Coachella 2015 – Must See Acts [TMN EDITORS’ PICKS]

TMNCoachThe spectacle and legend of Coachella Valley Arts & Music Festival seems to grow every year and, although it’s certainly reached a critical mass at this point, it proves time and time again to be worth the trip. After breaking box office records for consecutive years, Coachella continues blazing ahead in 2015 with a deep, diverse lineup and some of their most ambitious projects to date including their largest investment in art installations ever. With the first weekend kicking off this Friday, the set times for Coachella were finally let loose yesterday bringing up the regular scheduling conflicts and tough decisions. To make things easier for you all, we’ve decided to lay out our top acts to see every day chronologically. We hope this serves as a useful guide as you prepare for the whirlwind of emotion that is Coachella. Best advice we can give you all: keep good company, don’t sweat (figuratively, of course, perspiration is imminent) and most importantly be safe. Hope to run in to some of you ninjas there!

P.S. We didn’t forget the Do Lab! You can find our Do Lab picks on the final page.

[Bounce] T.I. & Young Thug – About Da Money (Kaytranada Remix)

T.I. & Young Thug
About Da $ (Kaytra Remix)

Young Thug has had an absolutely ridiculous year rising from obscurity to one of the most talked about and controversial artists in hip-hop. Thug tends to be a polarizing figure, but it’s hard to deny the addicting nature of his music. Regardless, the Atlanta emcee’s wild, melodic flows lend themselves perfectly to electronic remixes. Canadian producer Kaytranda, who has had a spectacular year himself, is the latest to take on a Thugger hit with spectacular results. Choosing one of Thug’s catchiest tunes, the T.I.-featuring “About Da Money,” Kaytra minimizes the instrumentation of the original replacing it with a jazzy bounce and keeping the vocals in tact. Perhaps the most compelling part of this re-work comes around the 3:30 mark when it goes full instrumental introducing energetic percussion that creates a supreme groove. Peep this one above–we’re excited to hear what 2015 has in store for both of these rising stars.

GoldLink Hangs with Rick Rubin at 1015 Folsom in SF, 9/25 [Event Review]

GoldLink
Bedtime Story [Prod. Louie Lastic]

Upon our first listen of GoldLink’s debut project, The God Complex, we immediately knew he had the potential to change the landscape of hip-hop. From a technical perspective, the DMV-bred emcee has an impressive, quick-hitting flow with an equally adept vocal range making for a versatile, dynamic sound. What really sets him apart, though, is his openness to work with forward-thinking producers and, maybe even more importantly, the connection his unique, unabashed lyrics find with his audience. Whether it be fun tracks like “Ay Ay” or more introspective cuts like “When I Die,” GoldLink very much feels like a genuine voice that can represent his generation for years to come.

[Hip-Hop] PKeys – Not To Play With (Prod. KAYTRANADA)

P.Keys
Not To Play With (Prod. KAYTRANADA)

Let’s all just be honest here: everything Kaytranada touches is fire. He’s never produced a single bad beat, and rappers are always eager to go in on his latest and greatest. Take PKeys for example. He’s been building up quite the resume on Soundcloud, going in on producers ranging from CRNKN to Kanye West. He’s still got some ways to go in the rap game, however the fact that this fell into our lap should be a big milestone for him. “Not To Play With” is crisp, precise, and in-your-face, which is probably how Kaytray envisioned the results when he dropped this on his Whatever mixtape this past May. Be on the look out for big things coming from PKeys.

[Hip-Hop] The Celestics – 173 (Feat. Waldo)

173(pipo version)
The Celestics ft. Waldo

You remember The Celestics right? The Canadian duo–consisting of super producer Kaytranada & rapper Louie P–burst onto the scene back in May with the release of their mixtape Supreme Laziness. Returning today with the first follow-up to their acclaimed project, the brothers from Montreal team up with Michigan native Waldo for “173.” This new cut finds the emcees spitting gruff yet emphatic rhymes over an ominous, hard-hitting instrumental. With Halloween edging closer than you think, this one makes for a good track to stash away to frighten all the other emcees out there with that with these guys are capable of. Grab the free download above and make sure to stay tuned for more from the pair in the coming months.

[Hip-Hop] Goldlink – Sober Thoughts (prod. Kaytranada)

GoldLink
Sober Thoughts ( Prod. by Kaytranada )

Goldlink quickly became one of our favorite young emcees back in April with his debut project, The God Complex. Earlier today, the DMV-bred artist unleashed a stellar summer jam featuring production from fellow up ‘n comer, Kaytranada. “Sober Thoughts” carries Kaytra’s signature future-funk feel, a perfect backdrop for GL’s relaxed, rapid-fire delivery and soulful chorus.

The aesthetic on all of Goldlink’s music thus far has been impeccable, and his work with the talented producers of Soulection (Lakim, Sango and Kaytranada thus far) has been particularly impressive. We are excited to see how this exciting lyricist can impact the future of rap music but, for now, we’ll just keep his already dope catalog in heavy rotation.

P.S. Kaytranada dropped a zip file on his Facebook page early this morning that includes “Sober Thoughts” among about a dozen other tracks. Download that HERE.
