culrt-fumaam8ayIf you’ve been following The Music Ninja over the last few years, you already know that Treasure Island Music Festival reigns atop our list of best music events in the Bay Area. Rounding out peak festival season, TIMF consistently avoids the repetitive lineups that plague competitors while offering an ideal environment for attendees worn out from over-crowded events. 2016 is an important year for the festival marking both its 10th anniversary and final year taking place on Treasure Island itself as a result of upcoming real estate development. Thankfully it will not be the end altogether for the SF staple, which will be relocating to a TBD destination come 2017 (the SF Chronicle even has a poll where you can vote on where it should be).

With those milestones in mind, Noise Pop have stepped up their already fantastic curation bringing what may be our favorite lineup to date. Our best advice would be to catch as many artists as the schedule permits, be prepared for the rain and stop by the Silent Disco. Although we know and love pretty much every artist on this weekend’s bill, we’ve curated our top picks for each day below. Hope to see some of you Ninjas on the island!

Day 1

Kamaiyah || 12:45PM, Tunnel Stage

’Kamaiyah – How You Want It’

Sounds like…some of the brightest talent coming out of Oakland’s hip-hop scene. Few artists are bringing Bay Area rap to the national stage quite like Kamaiyah. – Ash

Sofi Tukker || 2:15PM, Tunnel

’Awoo (feat. Betta Lemme)’

Sounds like…some of the most addicting dance music you’ll hear all weekend. – Ash

Mura Masa || 3PM, Bridge Stage

’Mura Masa – What If I Go?’

Sounds like…a perfect contrast of emotionally moving and hard-hitting, trap-influenced elements. – Ash

Glass Animals || 6:10PM, Bridge

’Glass Animals – Life Itself’

Sounds like…sneaking out of the house while listening to a whispering lullaby of minimalist, downtempo beats. – Dom

Flight Facilities || 7PM, Tunnel

’Flight Facilities – Down To Earth’

Sounds like…the epitome of chill house. Hugo & Jimmy have toured the world and gained fame on the strength of the 2014 debut album Down to Earth. Expect a special guest appearance or two to spice up the performance. – Dom

Duke Dumont || 8:35PM, Tunnel

’Duke Dumont – Won’t Look Back’

Sounds like…that one song you heard at 1015 Folsom; you know, the one with the catchy part. – Dom

Day 2

dnp_6760Day Wave || 12PM, Bridge

’Day Wave – You Are Who You Are’

Sounds like…lo-fi, breezy (and local!) indie rock that’ll bring out some sun even with this weekend’s expected rain. – Ash

Mac Demarco || 4:15PM, Bridge

’Mac DeMarco – Freaking Out The Neighborhood’

Sounds Like…watching the sunset from your rooftop, as your two neighbors play Blitzen Trapper and Panda Bear in succession. – Dom

Tycho || 5:50PM, Bridge

’Tycho – Source’

Sounds like…a pleasant, solo walk through the moonlit shores of Big Sur. – Dom

James Blake || 7:30PM, Bridge

’James Blake Feat. Chance the Rapper – Life Round Here’

Sounds likemesmerizing, soul-gripping, glitchy electro-soul. – Ash

Purity Ring || 8:30PM, Tunnel

’Danny Brown – 25 Bucks feat. Purity Ring’

Sounds like…our favorite act from TIMF 2015, to be honest. The differences between the talented songstresses Megan James (Purity Ring) and Lauren Mayberry (Chvrches) are nearly indiscernible. – Dom

Sigur Ros || 9:20PM, Bridge

’Sigur Ros – Sæglópur’

Sounds like…an orchestral, psychedelic sonic depiction of Icelandic folklore. Seriously don’t miss this group! – Ash
