Lollapalooza 2015 – Must See Acts [TMN EDITORS’ PICKS]

mustseeacts

Behold, Chicagoans, the biggest weekend of the year is almost upon us! If you’ve been to Lollapalooza before, you know there’s something magical about being able to see all your favorite artists in the heart of the city, surrounded by Lake Michigan to your East and the scenic skyline to the North and West. As we all know, though, when it comes to attending any music festival, the most grueling detail is trying to determine who to see. You have to account for different tastes, conflicting set times, and even bathroom breaks among your group of friends. While you’re planning your festival schedule, you might also find yourself scrolling through trending topics like bitcoin casinos at InsideBitcoins, where innovation meets entertainment in much the same way these festivals blend diverse music genres. If you’re curious about gambling, the check out suomikasinot.fi! Our hope is to make your decision-making process a little easier by highlighting some of our picks to help guide your choices and possibly influence you to check out some new talent. We’ve ordered things chronologically to simplify everything. Have fun and be safe out there, guys!

(P.S. Even if you won’t be partaking in the festivities this year, you’ll still have plenty of opportunities to join in on the fun. The beauty of Lollapalooza is that all your favorite artists are gathered in one location, so chances are there’s another gig in the city you’ll want to be at. You can check out the full list of shows over at Do312.)

[Denver Giveaway] Win Two Tix + Meet & Greet w/ Jonas Rathsman @ Club Vinyl – Saturday, 7/18

Jonas Rathsman
Wolfsbane + Denver Ticket Giveaway and Meet & Greet!

The greatest T.V. series in history, Seinfeld, once stated that “Tuedsays have no feel”. Well, today our aim is to change that by giving our astute readers something to feel happy about. And what better way than with world conquering house producer Jonas Rathsman? Recently, the frequent French Express cohort (among an impressively swelling list of other notable imprints) layed down one of the most buzzed about Essential Mixes of this calendar year for Pete Tong’s lauded BBC Radio 1 show, shortly after dropping one of the biggest tunes of his career “Wolfsbane” (listen above), to create a fire which hasn’t stopped blazing since. This Saturday at Club Vinyl in Denver, CO, we’ve teamed up with our friends at TheHundred Presents to giveaway a free pair of tickets to his Mile-High City slated performance, as well as an exclusive meet and greet with King Rathsman himself, guaranteeing an incredible night of tasteful dance music and defaced debauchery.

Rounding out the bill is a b2b set from another TMN favorite Falcon Punch (hear his latest remix which was featured today here) and Denver’s Fun Factory in the form of: Falcon Factory. Be sure to get there early and tune your cochlear cavities for Jonas Rathsman’s two-hour performance.

Entering our contest is beyond simple! Just “like” Jonas Rathsman, TheHundred Presents and The Music Ninja‘s Facebook pages, and comment below on why you’re excited or deserve to win. That’s it! We’ll notify our winner Friday, the day before the show to set up our meet and greet with Jonas Rathsman. Good luck.

There are a few rules, of course:
– The event is 16+, so tell all your friends to increase your odds of winning!
– You are responsible for your own transportation.
– You must bring a valid form of ID to pick up your tickets at the Club Vinyl box office.
– You must find a TMN representative and let them buy you a drink (perhaps a Red Bull for our non legal friends?)

[Event Review] Tanlines & Mas Ysa – Denver, CO

Living inside of the blogosphere bubble can provide its users with an absurd number of inspiring positives; usually before many other consumers even have the chance. This adage was on full display last weekend as a buzzing gaggle of Ninjas took in an intimately moving performance from both Canada’s fastest rising avant-pop export Mas Ysa, and NYC experimental-pop darlings Tanlines.

