We had a very rare episode to close out 2017 featuring all my favorite tunes of the year and a special guest appearance from former co-host Ninja Dom, in town from London. I started this playlist with about 12 hours worth of music and ended up focusing on tracks from my favorite albums of the year. To round it all out, I mixed together 11 of my favorite 2017 house tracks. We have some even more comprehensive end of year lists from our staff coming to the website later this week so stay locked. Thanks to everyone and anyone who rocked with Music Ninja Radio in 2017! – Ash

Off the heels of Outside Lands, an incredible set from Washed Out in Oakland and escalating social turmoil, I had a wide array of music to share on this week’s episode–from the left field hip-hop of ZGTO to Photay‘s infectious electronica to straight disco bliss from Folamour and Moon Boots. There’s a lot going on in the world right now and I hope this injection of diverse tunes helps you get through the week!

[R&B/Soul] Moon Boots – Keep the Faith (Feat. Nic Hanson)

Things are heating up this summer for rising DJ and producer Moon Boots aka Peter Dougherty. August 4th he’ll be releasing his debut album First Landing on London based label, Anjunadeep, a hotbed for dutifully picked music gold. Recently released is one of 10 tracks on the upcoming LP, and if the remaining nine are anything like this one we’re in for quite a treat come August.

Moon Boots keeps things laid back and groovy with vocals by Nic Hanson while jazzy guitar and a soulful melody binds this track into the ultimate Summer release leaving us anticipating the remaining album. We’re thinking this track best pairs with a coastal highway, top down convertible, and your best road trip crew. Make sure to stream and download “Keep the Faith” here.

Pre-order the album and view tour dates here.

‘First Landing’ Track list:
1. Fortune Teller feat. King Kona
2. Keep The Faith feat. Nic Hanson

5. Power feat. Black Gatsby
6. I Want Your Attention feat. Fiora
7. Utopia feat. Janelle Kroll

[House] Robyn & La Bagatelle Magique – Love is Free (Moon Boots Remix)

Love Is Free (Moon Boots Remix)

As the TMN team works hard on putting together our end of the year lists, Moon Boots is a name fresh in our minds. The NYC deep house/nu-disco producer has made a name for himself this year providing us with both remixes and originals with endless replay value. To round the year out, he’s dropped a remix of Robyn & La Bagatelle Magique’s “Love is Free” injecting it with his groovy ethos. While the original is a hard-hitting, and fantastic, electro-pop tune, Moon Boots switches it up with a four-on-the-floor backdrop and a series of bouncy synths. It’s a remix that works equally well on and off the dance floor. Give it a peep above.

Utopia feat. Janelle Kroll

Moon Boots goes a bit tropical with his new single “Utopia” featuring Janelle Kroll. The American act’s zero gravity style takes a melodic route down a soft, radio-friendly path. Moon Boots paints a minimal soundscape that Janelle’s voice takes over for a magnificent musical package. They’re a match made in heaven, which had to be the case given the name of the record. They truly build a musical utopia that listeners can bask in as long as they’d like, all for free too. Despite it’s tropical influences, it’s not some straight up Kygo stuff, Moon Boots creates his own niche sound that is a chill paradise. Moon Boots continues to impress, and look out for the producer to keep it up through the end of the year, and onto the next.

[Festival Review] Four Days In The Life of a Ninja at Movement Music Festival

Detroit’s fabled Movement Electronic Music Festival (formerly DEMF) was a visceral experience to say the least. From the sternum throttling bass kicks of the world’s loudest soundsystems designed exactly for all facets of dance music, the artificial crunch of plastic bottles and beer cans condensing beneath our feet in a warehouse basement at 5:00 a.m., to the general amounts of love from nearly every corner of the industry; we had an engaging and wonderful time. And with new owners Paxahau doing most everything in their ability to ensure a great Memorial Day Weekend, for the most part, the shows went off without a hitch.

Our team arrived late Friday night, and with still at least a couple of hours left in the evening to party before Movement’s official kick off the following afternoon, we headed to Detroit’s gritty warehouse district for an incredibly deep and storied lineup featuring both Moodyman and Theo Parrish taking us all to the Church of House through a vinyl only, eclectic set fusing neo-jazz, classic disco and plenty of contemporary house and techno without well… too much mixing really. It was certainly a throwback night in every sense, even an ode to Paradise Garage maestro Larry Levan style mixing. It was great to get back to our roots, stop being so damn critical, just enjoy a couple of dance music legends and set the stage for our weekend.
