[Fresh Electro/Pop] Poppin' with Penguin Prison

Neon Gold records the same people that brought you Passion Pit, Marina & the Diamonds, Ellie Goulding and The Sound of Arrows have just recently signed the awfully named project by Crhis Glover called Penguin Prison. But dont let the name fool you because his electropop tunes are bound to consume you.

Neon Gold revieled one of Penguin songs “Animal Animal” back in September and are now giving us another sneak peek at his 80’s style pop driven single “A Funny Thing” before it drops on November 23rd.

Cold War Kids are back on the map and plan to be releasing a four song EP this January entitled Behave Yourself, including the song Audience of One.

Cold War Kids are an American indie rock band from Whittier, California. Here are a couple of our favorite singles from them that date back to 2006 from their EP’s We Used to Vacation and Up in Rags and later released in their album Robbers & Cowards

[Acoustic] I Am In Love With Anya Marina…’s Voice

It is a fantastic feeling. The feeling of utter amazement, almost like what a kid feels as he visits a theme park for the first time. A music rush for this music junkie. Thanks to my stationary job I can afford to listen to music almost every day and every once in a while there is a song/artist that just hits closer to home than other.

Browsing around Sheena Beaston’s blog I came across the beautiful singer/songwriter Anya Marina from San Diego, California. A calm smoky voice softly covering the warm melodies of her acoustic guitar. It feels like Jazz, sounds a bit folky and it is full of enough alternative/pop elements to make your hands and feet move along to its charming rhythm.

On January of 2009 she released her latest album called Slow & Steady Seduction, Phase II. And just recently her cover of Whatever You Like by T.I. aired on the soundtrack of Gossip Girls. Covers are always great to hear but this song hits it out of the park. I really hope we see more of Anya Marina in 2010.

Ok. California, I have to give it to you. Over the past years you have produced many “shore music” artists along the west coast including big names like Sublime and Jack Johnson. And while I am happy for you and your artists, Florida has a big surprise for you!

Meet the guys of B-Liminal, emerging from the very heart of South Florida. With their energetic live performances and perfected formula of combining elements of Reggae, Surf, and a little bit of rock, they have rapidly taken over Florida with their warm possitive melodies. B-liminal is composed of lead singer Bryce Rutkowski (former front man of Boxelder) Micheal Lyons, Max Fraser and Mike Berchtold. After I had the chance to see them live a couple of weeks ago I was particularly blown away by the range and power lead singer Bryce was delivering on stage.

B-Liminal‘s new album ‘Shore Culture’, was released in August of 2009 and its a solid attempt of capturing the shore life in a musical form with strong rock reggae grooves. If Reggae is your genre of choice, B-liminal is definitely for you. Go check out the bands myspace for more songs.

I have previously mentioned how I have grown a thick skin to all the way too many remixes of MGMT’s Kids. Yet this cover simply blew me away. The Kooks, a British indie pop band, have rejuvinated my liking to Kids with their amazing cover. The Kooks have been known to do many covers of popular songs like Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy and Coldplay’s Violet Hill.
