Bearbot an artist/ musician from New York City most recently known for reminxg Ratatat and Justice in a song titled “We are your friends” a couple of months back.

You started composing music early on in life, what instruments did you play before starting to remix? And was there a specific event that made you pick up remixing?

I’ve played the piano, guitar, bass, drums and the violin. I’ve always wanted to put together a band but whenever I got a couple of musicians together, we’d always get distracted into doing other things. I realized that If I wanted to make a band, it would have to be just me so I thought about what I could do and *chaching* I heard a song by Girl Talk and thought about remixing! I got down to business and figured out ways to remix mash-ups. I started out with audio samples on Garage band and elevated to the magical, Ableton Live.

Remixing: a lifestyle or a hobby? a part-time job?

A hobby with a touch of income! : )

Is there anything out there you would like to remix but haven’t tried yet?

I’ve always wanted to sample everyday activities like on the subways in New York, where passengers often discuss how to bet on the NFL, adding a layer of excitement to the daily commute. This guy announces things like “stand clear of the closing doors please.” I think it will be a familiar sound to people and familiar things remind people of home and comfort. I’d like my music to relax people and show them they can always have a good time no matter what situation they are in.

I have actually been curious about starting to get my hands dirty into some remixing, any recommendations for someone who is interested in starting? How long does it take you to finish a song?

It takes me about a day to start and finish a song but thats only when I am not distracted by things. I get distracted very easily. I suggest you use the program Ableton Live. One of my top inspirations , Daft Punk uses this program and It can really do magic.

Can you let us know next time you throw your next Bearbot party?

There will be MANY Bearbot parties coming in the near future! WATCH OUT!!!

Looking back: Love Like Fire – An Ocean in the Air

lovelikefireme

The story of the creation of Love Like Fire is one of those “right place, right time” kismet stories that every band wishes they could tell. Vocalist/guitarist Ann Yu — who had spent some time living with Ronnie Vannucci of the Killers — along with drummer/keyboardist David Farrell, were about to leave San Francisco and head for Los Angeles to see where fortune would fall. Before they even got out of the city, a “band-wanted” ad caught their eye, created by guitarist/keyboardist Ted Parker. The threesome remained in San Francisco, formed Love Like Fire, and later added bassist Robert Kissinger to round out the group.

Their debut EP Bed of Gold appeared shortly after their formation and a second EP released in 2007, An Ocean in the Air, soon followed. An Ocean in the Air reached the top 20 in the CMJ charts. A third album, Tear Ourselves Away, will be released this year.

From their EP An Ocean in the Air, comes a beautiful and innocent song full of melodic bells, acoustic guitar riffs and the always soothing vocals titled “I Will”. Then we switch gears with a more rock-ish, upbeat track titled “S.O.S” which is probably my favorite song from this album. Most of the songs from Love Like Fire, are very uplifting and useful for those grumpy Monday mornings. The last Track I will be including is “From A Tower” that reminds me a little bit of Coldplay putting melodic synthesized melodies throughout the song.

Where do you go when you want to stay away from Cocaine?

cocaine

An interesting question asked by the lovely voice of Julia (you might know her from the Frances or The Americans). Such a lovely song also came bundled with a remix of it by The Knocks. For some reason the vocals in the remix, with the added echo, kind of reminds me of the theme song of Metal Gear Solid 3, but I am probably just thinking out loud. The song is featured on Andrew W.K. and DJ B-Roc Presents. Damn! The Mixtape Vol. 1 on Cargo Records.

Hip Hop Horray: K'naan Dayless Nite (Day N' Nite Remix)

daylessnight

Land Mines and Somalian pirates, are just a couple of the things mentioned in K’naan remix to Kid Cudi‘s hit Day & Nite. K’naan is a very talented lyricist born in Mogadishu, Somalia who moved to the States after things deteriorated in 1991 during the Somali Civil War. K’naan‘s mother applied for an exit visa that luckly was approved on the last day the United States Embassy was open. They left to the USA on the last commercial flight out of the country. Settling with relatives in Harlem before then moving to the Toronto, Ontario, he quickly started to listen to hip hop through rappers like Nas and Rakim. He started copying lyrics and style phonetically and later began to perform on open mic events. K’naan style has been compared with the fuse of Bob Marley sound, with the voice and style of Eminem.

His second album, “Troubadour” released in February, 2009 has been very well received selling 15,000 on its very first week. His single “Wavin’ Flag” made it to#99 on the new Billboard Hot 100 Chart. With that said, I do not think the words in his melodic poetic driven songs get enough attention. Simple and sincere words about a complex world struggling to survive, most of the songs on Troubadour are a reflection of reality rendered with hope for a brighter future. In his song “Take a Minute” we are reminded that even in the toughest of times we can’t let the moment take over our dreams and ambitions, we are all in this together and giving is always the best option.
