[Indie/R&B] Kai Straw – GUN LP

You know when you’ve been waiting for something and it finally comes, but then it’s a bit lackluster? That’s not what happened with Kai Straw‘s LP, GUN. We were waiting, yes, but upon its arrival today we weren’t disappointed in any way. From start to finish this project takes Kai’s artistry to new heights.

Released on his own label Tenth Gate Records, GUN is a beautiful mixture of indie, pop, R&B, soul, hip-hop and EDM. It sounds like it’s all over the place, but Kai carefully crafts each track and weaves them together into one project seamlessly. It’s like watching a movie, one that’s easy to absorb and dynamic – flooding your senses with lush tones and melodies that you will never forget. It’s not easy to pick a favorite, but up on in our tops are “They Sent You” and “Jesse James.” Have a listen for yourself and make sure to get a copy of this, or add it to your streaming library from Kai’s website.

[Pop] DEV – I Only See You When I’m Dreamin’ LP

Just over a month ago on September 8th, the California native DEV released the follow up to her Bittersweet July projects. Since then she’s come out with a few singles and remixes with producers, but now we get a fully fledged LP entitled I Only See You When I’m Dreamin’.

Complete with eleven songs and two short audio clips, this project sees DEV take her signature style to new heights. The introductory single “Have It All” really sets the tone nicely for the rest of the album, with a smooth tone and elements from numerous styles of music that are highlighted throughout the rest of the LP. DEV fluidly delivers a mix of R&B, pop, hip-hop and electronic for a multi-layered expression that is more than a simple collection of records. They all weave together so that I Only See You When I’m Dreamin’ is more of a detailed tale than a normal musical album.

As with any artist that has mega hits in their catalog, people are always going to compare the new those songs, but to do that is unfair. DEV has grown as an artist and although she there’s a similar appeal to her hits, she’s grown as an artist and it shows in her work. She still can shine just as bright with magnificent pop works like “Skinny Dippin'” and the crossover treat “My Way” that are two of our favorites off the LP. Other notable singles include “All I Wanna Do,” “Cloud9” and “Bouncy.” Overall it’s a strong album that will take you by surprise. We recommend you get your copy of I Only See You When I’m Dreamin’ today!

PS, if you get a chance to see DEV live, do it!

[Indie/Hip-Hop] Ash Riser – Ghosts LP

If there was only one project you could listen to all week, make it Ghosts by Ash Riser. For one, it’s packed with seventeen tracks, so you’re sure to get your fill, along with some variety. Secondly, it’s an extraordinary project that only Ash has the ability to put together.

As you might guess from an album called Ghosts, the mood overall is quite haunting and dark. Ash has already established himself as a unique creator, but with this LP he cements an undeniable pillar deep in the ground and high in the air for everyone to see that he is a must know artist. He kicks up some hip-hop, but his indie sound doesn’t hold him to any one genre throughout the project. Ghosts isn’t something that should really be analyzed as it speaks for itself in a way that is unrivaled. If you’d like a copy, hit up the digital service of your choice to get it.

[Trap] UZ – Layers LP

Two insane things just happened last Friday. One, UZ dropped an album. Two, UZ revealed his identity. No it’s not Skrillex or Diplo, or anyone else you might have thought, unless you thought it was the 2x world champion DJ TROUBL.

Now that you know the trap lord UZ is the French DJ champion, we can move on to his LP Layers that dropped on his label Quality Goods Records. This project is major, running twelve songs deep with collaborators including Two Fresh, Elliphant, Axel Boy, Oski, Craze, QUIX and so many more. This collection is some of the best work by UZ, a guy who has been putting out music for years now. Some trap guys can’t seem to keep things fresh as time passes, but UZ really took it to the next level. Before you check out the LP, read through why UZ decided to reveal himself below.

“The anonymity was fun when I started it 5 years ago, but now I feel like there’s too many masked artists and it really has become more of a gimmick than a message. Our motto at the time was to let the music speak by itself and not focus on the artist. It’s still true, but now that I’m a curator and I’m working full-time on my label Quality Goods Records, I need to make myself heard, talk to people face to face, etc.… Also people need to know where I’ve come from and where I’m going – right here, right now. It’s just the beginning of a whole new journey for me and I’m really excited about it.”

[Indie/Electronic] Autumn In June – MAGENTA LP

The ever so talented Autumn In June has an album out. If that doesn’t excite you, the only reason for it would be that you don’t know AIJ. If that’s the case, today we enlighten you and if you’re already familiar, then the MAGENTA LP will just increase your love for the LA musician.

Released independently, MAGENTA totals in twelve songs with no collaborators listed. It’s all Autumn In June and it’s all incredible. You don’t see a lot of independents releasing albums these days, and when they do a lot of the time things don’t feel entirely cohesive. That’s not the case with MAGENTA as each song plays off the others to create a full fledged aural picture that is dynamic and beautiful. It’s a project you don’t break up into singles, it’s one you just click play on and experience.

[Pop] Taylor Grey – Space Case LP

We’ve been following Taylor Grey for a bit now and she hasn’t disappointed us even the slightest yet. In fact, she keeps surprising us, with the biggest surprise being the creation of a full fledged album. Space Case is that album and it is packed with a dozen of her singles, including the previously released “Never Woulda Letcha.”

Space Case isn’t your average pop album. With it Taylor takes listeners to different sonic arenas, showcasing an edge of diversity that not all pop artists can or do express in their music. One thing that plays well in this project is the electronic crossover sound that tracks like “Miami” and “Don’t Wanna Wake Up” have. Overall it’s a fun project that anyone can enjoy, whether you like pop or electronic music. It’s got just the right amount of both, a balance that may take Taylor to the top very soon.
