from pop-enthusiasts, rock aficionados and of course dance gurus have seemed to take a bit of a shine to Hahn’s accessible and polished productions. Coming off of a debut EP Perfect Form back in October on tastemaking electronic imprint PMR, it looks like we’ve caught the young Canuck in the midst of a musical stride so to speak with his newest original collaboration with the talented and lovely Javeon, “Breaking”. The tune itself functions a little bit closer to synth-pop territory than usual for Hahn, who is clearly influenced by the Bristolian upstart. “Breaking” molds itself on top of a looming, 80’s leaning MIDI hook, and constant pumping bass line- and of course, it just wouldn’t be right to have Cyril Hahn’s name on this one unless there was a silky stellar vocal track there to pull its listener along.

“Breaking” will be available as part of  PMR Records (part of the brains behind finding Jessie Ware and Disclosure) debut sampler 20 Square Feet in Action which has yet to receive an official release date. Stream it above.
