With rain coming down in SF, this week’s episode came together just at the right time. After a multiple year hiatus, The Music Ninja’s weekly Sunday Night Soul returned last weekend. To celebrate, I had Ninja Baseer put together the first couple segments with a mix of soulful, forward-leaning R&B tunes. After touching on the dissociative pysch rock of Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s latest album, the remainder of the show was dedicated to hazy, lo-fi house. Anchored by a selection Ross From Friends stellar Brainfeeder debut, the last hour hits right in the late night feels.

[Electronic] TOKiMONSTA – Don’t Call Me feat. Yuna

TOKiMONSTA
Don’t Call Me ft. Yuna

“Don’t Call Me” by TOKiMONSTA is one of the sweetest singles of the year. Not sweet in the cutie patootie loving way, but sweet in its own unique sense. Together with Yuna, TOKiMONSTA created a deep and celestial record that will touch the hearts of many.

“Don’t Call Me” portrays a scenario many of us have found ourselves in before. TOKiMONSTA always manages to create emotional soundscapes that echo the mood of the song’s lyrics to perfection. Her ability to conjure specific emotions, even when the emotional landscape she’s painting in her music is complex, is unrivaled by most. “Don’t Call Me” is just another piece of evidence as to why she is one of the strongest songwriters in electronic music. Her collaboration has been released on her own label, Young Art Records, and is out now on digital stores.

[Festival Review] Outside Lands IX : Revisiting the Most Memorable Acts of the Weekend

OSL7In continuing to build on the foundation laid nine years ago, Another Planet Entertainment has once again outdone themselves; the final product being yet another successfully executed Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival. The 2016 version – keen on replicating the successes of previous iterations – was calculated in its approach, careful not to break the trends and quirks that have made it such a mainstay to the community.

Instead, APE kept what has worked and improved upon it; meaning deeper lineups, aesthetically more impressive sound and lighting productions, finally allowing payment via RFID-enabled festival wristbands, and a fair amount of side stages to keep all wandering pseudo-bohemians well occupied. Unfortunately, along with the quality improvements also came a pretty substantial price adjustment – putting on a nationally recognized festival is big business, after all.

Those willing to stomach the uptick were treated to an especially diverse lineup ranging from saxophone playing acts like Kamasi Washington and GRiZ, nostalgia-inducing pop rock outfit Third Eye Blind, platinum (and featureless) hip hop artist J.Cole, EDM prodigy Zedd, the Jack-of-all-trades Garratt, and rags to riches rapper Anderson .Paak.

[Electronic] TOKiMONSTA – Drive (feat. Arama)

TOKiMONSTA
Drive Feat. Arama

The talented TOKiMONSTA never disappoints. The LA producer gives us a sneak peek of her up and coming album “Desiderium” this time around. This gem is titled “Drive”, a collaboration with singer Arama.

TOKiMONSTA incorporates smart and exciting electronic elements into this fast paced hip-hop beat, creating something so enjoyable to listen to that you can’t help but head bob and sway to it. The jumpy and detached piano synths in the beginning set the tone of this magical tune. Arama’s vocals match so well with the flow of the song, which is super fun and upbeat. The two-track harmonizing vocals are definitely what make this tune so special. It’s so good but short that it just leaves you wanting more.

Needless to say, we are extremely excited to see what TOKiMONSTA has up her sleeves. Make sure to grab a copy of her new album which comes out on 9/23. Or preorder it here.
