As with any music festival, after Lollapalooza is over, it always takes us a few days to digest everything and snap back to reality. For locals, the festival serves as an escape within our own city. For outsiders, it provides them with a completely unique way to experience Chicago. The magic of Lollapalooza is simply unmatched, and despite a weather scare early on, Lollapalooza 2016 turned out to be just as memorable as years past. This year in particular will most likely stick out in the minds of many as it marked the 25th anniversary of the festival. Because of this, much of the weekend was filled with nostalgia as artists reflected on some of their past memories of playing the festival or of their ambitions to take the stage in Grant Park while growing up. For the first time ever, this year also added an additional day of festivities, kicking things off early on Thursday to commemorate the festival’s legacy. On the next few pages we’ve broken down some of our lasting impressions from Lolla 2016.

[Hip-Hop] Joey Purp – GIRLS @ (ft. Chance the Rapper)
GIRLS @ Ft. Chance the Rapper
Happy Monday ninjas! We’re sure many of you are still trying to get yourselves in gear for the start of a new week, but allow us to expedite that process for you with Joey Purp’s latest, “Girls @” which features the oh so familiar vocals of Chance The Rapper.
Before we dive into the nitty gritty of the tracks awesomeness, we must forewarn you that this one deserves some quality sound system love. But regardless of how good the speakers, “Girls @” is unarguably going to get your body grooving and your blood pumping.
Fostering an undeniably irresistible beat that seamlessly molds around the flow of Joey and Chances’ lyrics, this release is going to become your go-to “get into the party mood” jam. You’ll also probably find that “Girls @” is going to be your latest song addiction. In other words, it’s the track that is going to be put on repeat for 2 weeks straight while you insist that the driver must forfeit the aux cord for you because it is just that damn good.
[Hip-Hop] Leather Corduroys – Mexican Coke
Mexican Coke (prod. Knox Fortune)
Chicago’s Leather Corduroys, comprised of Kami de Chukwu and Joey Purp, are back at it. The hip-hop duo’s most recent project, Porno Music Vol. II, was one of our favorites this year and they’ve certainly hit the ground running with their latest offering. On “Mexican Coke,” both emcees spit some casually boastful lines about their extensive travels over playful production courtesy Knox Fortune. As much of the music that comes from their SaveMoney collective, this one’s a bouncy listen that could work equally well in a casual or party setting. Check it above.
[Hip-Hop] Leather Corduroys – Porno Music Volume II: TSFR (EP)
Porno Music Volume II: TSFR
Leather Corduroys, consisting of Chitown’s own Kami de Chukwu and Joey Purp, dropped off a brand new EP a couple nights ago and it continue to show why their SaveMoney collective is here to stay. Porno Music Volume II: TSFR, which has no predecessor despite its strange sequel-implying title, is an eclectic and often refreshingly strange mix of music reflective of the state of Midwestern hip-hop.
With production and lyrical content that progressively ranges from lo-fi to full-on trap, the EP is full of creative energy and expression. An especially dope track, “Nightmare on Chicago Ave,” comes on around the 6-minute mark, when the two emcees drop all playfulness and demonstrate that they can hold their own next to any rapper out there.
It is evident through the cohesiveness of the EP that these artists took the time to think about their project as a whole, making it a start-to-finish must listen. Enjoy this one above and look for more heat from SaveMoney this summer.
The Hip-Hop Dojo [Vol. 2]
Welcome back to the Hip-Hop Dojo! It seems just like yesterday we put up the first edition of this humble playlist, but we have all this awesome music to remind of us the time that’s passed. This week’s lineup features some true lyrical wordsmiths, from veterans like Talib Kweli and Ras Kass, to youngsters like Kendrick Lamar and Joey Purp. Although we’re only in our second week, a few artists are already making reappearances like the aforementioned Joey Purp, as well as STS, Sahtyre, King Chip, and Termanology. Since last week’s post ran a little lengthy, we’ve tried to shorten things by highlighting some of the standout material.
We start things off this week with a more conscious vibe. While up-and-comer Eddy B sheds light on some of his harsh realities growing up, Talib and R.A. The Rugged Man take us for a tour around the globe, exploring atrocities many of us may not have been aware of. Meanwhile, ¡Mayday! frontman Wrekonize also provides us with some insight to personal struggles of his own, and the reasons for his “Anxiety Attacks.”
Toning things down in the next section, we’ve assembled a nice collection of songs to share with your other half. One of the most notable items is “Natural Spring Water” from 2AM Club, who flaunt their roots in multiple genres alongside Wichita native, XV. We also have a few recognizable faces in here too. With Tyga & Chris Brown‘s “Fuck For The Road” comes a story of redemption and renewal, while The World Famous Tony Williams and his (arguably more famous) crew of Kanye West, King Chip, and Freddie Gibbs, assemble together for a remix of his ode to that special someone. Lastly, we have a new cut from some TMN favorites, THEBLKHANDS, who utilize a brilliant sample of The xx‘s “Angels” to introduce us to the darker side of love.
The next section just features some good old-fashioned trash talking, a language that’s clearly spoken worldwide as evidenced by our inclusion of London-based ItsNate on the remix of his hit record, “WSLTA” which stands for “Where She Learnt That At.” We also get some outstanding verses from the likes of Joey Purp, GQ, Rapsody, Rocki Evans, Blu, and Smoke DZA along with his new R.F.C. crew. Old-fashioned wasn’t just a figure of speech either, as just about all of these tracks have some ill, old-school vibes to them.
