[Hip-Hop] Earl Sweatshirt – Whoa (Feat. Tyler, The Creator)

Earl Sweatshirt
Whoa (Feat. Tyler, The Creator)

After dropping the much heralded “Chum” a few months ago, fans have been clamoring for Earl Sweatshirt‘s next release. For many, “Chum” seemed like a maturation in the young emcee’s thought process, as he tackled personal issues and struggles head on. Earl and crew are out to prove nothing’s changed though by dropping this brand new video for “Whoa.” As Tyler, The Creator alludes to in the beginning of the song, they’re out to revive their 2010 vibe, when people were first shocked by the video for “Earl.” This one isn’t quite as extreme, but it’s certainly peculiar.

It begins with Earl waking up in a run down trailer, and then donning a winter coat in nothing but his boxers, before heading outside to watch some 50-some year-old woman pirouetting around in a tutu. Yeah, it’s weird, but nothing out of the ordinary for Odd Future standards. “Whoa” comes with the trademarked laidback, yet sinister sound we’re used to from all Odd Future tracks. Earl shows off that sweet, complex rhyme scheme we’ve come to admire from him, while Tyler takes duties on the chorus. Earl’s upcoming album, Doris, doesn’t have a release date yet, but it’s easily one of the most anticipated projects of the year.

[Hip-Hop] Earl Sweatshirt – Chum (Video)

Early last month we brought you Earl Sweatshirt‘s latest single, “Chum,” an introspective song that displayed the flourishing young emcee’s masterful wordplay and maturity on the mic. Today, Earl dropped the brand new video for the track as well as the name of his next new project, Doris. Although, the song is titled “Chum,” there’s nothing chummy about Earl’s cadence or demeanor, as he maintains a relatively blank stare through the entirety of the video, highlighting Earl’s feelings of isolation and detachment from the world. The somber, black and white video adds a whole different dimension to the song itself, further cementing Earl as one of this generation’s brightest young stars.

[Hip-Hop] Earl Sweatshirt – Chum

Ever since his debut mixtape, EARL, and subsequent disappearance, the blogosphere has been eagerly anticipating some new music from Odd Future‘s Earl Sweatshirt. The talented eighteen year old LA-based emcee has re-emerged in the last half year or so with some quality features. Today, Earl blesses us with some new solo music and it most certainly does not disappoint.

Unafraid to confront his issues and insecurities, the protege spits with his apathetic and mischievous flow speaking completely candidly about his personal struggles and demonstrating maturity far beyond his years. The simple piano loop provides the perfect backdrop for this introspective and creative display of dark lyricism. Check out the long-awaited “Chum” below, a true testament to Earl’s potential as an artist.

[Hip-Hop] Domo Gensis – Elimination Chamber ft. Earl Sweatshirt, Vince Staples & Action Bronson (Prod. The Alchemist)

Fresh off the announcing their No Idols mixtape, Domo Genesis & The Alchemist drop this verbal assault. The smooth & eerie beat allow the Odd Future natives and company to use an original chopped eccentric flow, in line with the “no idols” theme. Surprisingly enough, Earl does not provide the most impressive verse. Rather, Vince Staples delivers some standout bars with, “I live to die, better that than live a lie.” An awesome collaboration and definitely a project to look out for. (Written by Carlos F.)
