Treasure Island 2016: 12 Must See Acts — SF 10/15-16 [Festival Preview]

culrt-fumaam8ayIf you’ve been following The Music Ninja over the last few years, you already know that Treasure Island Music Festival reigns atop our list of best music events in the Bay Area. Rounding out peak festival season, TIMF consistently avoids the repetitive lineups that plague competitors while offering an ideal environment for attendees worn out from over-crowded events. 2016 is an important year for the festival marking both its 10th anniversary and final year taking place on Treasure Island itself as a result of upcoming real estate development. Thankfully it will not be the end altogether for the SF staple, which will be relocating to a TBD destination come 2017 (the SF Chronicle even has a poll where you can vote on where it should be).

With those milestones in mind, Noise Pop have stepped up their already fantastic curation bringing what may be our favorite lineup to date. Our best advice would be to catch as many artists as the schedule permits, be prepared for the rain and stop by the Silent Disco. Although we know and love pretty much every artist on this weekend’s bill, we’ve curated our top picks for each day below. Hope to see some of you Ninjas on the island! Continue reading

[Future] Sam Gellaitry – Waiting So Long (CRNKN Remix)

Sam Gellaitry
Waiting So Long (CRNKN Remix)

At the ripe age of 22, future producer CRNKN has become the torch-bearer of musical relevance for his home state of New Hampshire. Championing Northeast vibes from his new home in Los Angeles, CRNKN has put together quite an impressive track record thus far, earning him spots in the Northern Nights and Shambhala Music Festivals later this summer.

CRNKN has made a name for himself relatively quickly by releasing unique, aesthetically diverse remixes of popular songs by Alesso, Purity Ring, Major Lazer, and Banks.

This morning, CRNKN released a remix of fellow up-and-comer Sam Gellaitry’s song “Waiting So Long”, the latest attempt at pioneering his unique sounds among an increasingly talented new wave of musicians. It’s a unique take on Sam Gellaitry’s original; complete with a heavy synth-ensemble, toned-down trumpet sequences, and timely bass looped over the playful vocals–reminiscent of recent works by Brasstracks. Enjoy a taste of the future above and grab a free download if you’re feeling it.

[Hip-Hop/Indie] T.Shirt – Purity Ring x T.Shirt (Mixtape)

As dark and mysterious as Purity Ring‘s music is, it makes surprisingly good material for a remix. That’s exactly what New York based rapper T.Shirt does on this mixtape, grabbing bits and pieces from Purity Ring’s excellent debut album, Shrines, and adding some mellow bars of his own. T.Shirt doesn’t miss a beat on this project, matching each unique note with perfect rhythm. He even switches his style multiple times throughout, showcasing his diverse skillset as an emcee and his ability to adapt easily to changes within the flow of the music. While T.Shirt doesn’t remix the album track by track, he does bring together an awesome 15-minute blend that shows exactly the type of music these two forces could create should they choose to collaborate sometime in the future. For now, we can only hope for more.
