[Hip-Hop] Daye Jack – Piggybank (prod. Alexander Split)

Daye Jack
Piggybank

In the last year or so, Georgia-native Daye Jack has become a steady and consistent force in hip-hop. While his style draws from the recent revival of soul, funk & jazz in the genre, Jack sets himself apart with a multi-faceted delivery and a distinct depth of content. His latest single, “Piggybank,” finds all those skills on full display. With a jazzy electronic backing c/o Alexander Split, Jack prances between rap flows and singing while simultaneously tackling the topic of materialism from multiple angles. The result plays out like an internal battle with society’s ingrained ideas of accumulating wealth. Despite a “conscious” subject matter, Jack keeps his rhymes light, and satirical, perfectly accompanying the laid-back instrumental. The multitude of characters and voices portrayed make it hard to believe there’s just one vocalist on the song in some ways calling to mind the dexterity of Kendrick Lamar. Enjoy this one above and, if you dig it, make sure to peep his EP Soul Glitch.

[Hip-Hop] Daye Jack – Soul Glitch (EP Review)

On his aptly-titled debut mixtape Hello World, Atlanta emcee Daye Jack first showed us that he was special as an emcee. In the year and a half since that release, though, it’s become increasingly evident that rapping was just scratching the surface for the multi-faceted artist. From singing over incredibly jazzy backdrops to delivering quick-hitting raps on future electronic stylings, Jack’s shown us he can do it all and even, at times, seamless fusions of all of the above.

It’s not just the cadence and delivery that are impressive, though, Jack’s nearly always got a perspective and message. Whether it be social injustice, poisonous relationships or life ambitions, the young artist tackles topics with artistry, eloquence and a wisdom beyond his years.

Never have Daye Jack’s range of talents been more apparent than on the Soul Glitch, his latest EP. It’s a completely fluid, yet varied collection of song that solidifies Daye Jack as one of the most progressive artists in hip-hop. The opening track, “First Glitch,” with its future-jazz vibe, sets the tone for the entire project baking in a sprinkle of the project’s surplus of sounds. From there, the project takes a markedly jazzy feel with “Easy” and “Stars Align,” which seem to be inextricably tied through contrast–the former touching on the struggles of a 9 to 5 and the latter on the triumphs of carrying out your dreams. “Choices,” the next song, continues that theme of life decisions but also introduces the more dance-leaning sound that fully manifests on the Yoko Ono-sampling “Bonds” and “Trapped In Love.” The closer of the deluxe edition, “Save My Soul,” may pack the most powerful emotional punch from both its massive future electronic production and the incredibly powerful portrayal of inner turmoil. It’s the type of project that demands a full listen from start to finish and, with its variation in styles, can be made to fit just about any listening atmosphere or mood.

[Hip-Hop] Daye Jack – Trapped In Love

Daye Jack
Trapped In Love

At this point, it wouldn’t be fair to label Daye Jack simply a rapper. On his latest release, the multi-talented, Atlanta-bred artist shows once again that he’s an absolute creative force. “Trapped in Love” plays off the idea of the “trap,” normally used to refer to the inescapable cycle of drug-dealing for disadvantaged youth, applying the concept to a similarly constricting romance. The beat, crafted by Matthew Engst, combines 808-laden trap production with bouncy synths setting the tone for the simile. Meanwhile, Jack spits aggressive bars that reflect a trap delivery but, rather than speaking on hood experiences, recalls the feeling of getting caught up in love. Jack keeps the track dynamic and interesting through out alternating between a venomous, hard-hitting delivery and an airy crooning chorus. “Trapped in Love” truly pushes boundaries and will be featured on Jack’s forthcoming Soul Glitch, due out June 30th.

Still Barking

Since releasing his debut project, Hello World, at the start of 2014, Atlanta emcee Daye Jack has been steadily offering his fans new material, each release expanding on the last and demonstrating a different dimension of his sound. Although he’s already shown an aptitude for singing, Jack takes things to a new level with his latest. “Still Barking” carries a distinctively jazzy tone equipped with a xylophone, steady bass line and some subtle, distorted keys. Daye Jack matches the instrumental’s smoothness spending the first 1 minute crooning a ballad that, in short, details feelings of oppression sending a soulful, witty “fuck you” to authority before spitting a few equally clever bars. For those of you at work or school right now, this one’s a great listen for hump day–grab a free download above.

Easy

Let’s be honest, the 9 to 5 work schedule sucks regardless of what is on your computer screen for 8+ hours a day, 5 days a week. Luckily, we all have music to help us get through work, school or whatever our grind may be. Budding Atlanta emcee, Daye Jack, has crafted the perfect track to let us know that he feels our pain. “Easy” kicks off with a soft, soulful sample and the chorus features a repeating “Is it easy?” in reference to the daily struggle. Jack shows off a melodic flow, but his bars are also meaningful, relatable and perfect for the desk day-dreamer.

“Easy” is the first single from Jack’s upcoming project, titled Soul Glitch. If you’re feeling this one, though, make sure to also check out the 18 year-old’s impressive debut mixtape, Hello World.
