[Event Review] Wild Nothing @ The Larimer Lounge – Denver, CO

Wild Nothing // "A Dancing Shell" (OFFICIAL SINGLE)

Living in the mountainous urban sprawl that is Denver affords some of the staff here at TMN the chance to see an amazing live show, on any given night of the week, at any number of sonically intoxicating venues throughout the Mile High City. On a blustery Tuesday night at perhaps the most intimate music room in the state, The Larimer Lounge, we had the fortuitous opportunity to revel in the anglophilic, shoegazey dream-pop that is Jack Tatum and his bedroom project turned critically acclaimed headlining act, Wild Nothing. A certain vivacity filled the small room and adjoining bar, radiating an energy that I hadn’t felt since seeing buzz-bands in the early 2000’s like The Futureheads, Okkervil River and Rogue Wave before the blogosphere world really took hold and so directly told us what was in or who is talented. The live music climate then was more focused on the reception surrounding a band’s newest EP, rather than a spread they recently did with “X” online publication of the month, and that era felt well represented. For both openers, the 20-something year-old dominated crowd would flock to the show floor as soon as any sort of live music began to erupt out of those dingy monitors – including the Larimer Lounge’s consistently give-and-take sound checks – leaving the smoking areas and bars almost barren and a blissfully jam-packed main room, which I am sure would have been a treat to perform for. Wild Nothing’s weekday performance contained one of the most musically unified crowds we had seen in some time, marking a totally refreshing return to concert attending. Continue reading

[Dream-Pop/Electronica] Vinyl Villain – Pretty Evil EP

Vinyl Villain, or V/V as they are largely tracked through the blogoshpheres, maintains as a project shrouded in much mystery, leaving only a catchy, but haunting brand of electronic leaning dream-pop to speak for them. When their latest collection of tunes, dubbed Pretty Evil, graced our in-house monitors there was a collective air of beauty suddenly infused into our souls, while a shot of reverb tinged vocals and minimal-pop slunked its way down our gullets simultaneously. V/V manage to pull from their listeners a smorgasbord of emotions while coming across as equal parts Lana Del Ray, Deerhoof and pure pop prowess. As their first body of work, Pretty Evil no doubt will latch onto many indie purists and more blogs alike while lifting their veil to a slew of music publications as well. As an even greater treat to our Ninjas, Pretty Evil was released as a free download, so please don’t miss your chance to be one of the first to sport it on your iPhone.

[Synth-Wave/Pop] Psychic Twin – Unlock Yr Heart

Psychic Twin
Unlock Yr Heart

If you happen to maintain as one of the fortunate people “in the know” about the extremely listenable psych-pop/synth-wave duo Psychic Twin, then we commend your taste and cutting edge eye for up and coming talent. On top of that, if you have been following the New York via Chicago band, specifically front-woman Erin Fein on Facebook, then a few weeks ago you may have received the message asking if we the fans would be interested in a new track. Well, after previous singles “Strangers”, “Dream State” and “Are You Gonna Get Her”, self-released mostly through Bandcamp and via exclusive 7″ vinyl pressings, we were salivating like one of Pavlov’s pitbulls for any sort of new material from the uber-talented pair and our answer was an emphatic “Yes!!!!!”.  Finally after a slight wait, “Unlock Yr Heart”, Psychic Twin’s newest single was unearthed through an obscure (to us Americans) German source, and lucky for you, it has landed right here in our Ninja laps. The track begins with pretty synth waves and a bass line a la Visions era Claire Boucher, while being bolstered by Fein’s airy, but penetrating vocals. The track rounds out with a pop sensibility that appeals to so many walks of life, signaling an end to Psychic Twin’s air of underground-ness most likeyl. Enough gushing already, just listen to “Unlock Yr Heart” above, and dig into Psychic Twin’s back catalogue if you have the chance, as they will no doubt begin to surface on many a music publication’s radar in the coming year.

[Fresh] Beach House – Norway

beach-house

Beach House is an American duo from Baltimore, Maryland. Their self-titled debut, Beach House, was named the 16th best album of 2006 by Pitchfork Media. The group have released two albums: 2006’s “Beach House” and 2008’s “Devotion”. A third, “Teen Dream”, will be released in early 2010 and we received a small preview of their album with a track titled “Norway”.

Their music can be described as dream pop and “Norway” is a perfect example to showcase their style. Soothing sounds with relaxing melodies. Extended soft vocals to carry your mind to a higher, much lighter place.
