Classified's "Self Explanatory" is also self satisfying

You are in for a hip/hop ride like never before when you listen to the latest album of one of Canada’s finest and yet most underrated producer/rapper Classified. Right away you can tell his a producer first and rapper second, as the quality and refinement of each beat on every track is to put it simply… freaking dope! He brings an out of the box lyrical approach of storytelling where through a series of tracks prefixed with “Choose Your Own Adventure” he raps the events that happened to him in a normal day, each scenario accompanied by a different beat and style. To describe his style you would have to listen to artists like Jay-Z and Mike Shinoda’s side project Fort Minor.

Each track is submerged in genuine life themes that come through as sincere as he expresses them. Classified is not a higher than life artist, spitting game and bragging about girls, money and fame like most mainstream rappers do. He is about being at par with life and its situations from a grounded and hopeful positive perspective. I’ve been blogging about music and selecting my favorite from albums for a while now and it truly pains me to select just a couple of songs to share from this epic album. We’ll definitely start with the first song I heard from Classified titled “Quit While You’re Ahead” and just to show his range in style I am also posting the slow, mellow, sad and yet motivational song “Inspiration” . “Choose Your Own Adventure 3” is one of out a 6 part series of track that complete a storytelling adventure.

Then we skip to the band that just cannot be ignored this year. Passions Pit “Little Secret” is just as refreshing as diving into a cold pool during these summer days. Their new album Manners released may of 2009 is sure to pop up again at the end of this year when I do best albums of 2009.

Summer is not all about being outdoors as the Black Eyed Peas “I Got A Feeling” has become a DJ’s best friend at almost every nightclub I have been too. The Barletta Remix takes it a couple of notches further to become one of the ultimate dance songs this summer.

Sweet and soothing, Zee Avi’s loving and innocent voice can wrap you up with her mellow song “Bitter Heart” and take you to better places. Her new self titled album Zee Avi was released May 19 of this year. Her popularity rose from posting a video on youtube that eventually caught on like wild fire which eventually led Brushfire Records (partly owned by Jack Johnson) to signed her.

Courtenay Green is an LA artist who has been performing regularly in Southern California for the past year. Her first EP, Mixed Message, was released in late 2008 and she will be releasing her new song, DEVIL IN THE DETAILS, on July 16th. DEVIL is a slight departure from the songs on her first EP, and demonstrate some of the new musical ground she will be covering on her next studio production (to be released this fall).

I AM ANXIOUSLY AWAITING Muse’s upcoming fifth studio album “The Resistance” which will be released September 14, 2009. Electronic Vibes from Canada: DEEBS

Upcoming producer/DJ “Deebs” has completely won me over with his off the wall remix of Walking with a Ghost. It has only been about a year since he started producing electro music and he has already become a party favorite in his home town Guelph, Ontario. He also recently released another remix “Pick Up The Slack” from the Golden Gloves that is much more synthetic and with a higher level of trippiness. I am also posting a fun song Deebs remixed with the begining lyrics “Is this the real life, Is this just fantasy” of Bohemian Rhapsody from Queen. I always love when people bring back the classics.