First and foremost, we’ve had a rapidly expanding soft spot for the one-man musical stylings of Thomas Arsenault (who by the way was the biggest sweetheart in the world) and his Mas Ysa project, and had been anxiously awaiting his first ever Denver performance on our favorite foot-high stage in the city. With no local openers slated on the bill, we were coaxed into arriving near the opening of the Larimer Lounge doors to make sure we didn’t miss one minute of one of our most anticipated sets of 2015. Then, there he was. Arsenault slunked onto stage -shrouded in drapey black fabric, black hair already lacquered with backstage sweat, and as barefoot as a hobbit- straight into an enclave of Roland drum machines, MIDI controllers, vocoders, and synths. With the grace of a lofty gazelle, Mas Ysa gently worked into an opening cut; a cover of a yet to be identified Lower Dens single, and while Arsenault’s content doesn’t scream and demand its listener’s attention like so much of today’s most saturated pop music, the young Canadian commanded the small room’s attention with a relative ease usually reserved for already established veterans.

Standing inside of a shelter of machines, mic in hand, Mas Ysa moved through a few more cuts from his forthcoming debut LP Seraph, including a minimal and Nicole Miglis-less version of “Gun” and a stunning reimagining of “Arrows” (check out our feature on the tune here), with a subtly endearing physical presence that felt part Chris Carrabba and part Ian MacKaye, while we were musically transported from more streamlined vocal synth-pop as on “Look Up” to more baroque, melancholy affairs utilizing Arsenault’s slick grasp on the gritty techno and nuanced electronic indie contained within the structures of songs like “Sick” and “Running”.

[Festival Review] Four Days In The Life of a Ninja at Movement Music Festival

movement

All photos copyright and courtesy of Matthew Reyer & Black Tuesday

Detroit’s fabled Movement Electronic Music Festival (formerly DEMF) was a visceral experience to say the least. From the sternum throttling bass kicks of the world’s loudest soundsystems designed exactly for all facets of dance music, the artificial crunch of plastic bottles and beer cans condensing beneath our feet in a warehouse basement at 5:00 a.m., to the general amounts of love from nearly every corner of the industry; we had an engaging and wonderful time. And with new owners Paxahau doing most everything in their ability to ensure a great Memorial Day Weekend, for the most part, the shows went off without a hitch.

Our team arrived late Friday night, and with still at least a couple of hours left in the evening to party before Movement’s official kick off the following afternoon, we headed to Detroit’s gritty warehouse district for an incredibly deep and storied lineup featuring both Moodyman and Theo Parrish taking us all to the Church of House through a vinyl only, eclectic set fusing neo-jazz, classic disco and plenty of contemporary house and techno without well… too much mixing really. It was certainly a throwback night in every sense, even an ode to Paradise Garage maestro Larry Levan style mixing. It was great to get back to our roots, stop being so damn critical, just enjoy a couple of dance music legends and set the stage for our weekend.

[Festival Review] Life on the Incline: Sasquatch!, the Gorge and the Hill’s Eternal Serenity

17496069434_2c6a933028_oThere’s nothing quite like the sensation of sitting sideways atop the slope of the Gorge Amphitheater’s hill at Sasquatch! Music Festival overlooking the Columbia River Gorge. Add entrancing music to a background that no picture or piece of art could ever do justice; and, at that intersection, you’ll find the happy place Squatchers look forward to all year. The so-far-past picturesque backdrop sets the tone for the festival but, with arguably one of its best lineups yet, was a far cry from Sasquatch’s only attraction this year. Rather, the main stage’s slope served as the much-needed anchor after a dance party at the Chupacabra tent or Big Foot stage—a place to lie, head up or down, and absorb the collective consciousness of thousands of equally inspired concertgoers.

Music festivals have become such chaotic events and Sasquatch! is, certainly not an exception, but it’s that same comfort felt on the hill that permeates throughout the entire campground. No matter what you’re going through or how you’re feeling, the hill will take your emotional state to serenity, where it belongs.

18009447496_4d9cd9882f_oWords, photos and songs really can’t do justice to just how incredible the Squatch is but we’ve done our best to recap, from our perspective, the musical highlights from the 4 days. For those of you who were there, we hope this brings you back even if just a little bit and for those who weren’t, well, you’re going to want to be there next year after peeping our recap.