As always, we also have a few cuts ideal for listening between 4:19 and 4:21. B.I.C.‘s spaced-out “DOPM” is definitely a standout in that category. Credit is definitely due to Chuk Le Garcon, who creates a trippy, ethereal beat for the boys to spit on. We can’t forget to give props to Ras Kass for coming up with the possible line of the week on Termanology’s “We Stay High,” spitting, “I’ll put a rapper in a wheelchair like Degrassi.” Sahtyre‘s got a real banger for the second week in a row, with his powerful new single, “Gettin High.”
Speaking of bangers, we’ve got a real treat for you with our next two songs, both featuring prominent samples. While STS definitely does his thing over Kavinsky‘s “Odd Look,” Zak Downtown and Murda Mook absolutely tear apart TNGHT‘s “Higher Ground.” Finally, we decided we’d wrap things up with some uplifting music. “Jordan vs Bird” is a triumphant song from Puck, a unique rapper, who proves he won’t let being resigned to a wheelchair prevent him from taking the court.
I hope you guys enjoyed our second edition of The Hip-Hop Dojo. As always, if you have any suggestions or submissions, feel free to send them over to baseer@themusicninja.com.

The Hip-Hop Dojo [Vol. 1]
It’s been a long time in the making, but it’s finally here! Ladies and Gentleninjas, I now present to you: The Hip-Hop Dojo: Volume 1. You may find yourself asking what exactly to expect upon entering the Dojo.Well, that’s a very good question. The Hip-Hop Dojo allows us to share with you all the great hip-hop music that’s dropped over the last week that either a) we didn’t have time to get to OR b) we may have mistakenly missed. We then present all those tracks in one neat little playlist, with a short sentence or two describing each song. Take a listen below, and make sure to download all the FREE tracks here.
Serving as the intro to our playlist, we have Skizzy Mars‘ “15,” a cascading and uplifting song that’ll be the project starter on his upcoming mixtape, Phases. We then continue the trend with three more inspirational tracks. The first of those is “All I’ve Ever Dreamed Of” by HS87, which takes the namesake of their recent mixtape release. “All I’ve Ever Dreamed Of” is a song with almost two sides. Just as you begin to get a feel for Robin Thicke‘s triumphant chorus, the song slaps you in the face with some banging drums. What else would you expect from a Hit-Boy produced track? Next up on the list is a new single from up-and-coming Philly-duo OCD: Moosh & Twist from their Back to the Basement mixtape. Through the song, the two take turns rapping and singing about their ascent towards worldwide notoriety. If you’re looking for something particularly cheery to brighten up your day, I suggest checking out the music video for this one as well. Finally, rounding out our trio, we have an extremely playful and fun track by DMV-bred Roy Murci called, “Magic Johnson” that definitely has a Wale-esque vibe to it. The next track in the lineup we have is essentially a remix of a remix, as STS tackles Adventure Club‘s remix of Flight Facilities‘ “Crave You” to profess his absolute love for gold. Following things up, we have another new track with a famous sample as Big K.R.I.T. flips James Blake‘s “The Wilhelm Scream” to reflect on his state of mind as he prepares for his upcoming mixtape, King Remembered In Time.
Moving on, what Dojo would be complete without an appearance from a member of the Wu-Tang Clan? Raekwon reminds us of the good ol’ 90’s with his newest effort, spitting some elegant bars over a soulful backdrop. Keystone-native, Tayyib Ali also revives that old school aesthetic, proving that he does anything but follow “The Script.” Next up, we have duo Kidz In The Hall, who bring us a dazzling, head-bopping single in “No Doz.” We then shift over to the West Coast to the savvy pairing of TiRon & Ayomari who forget their filters when discussing their ideas of love and women. Crossing back across the country to New York, we we find Torae and Skyzoo who to want to remind us of the message Wu-Tang made famous 20 years ago, letting us know that “Cash Still Rules” everything.
As we continue forward, we come across a couple of bangers to turn up with your headphones plugged in. Termanology, Ea$y Money, and Nitty Scott MC all flex their mic skills for the hell of it over a reverberant, guitar-laden beat on “Bars For Days”. Our next two tracks feature a common subject: every rapper’s favorite herb. While King Chip takes us to a place known as Clevelafornia to tell us where he prefers to smoke his, the boisterous Sahtyre creates a complete dedication to his favorite vegetable over an insanely wild, high octane beat. Chitown natives Joey Purp and Kami De Chukwu may still be young, but they provide us with some brief insight to all the fun to be had at an “Illuminati Slumber Party.” Staying within the confines of the illest city in the Midwest, Cracko Kain & Vic Spencer speculate upon the state of Chicago operating under martial law. Boldy James’ “Goose Egg,” is a haunting yet infectious number, that’ll have you pressing play again the second it ends.
The final three tracks are meant for more mellow occasions, when you’re looking to just kick back and unwind to some relaxing tunes. We start that process off with SMKA‘s “Good Life.” Laced with a euphoric beat from Kato, ATLiens Playboy Tre, Spree Wilson and Marian Mereba all discuss the struggles endured during the quest for the good life. Coming from young Japanase duo BenZel, “Semi Detached” is a raw, emotional track with stellar, ethereal production that reaches you right to the core. Chance the Rapper blesses the track with a casual, yet introspective guest verse, while British crooner Cass Lowe tugs at our heartstrings with his delicate, whispering vocals. Last but not least, we have the multi-talented MeLo-X, coming to us with “Handle It” which will be featured on his upcoming GOD: LoFi project. With this latest effort, MeLo is able to show off his skills as both a producer and rapper, as he takes M-Phazes‘ remix of Gotye‘s “Somebody I Used To Know” and transforms it into a seductive, soothing bedroom anthem.
We really hope you enjoyed the first edition of The Hip-Hop Dojo. If you have any submissions or suggestions for the next edition, feel free to send them to baseer@themusicninja.com.
