[Future Hip-Hop] Galimatias & Goldlink – One Step Back (Gravez Remix)

Galimatias & Joppe ft. GoldLink
One Step Back (Gravez Remix)

Future hip-hop is a relatively new genre, engineered with the intent to blend the best components of the music world. Meshing lyrical content and melodic flow of artists with the unparalleled smoothness and texture of future beats is the perfect way to satiate all of the auditory senses in one track.

A couple days ago, Atlanta artist and HW&W collective member Gravez released his version of last year’s popular Soulection track, “One Step Back.” In his latest creation, Gravez has taken the noisy original tune and sparingly injected it with synths, the softly inarticulate crooning of Denmark’s Galimatias, and segments of low-pitched dynamics common in the future genre.

The idiophones and hi-hats dotted through this track add to a uniquely smooth quality that is juxtaposed by the fast rhyming vocals of Goldlink. “One Step Back” is a symbol of how contrasting styles can be combined to create a special tune; it is the divergence of styles creating a peaceful banger.

Gravez is wrapping up a tour with shows in Boston and San Francisco in mid-July. Check out “One Step Back” above and download the track here.

Waldo and his AGO crew have been making waves on the hip-hop scene for the last year plus, and chances are they’re bound to blow up “Any Day Now” . Today, the Michigan native teams up with Tre Capital and Like (of Pac Div) to lay some fire over some incredible production from two other TMN favorites, Gravez and DrewsThatDude. The track was originally teased by Tre on Twitter last month, but it doesn’t seem to be slated to appear on any upcoming projects. Regardless, make sure to be on the lookout for both Waldo’s Summer Child EP and Tre Capital’s Gundam II, set to drop later this year.

Where We From

Gravez can do no wrong. We’ve known that to be true for a little while now, but we just wanted to make sure we made that statement official. His latest single, “Where We From,” is only further testimony to that fact. Inspired by fellow production whiz Sango (who also designed the above artwork), Gravez’s latest single demonstrates his versatility behind the boards. Flipping a sample of Enur‘s 2007 hit “Calabria,” this new tune has an irresistible bounce to it that is sure to get your head bopping, but the adept piano works helps mellow the track out, making this a perfect listen for just about any occasion.

Ay Ay (Gravez VIP) (ft. Drewsthatdude & Scolla)

Atlanta-based producer Gravez has positioned himself nicely for 2015 closing out last year with an onslaught of strong releases, both originals and remixes. His take on Drake‘s “6 God” was featured by multiple editors in our recent best of 2014 list, but it’s only one of many future hip-hop productions that has gained him a rapidly growing following on SoundCloud. For his last remix of 2014, Gravez unleashed a complete re-imagination of “Ay Ay,” the standout track from Ninja-favorite emcee GoldLink. With some production assistance from Drewsthatdude and vocal work by Scolla, the VIP keeps Link’s vocals in tact while transforming the booty-bouncing original into a soulful number with a distinct southern, future bounce.

With artists like Rome Fortune, Young Thug and iLoveMakonnen pushing the envelope as emcees in Atlanta, Gravez seems to be carving his own lane among the wave of producers creating unconventional backdrops helping ATLiens stay ahead of the curve sonically. We’re looking forward to what Gravez has in store for us this year between his original work, remixes and collaborations. In the meantime, enjoy this unique cut above, grab a free download and head to Gravez’s Soundcloud page for more gems.
