[Album Review] Eminem – The Marshall Mathers LP 2

’Eminem – Love Game (Feat. Kendrick Lamar)”
’Eminem – Bad Guy’
’Eminem – Headlights (Feat. Nate Ruess)’

In the entertainment world, the mention of a sequel to an original work that was borderline perfect is usually a polarizing experience. When you first hear it, you are excited because the original story was so great but you are also nervous because the follow-up could just ruin the first. Unfortunately, most of the time, sequels fall into the latter and are never anywhere close to the quality of the original. Such can also be said for Eminem‘s 10th studio album The Marshall Mathers LP 2.

When you mention some of the greats in hip-hop, Eminem should be one of the first names out of your mouth. For 17 years, the Detroit emcee has changed the game by breaking through multiple barriers of the corny white rapper (Marky Mark, Vanilla Ice, etc.) and delivering a raw flow that is as equally controversial as it is dope and cynical. The one thing that separated Em from his counterparts was that he had no shame on the mic; no pop-culture icon nor topic was really off limits for his comedic and aggressive rhymes. From detailing  his dark upbringing in an abusive home to his battles with addiction and later his recovery, Marshall Mathers’ trauma has fueled some awesome music. Now at 41, he drops a sequel to his iconic third album The Marshall Mathers LP that attempts to continues his story and sets out to trump the mediocrity of his last few albums.

[NEW] Eminem – Rap God

Eminem
Rap God

Since Eminem announced that his upcoming album would be a sequel of his 2000 classic Marshall Matters LP, it has quickly become one of the most talked about projects among hip-hop fans. A few weeks back, we got a first glimpse with the rock-infused single “Berzerk,” which received a mostly positive response.

Today, the legendary Detroit emcee drops off another high-energy track, titled “Rap God.”  This time around, the production seems to draw more from EDM with a heavy beat and some unconventional flows from Em. Based on the two songs we’ve heard thus far, it’s hard to get a clear idea of how this album will come together. Stream above and let us know what you think in the comment section.

[LIST] Hip-Hop Cash Kings: The Richest Rappers

Forbes recently released a list of 2012’s hip-hop “Cash Kings,” ranking the rap world’s top earners. Snagging the #1 spot was Dr. Dre, who wrangled up a whopping $110 million — half of which can be attributed to his Beats by Dre headphone brand. The West Coast producer and emcee was joined by #2 Diddy (buoyed by his Ciroc vodka), #3 Jay-Z (his money raked in from number of places, like the Brooklyn Nets) and #4 Kanye (reaping much of the benefits from Watch The Throne). Eminem, who hasn’t exactly been a popular face for corporate endorsements and sponsorships, still placed at #9, bolstered by his music, selling more albums in the last 10 years than any artist. What are your thoughts, ninjas?

1. Dr. Dre – $110 million
2. Diddy – $45 million
3. Jay-Z – $38 million
4. Kanye West – $35 million

[Hip-Hop] Slaughterhouse -Throw That (ft. Eminem)

It’s getting closer to the album release time and Shady Records rap group Slaughterhouse (Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, Royce da 5’9″, and Crooked I) teamed up with Eminem to drop another leak for the fans. Now it is apparent in the rap game that when many artists go mainstream they decide to have at least one “romantic” sexy track and “Throw That” is that single for their upcoming album. With lines like, “She strips to get tips, those lips and those child bearing hips, I’ll throw this dick on you girl,” this game is as close to romance as a girl can expect from the legendary lyricists. Mixing a heavy bass T-Minus produced beat with some funny and dope lyrics, they made a certified banger that satisfies both twerkers and rap lovers alike.

You can cop this cut over at iTunes, as well as their upcoming album Welcome to: OUR HOUSE, which drops August 28th.

[Hip-Hop] Slaughterhouse – Goodbye ft. Skylar Grey (Prod. Boi-1da)

With an all-star line up including Royce Da 5’9″, Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, and Crooked I, Slaughterhouse is bringing its A-game once again. The Shady Records supergroup goes in over a hard-hitting piano with a melodic chorus by the beautiful Skylar Grey. Talking about their own experiences with death, each member (minus Royce) channels the angst that comes with losing someone. Each verse brings a new level of pain and this emotional ballad is sure to relive emotions evoking a certain empathy from the audience.

You can stream this somber single below and head to iTunes to cop if you are feeling it. With their album Welcome to: Our House releasing August 28th,  none of their songs should be slept on, and not just because they drew from their mentor Eminem.
