We had a very rare episode to close out 2017 featuring all my favorite tunes of the year and a special guest appearance from former co-host Ninja Dom, in town from London. I started this playlist with about 12 hours worth of music and ended up focusing on tracks from my favorite albums of the year. To round it all out, I mixed together 11 of my favorite 2017 house tracks. We have some even more comprehensive end of year lists from our staff coming to the website later this week so stay locked. Thanks to everyone and anyone who rocked with Music Ninja Radio in 2017! – Ash

[Alternative R&B] Willow Smith feat. SZA – 9

Willow Smith
9 (feat. SZA)

The talented Willow Smith is set to take over the industry with the release of her upcoming 3 EP. Only 14 years of age, the music star child shows her new found passion in alternative R&B. Of the three songs in the EP, “9” stands out as the track that best represents Willow’s current direction of her music. Her sharp and powerful vocals flow perfectly alongside SZA’s magical voice to help create a dreamy touch to the hollowed instrumental. It’s a memorable and wonderful track.

With an ever-growing fan base, Willow Smith is climbing up the ladder in the neo-soul/alternative R&B scene. As she continues to catch everyone by surprise with her new music, it is safe to say that sky is the limit for Ms. Smith. We are excited to see what else she has in store for us.

[Hip-Hop] SZA – Babylon (feat. Kendrick Lamar)

SZA
Babylon feat. Kendrick Lamar

Just a day away from the release of her debut album, SZA keeps the buzz high letting loose a track featuring her fellow Top Dawg Entertainment  signee Kendrick Lamar. “Babylon” fits nicely with the tracks we have already heard from the project as SZA displays her uniquely airy sound over mellow, but heavy instrumental from DJ Dahi, the producer of a number of recent hits including “My Type of Party.” As expected, Kendrick delivers an amazing verse delving into the themes of introspection and solitude initially introduced by SZA. Enjoy this track above and look for on iTunes tomorrow.

[Chill] SZA – Childs Play (feat. Chance the Rapper) (prod. XXYYXX)

SZA ft. Chance the Rapper
Childs Play (prod. XXYYXX)

Top Dawg Entertainment‘s first female signee SZA, who is currently gearing up to release a project, dropped off an incredibly laid-back tune just a few minutes ago. As if one new Chance the Rapper verse wasn’t enough for today, the young emcee also snagged some bars on this cut. If you are already familiar with Orlando-based phenom producer XXYYXX, you will likely recognize the production from his 2012 track “About You” although it has been slightly sped up with some additional instrumentation by Dae One.

SZA’s vocals glide over the haunting, down-tempo beat and Chance delivers a solid verse that displays both his lyricism and unique singing voice. When the vocals of TDE’s first lady and Chance collide near the end, they make for a soothing harmony that close out the song perfectly. Peep above and keep an eye out for SZA’s project, Z,  which is set to drop on April 8th.

[Chill] SZA – Ice.Moon.Revisited (Feat. Ab-Soul)

SZA
Ice.Moon Revisited feat. Ab-Soul

TDE songstress SZA has been on her grind over the past month and returns to the interwebs today with a new rendition of her latest single. This time around, the beautiful singer links up with her fellow labelmate Ab-Soul for the renamed “Ice.Moon.Revisited.” The track finds both artists showing off their respective skills over a dark and menacing Felix Snow and Pat Lukens beat. Driven by heavy-hitting bass through drum work and contrasting soft bells, the two compliment the production well with their talents. This is definitely a track to sit-back and listen to if you’re looking for a mental escape. Make sure to check out the official video for the original as well below.

[R&B/Alternative] SZA – Aftermath

Teaming with WNDRBRD, indie artist SZA takes listeners on a trippy confessional on her latest single “Aftermath”. Proclaiming that she is not human but made of bacon, fairytales, and pixie dust, this songstress’ vocals dance over the airy synth beat. Equal parts quirky but charming, haunting but mesmerizing, I am not sure whether to take this as a comical tune or fall in love with the addictive melody over the drum-driven rhythms. Fans of this psychedelic tune can hear more when her S project drops later this year.
