[Festival Review] Moments & Songs from Treasure Island 2015–SF, 10/17-18

DNP_5253It’s particularly sad to say goodbye to Treasure Island Music Festival. Not only does TI mark the end of the summer festival season, but it’s also a true breathe of fresh air from the oft-overwhelming mega events that have come to dominate the space. With relief from the typical pains of festivals –trouble meeting friends, overcrowded stages, set conflicts and the list goes on–we always walk out of TI refreshed and this year was no exception. Overlooking the San Francisco skyline, Treasure Island’s serenity never fails to amaze us and it didn’t hurt that the weather was pretty much perfect all weekend.

The clear-split lineup that highlighted electronic/hip-hop on Saturday and alternative rock/pop on Sunday gave each day a vibe all its own. Take a trip back with photos and songs from the two different, but equally enjoyable, days.

[Event Preview + Playlist] Black Butter Records’ Official Movement Electronic Music Festival Afterparty Playlist

For Memorial Day Weekend in Detroit, Michigan, a significant portion of dance music enthusiasts will be going to one place and one place only – Movement Electronic Music Festival. The festival holds a lineup predominantly of underground top dogs such as Maceo Plex, Art Department, Richie Hawtin, Seth Troxler B2B The Martinez brothers, and more, but there are also some outsider picks thrown into the mix like Dog Blood, GRiZ, and of course DJ Snoopadelic (Snoop Dogg’s DJ project). No matter who you see, Movement is sure to be one of the top events to attend over the holiday weekend, but why should you have to stop when the festival ends? Why not just party straight through until you’re early morning flight on Tuesday?

Well, Black Butter Records has your back because the UK label and event brand will be hosting the official after party for Movement Electronic Music Festival at the Populux on May 25th. Two of the label’s favorite acts, Gorgon City and Kidnap Kid, will be leading this party with their signature dance stylings with some serious support from Dantiez Saunderson and Loud Luxury. But, Black Butter Records couldn’t stop there, so the UK tastemaking masterminds decided to commission a guest appearance from house aficionado MK who will be going B2B for a special set with Hot Natured’s Lee Foss.

To spice up all your pregame action, we ninjas have put together a playlist of tracks from the event’s lineup to give those not sold yet that push over the tipping point. Tickets for the event are available here!

’Gorgon City – Here For You ft Laura Welsh’
’Go All Night ft. Jennifer Hudson (Zane Lowe’s Hottest Record)’
’Gorgon City – Sky High’
’Jessie Ware – You & I (Forever) (Kidnap Kid Remix)’
’Submotion Orchestra – Swan Song (Kidnap Kid Remix)’
’Raleigh Ritchie – The Greatest (MK Remix II)’

[House] Jessie Ware – Say You Love Me (Gorgon City Remix)

Jessie Ware
Say You Love Me (Gorgon City Remix)

The anticipation is building for the forthcoming album from talented songstress, Jessie Ware. Today, the UK’s Gorgon City help contribute to the momentum with their remix of her beautiful single, “Say You Love Me.” The original version is a slow, emotional ballad, but the talented production duo pick up the tempo transforming it into one of their signature house anthems. Gorgon City often feature strong female vocalists on their tracks making this feel like it could easily be an original from them with Ware’s potent vocals taking it to a whole new level. Kick off your weekend right and grab a free download above. Jessie Ware’s Tough Love is out on October 21st.

[House] Gorgon City – Here For You ft. Laura Welsh

Gorgon City
Here For You ft Laura Welsh

The almighty UK duo of Foamo and RackNRuin, who at this point are tenfold more recognizable as their stage moniker Gorgon City, have been displaying that rare crossover ability; receiving praise from both mainstream and underground media sources, and for completely great reason. Their last few singles have struck a resonant chord around the world, and their newest production entry  “Here For You”, which features a rousing vocal contribution from Laura Welsh, plays like sultry whisper across a shared pillow. Much like some of their crossover contemporaries Route 94 and Duke Dumont, a gripping sense of educated house production is encased within Gorgon City’s beautiful sound, but it is pulled off with such a pop bravado their listeners have no choice but to fall head first into their tunes regardless of preferred music style. For our friends out in Indio this week for Coachella, which is about half the staff here at TMN, you’ll be able to catch them live tomorrow and we recommend you don’t miss that one. If the breakout sets of Coachella past are any indication, we’ll be in the midst of Gorgon City mania stateside by this time next year. We can’t wait for it either. “Here For You” is out soon on Black Butter Records. Be on the lookout.
