[Event Review] Interpol – Denver, CO – Ogden Theatre – 9/27

Interpol
Ancient Ways

Every so often a band comes along and takes hold of both your ears and heart; their entire catalog consuming your soul while simultaneously strengthening its hypothetical grip on its listener over time. Such is the case for this writer with one of New York’s most treasured musical exports of the last decade: Interpol. Needless to say, when the now five-piece post-punk indie revivalists, who are on the heels of their fifth full length album El Pint0r (and second without longtime bassist Carlos Dengler), checked the city of Denver as a stop on their latest tour; The Music Ninja would surely have sent at least one willing representative. And what a delicate, mystical and inspirative performance they delivered on a most beautiful Saturday night at one of our city’s most intimate and sonically tuned venues, The Ogden Theatre.

The crepuscular ensemble  strutted out one by one to the Ogden’s stage amidst a dark, smokey shroud until finally lead vocalist Paul Banks assumed his position in front of the mic stand and say “hello” much to a raucous Denver crowd’s collective ecstasy. Interpol’s chosen live visual aesthetic was akin to a film noir; with gloomy lighting and minimal visuals playing off of their unique, highly recognizable sound  -while their crowds diversity (which on this night was completely sold out) never ceases to amaze. From older fans strictly of the group’s first two LP’s Turn On the Bright Lights and Antics, to younger, chic listeners of the so-called hipster persuasion and everything in between; the mass was undeniably in attendance for one reason. A rather stripped down but just as lively version of El Pintor single “My Blue Supreme” was the chosen opening vehicle for an eager audience to board before swinging it up once again for a reminiscent delivery of perhaps this writer’s single favorite Interpol tune, “Evil”. As the night wore on, Paul, Daniel, Sam, Brandon and Brad undoubtedly fell into an incendiary groove. The troupe found themselves sleekly cycling between intimate crowd favorites like “Narc”, and “NYC” as well as El Pintor fare including “Same Town, New Story”, “Everything Is Wrong”, an astounding live rendition of “My Desire” and an upstart encore performance of “All the Rage Back Home”.

While we’ve heard the division of Interpol aficionados arguing over their lack of recording polish since the departure of said Carlos D; their live show certainly carries with it the same intriguing edge on which their legions of fans built such strong opinions in the first place. All in all, it was a great performance from a band still retrotting the steps on its identity and their live show hasn’t struggled nearly to the level some critics would suggest. Don’t miss Interpol on the rest of their tour with remaining North American tour dates below, and stream the El Pintor single “Ancient Ways” above.

[Concert Review] Little People-The Larimer Lounge, Denver

little people
For Rosie DJ mix

I’ve been a fan of Little People for quite some time now: readers may remember my review of the artist’s latest album We Are But Hunks of Wood (http://themusicninja.wpengine.com/little-people-we-are-but-hunks-of-wood/).

I was pretty excited to have the opportunity to do a live performance write up of the artist, but to be fair to the reader, I’m not a huge fan of the proverbial on-stage DJ. It’s not really my scene as I tend to prefer the more head banging, guitar slamming variety of on-stage performance. I typically save my electronica for home.

It was with this sensibility in mind that I donned my Neurosis band tee shirt before heading to the show: an invitation for Little People to impress a diehard metal fan. In the few DJ shows I’ve seen, I’ve never spontaneously started dancing. I’m adverse to even the thought of it.

I spontaneously started dancing at this performance. I just couldn’t help it.

Little People took the stage in an unassuming tee shirt and jeans and promptly got to work. And it was work. This guy is one of the hardest working DJs out there, I’m convinced. He immediately dropped some up-tempo beats, faster than his albums it seemed, and began weaving some of his signature piano licks from Basique, Moon and Start Shootin’ into the faster tunes. I was impressed at the following he had there and the hoots of pleasure as each piano lick trickled over the speakers.

His new album made some appearances as well, Marzipan Children, Aldgate Patterns, and Eminence Grise were present along with others, sometimes tweaked and often juxtaposed between other songs. At one point, Little People was flipping back and forth between four songs, matching beats perfectly, never losing any of the impact of the songs. How could you not dance to that!? It was a great show and a great time.

On a side note, I had the great privilege of sitting in on the interview between the Little People (Laurent Clerk) and The Music Ninja. Not only did I like the Clerc’s reverence for the Wu-Tang Clan and A Tribe Called Quest, I enjoyed the artist’s down to earth, shy and somewhat overwhelmed responses to his own popularity. The indie music industry is full of prima donnas, appropriately! It’s nice to see someone who is aware of his talent but isn’t personally defined by it. Check out Little People. Very worth it!

[Show Review] Dillon Francis – Boulder, CO

Nicky Romero Ft. Nervo
Like Home (Dillon Francis Remix)

For a guy who started off making music in his parents guest house, Dillon Francis has come a long ass way in the past year exploding onto the music scene with his catchy, body dancing sound.

Taking the stage in Boulder on Thursday, Dillon’s bright white hair and his pearly white smile beamed as he gazed around the many fans crowded into the Boulder Theater. And then, the beats began. Dillon has such a stage presence about him, he’s always rocking along with his music, smiling and singing along with the lyrics in his remixes. He was right to take the huge risk on music and it is paying off one hundred times over. The crowd was constantly moving, girls were screaming at the top of their lungs and many fans were finding themselves lost in the lights and the captivating rhythms. Dillon dropped his new remix of Justin Timberlake’s “Suit and Tie” which added even more catch to the already catchy song. Dillon has the ability to take any song and put his own charm into it. Thanks for the smiles Dillon, keep rocking that sunshine hair, just makes you that much brighter.
