Tropics Talks Inspiration, Artistic Evolution and the Making of ‘Rapture’ [TMN Exclusive Interview]

Rapture

’Tropics – Blame’

The “chillwave” movement has matured phenomenally in the last couple years with acts like Toro y Moi and Washed Out evolving their sound from lo-fi bedroom productions to beautiful and complex musical compositions. UK producer and vocalist, Tropics, has architected his own chillwave aesthetic that, true to its name, features a vibrant sensibility and deep sonic textures. On his debut album, Parodia Flare, Tropics put together a beautiful collection of colorful compositions and began experimentation with his voice, but his recently released follow-up, Rapture, feels like a true breakout project. With stripped down organic instrumentation and a newfound focus on vocals, Rapture proves a cohesive, deeply emotional and soulful project that reaches new depths without losing the glowing energy of its predecessor. We had a chance to catch up with Chris Ward, the mind behind Tropics, about his musical background and influences, the evolution of his sound and more. Check out the interview below and, if you like what you hear, head to iTunes to grab a copy of Rapture.

TMN: What was your first experience with making or playing music?

Tropics: The furthest back I can remember was this little early learning centre tape player with a microphone attached to it. It was really kid-like and colourful. I remember it having this weird echo which probably sounded quite cool. I used to record songs off the radio. Then my first memory of playing music was getting a drum kit at around 10.

TMN: You studied music in university and are a multi-instrumentalist, right? How integral has that been in allowing you to bring your vision to life? Or do you feel like you’ve learned more from just from experience?

Tropics: I wouldn’t say I’m a multi instrumentalist, I’m a producer, who like most of us can play keys and a strum out a few jams on guitar, drums. I feel I’ve learned a lot from experience but some more theory and things about the industry when I studied music, but to be honest; I didn’t do a lot of studying, I just wanted to go to university with all my friends and have all the free time in the world to party, take recreational drugs, have lots of sex and make as much music as I could.

TMN: The colourful aesthetic in your music definitely brings some influences to mind. Who are some artists you grew up listening to that you feel continue to inspire you today? Any ones who’ve influenced you in unexpected ways?

Tropics: I think there’s influence from a lot of 90s electronica, in my sort of ‘go to textures and sounds’. My older brother played me loads of Leftfield, Massive Attack, Faithless and Underworld when I was around 11 or 12, which I ended up getting back into quite a lot at 16 and 17.

I think one of the great things back then was that the Internet wasn’t so revolved around the music industry, or if it was, I wasn’t aware. So I’d get records/albums, without taking interest of reading into when they were released or how current they were . If I connected with it, I just connected with it and it became my new love affair. I feel I’ve lost this a bit or, a lot of us have, with the pressure to keep up with this quickly moving industry with 100 new flavours and artists coming through a month!

7 Acts We Loved At Noise Pop Festival 2015–SF, 2/20-3/1 [Festival Review + Playlist]

Flight Facilities-16Now in its 23rd year, Noise Pop Festival has become an absolute staple of the Bay Area for fans of independent music, film and art. With multiple shows every night at some of the best venues SF and Oakland have to offer, Noise Pop presented the best kind of difficult decisions on a daily basis. The Noise Pop HQ, at the newly renovated Swedish American Hall, was a fantastic destination as well hosting intimate shows, happy hours and even a live podcast recording with Toro y Moi where he premiered “Half Dome,” the eighth track from his upcoming album. Although there were plenty of activities outside of the concerts, being the ninjas we are, we’re going to focus on our favorite performances from the week. Browse through some pictures and songs in our chronologically ordered list below.

1. Flight Facilities, 2.24 @ The Regency Ballroom

Why we loved it: Australian DJ duo Flight Facilities, of the esteemed Future Classic, took stage at The Regency in full aviation gear for an energetic set. What really took their performance to the next level was live vocal assistance from talented Owl Eyes and Surahn Sidhu, member of Empire of the Sun, who covered female and male parts of Flight Facilities’ countless hits. [Chill] Harriet Brown & Astronauts etc. – Fiction

Harriet Brown & Astronauts etc.
Fiction

After dropping the impressive Sadie EP last year, Oakland-based producer/vocalist Anthony Ferraro, aka Astronauts etc., has returned with his first release of 2015, a phenomenal collaboration with rising LA talent Harriet Brown. “Fiction” rests on a wobbling bass-line layered with psychedelic, wavy instrumentation creating an ethereal atmosphere. It is the soulful vocals, though, that really bring the sonic on this track to life as Brown flexes his creative vocal delivery and range. With Toro y Moi‘s Chaz Bundick also contributing to the production, it comes as little surprise that “Fiction” ends up sounding like a chillwave masterpiece. If you’re not yet familiar with Harriet Brown, we’d also definitely recommend checking out his refreshingly unique New Era EP. Zone to this marvelous song above and, for all the SF ninjas, Harriet Brown and Astronauts etc. will be performing together for free tonight at Brick & Mortar Music Hall

[NEW] Toro y Moi – Empty Nesters

Toro Y Moi
Empty Nesters

Toro y Moi‘s Anything in Return was easily one of our favorite albums of 2013, remaining in heavy rotation well over a year later. After taking a brief hiatus from Toro to focus on Les Sins in 2014, Chaz Bundick recently announced that he will be putting out a new Toro y Moi album later this year. Today, we get the first single from the project, which was first premiered yesterday on Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 show. “Empty Nesters” carries the care-free, breezy vibrations we’ve come to expect from Toro y Moi, but relies more heavily on guitar melodies than usual resulting in a winning combination of slacker pop and funk. Bundick has proven himself as one of the most versatile musicians of his generation and “Empty Nesters” seems to be yet another iteration in his artistic evolution. Enjoy this one above–Toro y Moi’s What for?  is due out on April 7th via Carpark Records.

[Electonic] Les Sins – Why (Feat. Nate Salman)

Les Sins
Why Ft. Nate Salman

Les Sins, the electronic, house-leaning alter-ego of Toro Y Moi‘s Chaz Bundick, returns tonight with the second release from his forthcoming debut album. While the first glimpse, “Bother,” had a darker, garage feel to it, the latest from Bundick features vocals from Nate Salman leaning a bit more towards the synth-powered funk we are used to from Toro y Moi. The fusing of his two styles makes for an up-tempo, dance-able track that is probably our favorite from the Les Sins project yet. Groove to this tropical, disco tune above. Les Sins’s Michael drops on November 4th and can be pre-ordered via iTunes now.

[House] Chromeo ft. Toro Y Moi – Come Alive (Le Youth Remix)

Come Alive (Le Youth Remix)

There’s absolutely no denying the immense pop power of Chromeo and Toro Y Moi‘s latest collusion “Come Alive”, which is without a doubt one of the catchiest and alluring tunes in everyone’s stream of consciousness at the moment, and to think any more energy could be symbiotically added on top was pretty far fetched before today. Enter Le Youth. The enigmatic L.A. based House and Nu-Disco producer – who by the way throws down some of the funnest live sets going on in the house clubs right now – impels a heavy dose of vigorous hi-hat shuffle, and four-four kick to bring both Dave1 and Chaz Bundick’s unmistakable vocals straight into the dance hall. Our real sense of enjoyment on Le Youth’s remix however was an impeccable employment of that tried and true classic house piano a la Marshall Jefferson that was made so famous all the way back in ’86, giving off a vibrant shine while adding another layer of depth to the entire movement. It’s early, but we assume more producers will take a crack at reassembling “Come Alive”, but for us right now, Le Youth takes the cake.
