After a week away at Form Arcosanti, there were a bunch of new albums to catch up on from Slowdive, Nick Hakim, Nite Jewel, Hoops & more. The resulting mix made for a more laid back episode until the end where we got into some vocal-driven indie electronic tunes from Nick Murphy and newcomers Worth Way along with some hard-hitting bass music from the likes of Vincent, Flume and Sinjin Hawke.

60+ Songs to Prepare for Treasure Island Music Festival in SF, 10/18-19 [Event Preview + Playlist]

timf2014-sfweekly-fullpgLineups for major music festivals often boast 100+ artists, which although in theory is a great concept, can end up being overwhelming and frustrating when you realize the impossibility of seeing every act on the bill. San Francisco’s Treasure Island Music Festival, a collaboration between Noise Pop and Another Planet Entertainment, provides one of the few exceptions to this conundrum electing to go with fewer artists and alternating sets at only two stages. Having attended last year, we found this to be a genius, albeit seemingly obvious, solution making the experience far more relaxed for festival-goers without sacrificing any quality in the music. Aside from the unique arrangement, the backdrop of Treasure Island overlooks both the Bay and Golden Gate bridges and has one of the more stunning sunsets the Bay Area has to offer. For anyone who will be attending this year, we also highly recommend checking out the non-stop Silent Disco stage courtesy Silent Frisco.

To help you all prepare for what should be an amazing weekend of music, we’ve put together a massive playlist including every single artist on the TIMF lineup because, with no overlapping sets, you will actually have the opportunity to see them all. Whether you’ve already got your ticket, are still on the fence or can’t make it this year, we hope this serves as a fun, introduction to a dynamic collection of musicians. One and two-day passes for Treasure Island Music Festival are still available so, if you like what you hear below, grab your tickets HERE.

[Chill] SZA – Childs Play (feat. Chance the Rapper) (prod. XXYYXX)

SZA ft. Chance the Rapper
Childs Play (prod. XXYYXX)

Top Dawg Entertainment‘s first female signee SZA, who is currently gearing up to release a project, dropped off an incredibly laid-back tune just a few minutes ago. As if one new Chance the Rapper verse wasn’t enough for today, the young emcee also snagged some bars on this cut. If you are already familiar with Orlando-based phenom producer XXYYXX, you will likely recognize the production from his 2012 track “About You” although it has been slightly sped up with some additional instrumentation by Dae One.

SZA’s vocals glide over the haunting, down-tempo beat and Chance delivers a solid verse that displays both his lyricism and unique singing voice. When the vocals of TDE’s first lady and Chance collide near the end, they make for a soothing harmony that close out the song perfectly. Peep above and keep an eye out for SZA’s project, Z,  which is set to drop on April 8th.

Beyonce – Check On It (XXYYXX Remix)

Florida-based seventeen year old production protege, XXYYXX, has been in heavy rotation for this ninja over the last few months. His experimental style often fuses ethereal vocal samples (think Clams Casino) with trap-esque 808-percussion for an incredibly relaxing, at times disorienting, feel. On his latest effort he chops up some classic Beyonce, from the Destiny’s Child days ,with his own assortment of complex drum patterns. The result is a trippy, manic and brief rendition of the original that captures the young artist’s unique sound, which I like to refer to as “cloud trap.” Check the remix, titled “AMAZEME,” below!

’XXYYXX – AMAZEME’

P.S. If you’re digging this as much as we are, make sure to check XXYYXX’s Bandcamp and SoundCloud pages where you can grab a bunch of his music for free.

[Hip-Hop] Kami de Chukwu – Light (Mixtape)

After several impressive leaks, Chicago-based Kami de Chukwu, of the SaveMoney collective, released his debut mixtape a few days ago catapulting himself onto the radar of many open-minded hip-hop fans. Through out Light, Kami showcases a wide range of lyrical ability experimenting and growing along the way. With a diverse collection of original and classic production ranging from J Dilla to Hudson Mohawke to Nosaj Thing, there is bound to be something for all music listeners on this tape. On some tracks, such as “Manifest” and “Ig’Nant,” Chukwu comes off dark and cunning, while on cuts like “Prey” and “Red Rover” he shows a more pensive and laid back side. Light is a courageous first effort as the beat selection is lightyears from conventional. However, Chukwu pulls it off nearly flawlessly with the help of some fellow Chi-town reps.

Lights is an essential project for hip-hop fans and really anyone fascinated by the blurring of genre lines. Stream some of our favorite tracks below and download the whole tape free here: Kami de Chukwu – Light.
