The homie and master beatmaker Causmic dropped by TMN Radio this week to share selections from his debut solo album Wormholes and a few tracks that inspired it. We chopped it up about the galaxy, our mutual love of Flying Lotus and the visual influences behind ‘Wormholes.’ Building off Causmic’s otherworldly originals, we kept the instrumentals going with a wide array of experimental beats and a sprinkle of new hip-hop.

[NEW] Kendrick Lamar – To Pimp A Butterfly (Album Stream)

In a strange turn of events, Kendrick Lamar‘s highly anticipated album is now available on Spotify and iTunes.  Top Dawg Entertainment label boss Anthony Tiffith sent out a few tweets after the album mysteriously appeared suggesting that the surprise drop was a mistake. Accident or not, though, it’s really great to hear what Kendrick’s been working on since his instant classic debut studio album. While Good Kid, m.A.A.d. City told the story of a young Kendrick, To Pimp A Butterfly sees a composed, mature and confident Lamar delivering organic funk & soul-inspired new age hip-hop. Although we’ll want some more time with it, we’re loving what we’ve heard thus far. Check out the Spotify stream below or head to iTunes to pick up a digital copy. It will be interesting to see how this rollout unfolds as more information on what actually happened becomes available. Regardless, we’re more than excited about the new music. Continue reading

[NEW] Kendrick Lamar – King Kunta

Kendrick Lamar
King Kunta

With Kendrick Lamar‘s sophomore album release around the corner, the anticipation, speculation and hype is at an all time high. Today, we get another glimpse into the project with “King Kunta,” an ode to the P-Funk era. Over a groovy bassline, King Kendrick delivers a gritty empowering message with a James Brown-esque cadence. In the closing chapter of George Clinton‘s memoir, he talks about working with Kendrick Lamar. “King Kunta” likely emerged from those sessions with its distinct Parliament/Funkadelic sound. Give this one a listen above–To Pimp A Butterfly drops on March 23rd. Check out what Clinton had to say about Lamar below:

George Clinton: The other day I did a session with the rapper Kendrick Lamar. Even before I met him I was laughing at “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe,” which had the same silly-serious tone we tried for in Funkadelic. He came down to Tallahassee to record with me, and it was beautiful…He acts like he’s about fifty with all his theories. When I met Sly Stone, he knew of P-Funk because he heard those records himself, as they came out. When I met Rakim, he knew of P-Funk because he listened to his brother’s records. With Kendrick, it was his parents’ records. He didn’t just know the hits. He knew the deepest of the deep cuts. When you talk about your old work with a young man with an old mind, the work feels less old. We talked about my old songs and they were renewed. When the past comes rushing into the present that way, I can see clearly that artwork is a living thing. Younger artists teach me that I taught them. That’s why I’m grateful to Kendrick Lamar, and to anyone who is carrying on the P-Funk tradition.

[Chill] SZA – Childs Play (feat. Chance the Rapper) (prod. XXYYXX)

SZA ft. Chance the Rapper
Childs Play (prod. XXYYXX)

Top Dawg Entertainment‘s first female signee SZA, who is currently gearing up to release a project, dropped off an incredibly laid-back tune just a few minutes ago. As if one new Chance the Rapper verse wasn’t enough for today, the young emcee also snagged some bars on this cut. If you are already familiar with Orlando-based phenom producer XXYYXX, you will likely recognize the production from his 2012 track “About You” although it has been slightly sped up with some additional instrumentation by Dae One.

SZA’s vocals glide over the haunting, down-tempo beat and Chance delivers a solid verse that displays both his lyricism and unique singing voice. When the vocals of TDE’s first lady and Chance collide near the end, they make for a soothing harmony that close out the song perfectly. Peep above and keep an eye out for SZA’s project, Z,  which is set to drop on April 8th.

[Chill] SZA – Ice.Moon.Revisited (Feat. Ab-Soul)

SZA
Ice.Moon Revisited feat. Ab-Soul

TDE songstress SZA has been on her grind over the past month and returns to the interwebs today with a new rendition of her latest single. This time around, the beautiful singer links up with her fellow labelmate Ab-Soul for the renamed “Ice.Moon.Revisited.” The track finds both artists showing off their respective skills over a dark and menacing Felix Snow and Pat Lukens beat. Driven by heavy-hitting bass through drum work and contrasting soft bells, the two compliment the production well with their talents. This is definitely a track to sit-back and listen to if you’re looking for a mental escape. Make sure to check out the official video for the original as well below.

[Hip-Hop] Ab-Soul – The End is Near (ft Mac Miller)

West coast emcee Ab-Soul has been on his grind lately with some dope new material. Taking to the inter webs today, he drops off a new musical gem titled “The End is Near”. Over this Larry Fisherman production, Soul delivers some intricate and thought provoking rhymes that will definitely have you hitting the replay button to process what he is exactly talking about. Bringing in Mac Miller for a quick but subtle verse, this TDE chill track has a hint of nostalgic old school rap.

[NEW] ScHoolboy Q – Yay Yay (Prod. Boi-1da)

ScHoolboy Q
Yay Yay (Prod. by Boi-1da)

Black Hippy‘s ScHoolboy Q is preparing to release his debut album with Interscope Records later this year and today we are blessed with what appears to be the first single. As we have come to expect from Q, he delivers with gritty rhymes regarding mature material in a way that is refreshingly ratchet. The thumping, disorienting producing of Boi-1da perfectly matches Q’s style making “Yay Yay” an absolute banger. We’ve already got one classic album from a Black Hippy member in Kendrick Lamar’s Good Kid m.A.A.d. City, and ScHoolboy Q’s Oxymoron is looking to have what it takes to be yet another with a completely different sound. I can only really describe this song in the words of Q, “YAK! YAK! YAK!”
