How to make a trippy beat? add TURBO P

turbop

At this point in the music industry/promotion, where almost everything is started through the internet, it is important for artists that want to make a name for themselves to be as accessible possible. A great example of this happened yesterday. I was on thesixtyone looking at what other people have been listening to and I came across the magnificent beats of Turbo P. Failing at looking through his myspace for a link to where to download his music, I signed on AIM and typed in his AIM (trillassbutts) listed on his sixtyone.com profile and sure enough he was online and ready to start a conversation.

Turns out his a talented young producer from Roanoke, Virginia that just recently turned 22 years old this week – Happy Birthday! Haha I am glad he took the time to chat and send us some of his songs to share. First I want to start out with the song titled “PBT”. I usually like to be more descriptive but this song is just so freaking radical! He manages to stretch, squeeze transform and at one point, almost completely obliterate an electronic beat to its very limits. All the frequency stretching, synthetic rhythms, mesmerizing melodies, electronic thumbs and the voice over loop spelling P-B-T make it a very psychedelic electronic piece. Another song I have included in this post is titled “Kittens” that I found equally as epic. Give it a minute

Not a big fan of all the frequency stretching mayhem? Not a problem. Turbo P has started on a project called “Cinemax” that tunes the electronic down a bit while increasing in harmony and throwing some pop into the mix. With soothing vocals and much cleaner melodies, Cinemax also looks very promising. My favorite song from his Cinemax project is titled “Smudge”, a lovely pop tune with an electronic foundation.

As of right now, Turbo P does not have anything ready for release just yet but if you want to buy/download his songs you can get them through his profile on thesixtyone.com or check out his myspace myspace to stream his latest work.

Looking back: its great to be Huma

huma

I just discovered today ( a little late since they released their EP “We Are Here For You” in 2006, and “Some Things Come and Go” in sept 2008) and I am enjoying their unique and organic sounding folk electronic sound. Music for Humans by Huma, their style is still very acoustic and subtle even though they describe themselves as electronic. An easy listen that will get you though the day this Wednesday evening.

“A brother. A sister. A best friend/girlfriend. Kids behind counters making music on coffee breaks. Teachers after school playing NYC late. Librarians singing softly in the stacks. We started in New Jersey with a self-released EP bringing together pastoral pop with an electronic twitch. So many sounds combined in every scene lived. It became shows played and friends made. It became an album released on Cult-Hero records in 2006 called “We Are Here For You.” It became a tour, more shows and continues to spread. It became a new home on the west coast. Here we are today. Nothing stays the same. It’s about writing new songs for new releases and playing for new faces. We will be happy to answer any questions.”

"The joke is on everyone", says Patrick Davy

cover

Yes, the joke is on everyone that has not listen to the extremely catchy song title “The Joke” (click here to check out the video). Patrick Davy is a singer/songwriter/guitarist from Detroit, Michigan. In his album debut “Where it began“, Patrick creates a balance between the simplicity of his songs and the powerful heartfelt vocals to create beautifully sounding melodies. As he points out “‘Where it Began‘ is a darker record than most as the songs are reflections of reality. Because life isn’t like TV. The record is directed at the heart and bones without the sales-pitch frills that the obsolete gatekeepers of the music industry have required for too many years.

“The joke” and “Took a long time” are one of the lighter songs that appear on his album. Others like “The feeling” and “Where it began” are much more mellow with a steady slow tempo. Make sure you check out his myspace to listen more of his album.

Michael Rossback: Acoustic Rock at its Best

micheal

I recently discovered Michael Rossback music on thesixtyone and I do not know why I haven’t heard him before, his acoustic rock songs along with an impressive voice, similar to Chris Martin’s, just made me buy all 4 of his independent albums… with no regrets. Micheal Rossback spends most of his time in the studio producing other artist but that has not stopped him from recording his own music. Although most of his songs are comprised of acoustic instrumentals, his songs have a heavy rock influence. In addition, some of his songs have an experimental foundation that combined with his heavy but soothing rock voice, makes you compare him to popular bands like Radiohead and Coldplay. Micheal has taken me by surprised and I hope he does the same to you. I have included one of the most experimental sounding songs from him titled “In Dreams” from his album “In Dreams” released March of last year. “Carry My Weight” is a poetic, slow rock song from his album “Angels in Between the Lines
” released independently February of 2008. It is emotionally powerful enough to appear in a soundtrack of a TV show on some type of romantic farewell scene. On the same album, there is a much mellow, acoustic guitar, soft song titled “Best Dreams” that’s lyrics are as gentle as they sound sincere. I probably like this song a lot due to its lyrics that go “Give love away, live your tomorrow, today” a phrase that  everyone should try to live by.
