Treasure Island 2016: 12 Must See Acts — SF 10/15-16 [Festival Preview]

culrt-fumaam8ayIf you’ve been following The Music Ninja over the last few years, you already know that Treasure Island Music Festival reigns atop our list of best music events in the Bay Area. Rounding out peak festival season, TIMF consistently avoids the repetitive lineups that plague competitors while offering an ideal environment for attendees worn out from over-crowded events. 2016 is an important year for the festival marking both its 10th anniversary and final year taking place on Treasure Island itself as a result of upcoming real estate development. Thankfully it will not be the end altogether for the SF staple, which will be relocating to a TBD destination come 2017 (the SF Chronicle even has a poll where you can vote on where it should be).

With those milestones in mind, Noise Pop have stepped up their already fantastic curation bringing what may be our favorite lineup to date. Our best advice would be to catch as many artists as the schedule permits, be prepared for the rain and stop by the Silent Disco. Although we know and love pretty much every artist on this weekend’s bill, we’ve curated our top picks for each day below. Hope to see some of you Ninjas on the island! Continue reading

[NEW] Duke Dumont – The Giver (Reprise) (Wave Racer Remix)

Duke Dumont
The Giver (Reprise) (Wave Racer Remix)

In the near year since Wave Racer last released music, it’s only become increasingly evident the impact his playful, bouncy style has had on electronic music. The pioneering Australian producer returns today picking up right where he left off with his official remix of Duke Dumont‘s smooth “The Giver (Reprise).” Matching the chilled-out vibe of the original, the remix steadily builds eventually giving way to an epic combination of his signature sounds. Although it maintains Wave Racer’s general aesthetic, this one’s certainly more of a slow burn than anything we’ve heard from him. Wave Racer’s hitting the road soon and, from what we’ve heard, it’s not a show you want to miss. Give his latest a spin above and check out his upcoming dates below. Continue reading

[House] Duke Dumont feat. Jax Jones – I Got U (Jonas Rathsman Remix)

Track Premiere: Duke Dumont feat. Jax Jones
I Got U (Jonas Rathsman Remix)

Let’s face it. Duke Dumont’s uber-addictive single “I Got U” was bound to father a slew of remixes from the moment it began receiving its due diligence in live sets from the world’s most influential dance artists. So when we heard about an entire EP being put out behind the clubby house tune, we crossed our fingers hoping that a suitable slate of talented producers would be there to move “I Got U” under their vision. We were more than pleased with the way remix duties were handed out, especially when we discovered Swedish artist Jonas Rathsman was amongst those commissioned. We last featured Rathsman on a stunning original track “I Feel What I Feel” late last year, which was put out on tastemaking dance imprint French Express and in the time since, the Swedish producer has remained relatively quiet except for a few remixes. Suffice it to say, when we got a chance to glue our ears to his trademark brand of dreamy house and disko painted over the Duke’s dance-floor hit, we couldn’t help but be thrilled. Jonas executes his version masterfully, using much of the original stems as its core but infuses a healthy bit of atmospheric tinge throughout. If you’re feeling this one like we were, be sure to look out for the entire EP, featuring remixes by TMN favorites MK, Tensnake, Bondax, and High Contrast. Get shaking a little early today and stream Rathsman’s remix above.

[Deep-House] Tiga vs. Audion – Let’s Go Dancing (Need & Necessity Remix)

Let's Go Dancing (Need & Necessity Remix)

Finding lesser known talent whom exhibit immense musical skill is part of what keeps the engine driving here at TMN, which is a sliver of the reason we have taken such a shine to house duo Need & Necessity. In keeping with the steady slate of dance tracks we’ve been bringing you ninjas this week, we’re delivering the rising production unit’s take on one of this writer’s favorite house jams of 2013, Tiga vs. Audion’s “Let’s Go Dancing”. Need & Necessity have completely reworked the drums off of the emotive original, simultaneously jacking up the hi’s exactly to our liking while shifting towards a much deeper end of the house spectrum in the process. It’s clear to see that with recent live performances supporting powerhouse acts like Cyril Hahn, Ryan Hemsworth and Duke Dumont that all of that up close experience with some of the world’s best producers is translating quite nicely into some polished production. Stream the tune above, and as a thanks to their fans hitting a recent milestone on Facebook, you can download Need & Necessity’s remix of “Let’s Go Dancing” here.

[House] Tensnake – Love Sublime (Duke Dumont Remix)

Love Sublime (Duke Dumont Remix)

As German disco and house producer Tensnake readies a debut LP, Glow, set for a March 3 release, he’s teased legions of fans by dropping a few singles including “Love Sublime”; the latest jewel off of the impending album. U.K. house superstar Duke Dumont, who is coming off of one of the strongest 2013’s of any artist, has taken Tensnake’s brand of  downtempo Nu-Disco and turned “Love Sublime” into a dance floor smasher. Whereas the original radiates a sunny disposition, Dumont pumps the right amount of murkiness onto the tune while simultaneously gearing it straight towards a peak hour crowd. Stabbing piano chords overlay a punchy drum kick groove while the vocal plays out much more expansive and intimidating than on Tensnake’s original, creating a feeling only the Duke could mold a previous track into. This one is definitely worth a listen this Thursday for our dance fans, check it out above.
