[Indie] Hunter Hunted – Keep Together

Dan Chang and Michael Garner are back with another solid indie pop track, “Keep Together”. You may remember these two from their previous venture, Lady Danville. While we’ll miss what they were doing before, we’ve fully embraced what they’re doing now. The two are now referred to as Hunter Hunted. They released a music video a few weeks back called “End of the World”, but this is their first release on soundcloud.

With Hunter Hunted, we’ve already grown to expect a few things: an upbeat, dancy tempo, gorgeous vocal harmonies, and lyrics that urge you to sing along with them. Press play, and see how long you can go without smiling and dancing in your chair.

[Electronica/Indie Rock] Introducing: The Pauses (Interview)

THe Pauses Music

The Pauses are one of those upcoming bands you have never heard before, yet once you do, it almost feels like you are the first one to discover some untapped resource of fresh natural musical goo. While their recording still seems a little rough (granted these are just demo mp3s before they start recording for your debut album in june) you cant help but be taken in by their genuine contemporary pop rock sound with bits of electronica mixed in. It is surprising that they have only been together for little over a year as their amazing chemistry and the way each member bounces of each other, really comes through in their music.

Representing Canada: Malajube

Just found out about Malajube today, a little late there… I know …but better now than never. Malajube are an indie rock band from Montréal, Québec, Canada. They sing in French and have three albums out on Dare to Care Records. They remind me of a more aggressively pop sounding Grizzly Bear. Jian, a sneaky Music Ninja fan, sent us the video and it completely caught me off guard. Did a couple of more digging around and came to the conclusion to get their 2 latest albums. Trompe-l’œil from 2006 and Labyrinthes released this year. A wonderful feeling to discover artists that are consistent throughout all their albums. For the most part the songs are warm and light, yet you can always feel a much darker, serious presence in their calm melodies. Perhaps I wouldn’t be so confused if I understood a word they are saying.

Luna is of their Labyrinthes album whose Music Video dropped in July of 2009. While the much lighter ‘Montréal – 40°C’ came from their, Trompe-l’Oeil, their second record.

An old remix but nonetheless a wonderful version of an already beautiful song. Aside from having one word for band name, both Metric and Stars are popular indie pop/rock groups from the Mother Land Hockey Land of Canada.

[Interview/Indie-Rock] The Shape Of The Earth

shape

I think especially in the 06’s and 07’s too many bands came out trying to sound sentimental and pushing themselves to become the next Dashboard Confessional. This only resulted into a stream of whinny little emo bands across the nation, more so here in Florida where Dashboard was born.

Has it become so difficult to be a soft rock band that doesn’t incorporate moaning, screaming and prolonging vocals that feel like they had just woken up before recording.

It is refreshing to see guys like The Shape Of The Earth coming with sincere and intimate music that doesn’t come across pretentious. A balance between mellow melodies and genuine emotion, The Shape Of The Earth is able to warm your heart without getting under your skin while still leaving some ambiguity for your mind to ponder. Lyrics are generally positive and focus more on painting a picture than pouring emotions over a tune.

They have a wonderful EP out titled “What Goes on Inside Your Cells” that contain some of my favorite songs from: Epilogue and My Defects. They have just released their debut LP and I had the wonderful chance to ask lead singer/songwriter Gavin Bascom a couple of questions about their music.

Q: First I would like to know how you came up with the band’s name, really curious to know if it in some way or another describes the movement behind your music.

Gavin Bascom: Well originally “The Shape Of The Earth” was the name of a song I’d written. I’d thought about the phrase a lot, and eventually thought it would be a good name; the nice thing about it is that it’s a good metaphor for how reality and perception of reality are both relative and absolute. To me the shape of the earth is both flat and round and sometimes hilly, all at the same time, while not really being any of those things alone, and you can’t describe in just one or two words. I wanted this project to have Continue reading
